Angenehme Taube

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Angenehme Taube” (B. Schmolck, 1712), from the author’s Der lustige Sabbath, first series, for Whitsunday Vespers.

Mel.: Jesu, meine Freude.

DOVE so long desirèd
By the seers inspirèd!
From Thy heav’nly height
Come as rain distilling,
Jesus’ members filling;
On God’s city_alight.
Take Thy rest,
O welcome Guest,
In our hearts that seek to hold Thee,
Let us now enfold Thee.

2 On each soul descending
Let Thy peace unending
Evermore abound.
As Thou once wast soaring
O’er the waters roaring,
With us now be found.
Show us here
The leaf so dear
Of the olive—blessed token
That the floods are broken.

3 In Thy mouth Thou bearest
Of all signs the fairest,
Peace’s cov’nant thrives!
Those by sin defilèd,
Christ hath reconcilèd,
Saved are all those lives
In the church and ark remaining,
O’er the billows straining.

4 What Thy plucking brought us
Long the prophets taught us:
And this precious leaf
By that Tree was nourished
Which in Eden flourished,
Ere the Fall of grief.
It doth still
That unction spill,
Which the Savior, pouring, offered
When for us He suffered.

5 Life’s essential savor!
Not in vain Thy favor
Hath revived our hearts!
Leaf with balm relieving
Every cross aggrieving,
Oil that health imparts,
Life distilled,
With quick’ning filled,
Wherewith any wound attended
Wholly is amended.

6 Pierce, O heav’nly Herald,
All the raging world,
Bid its storms be still,
And its tumults tether,
Hold us all together
With one heart and will.
Rouse our lips
With that which drips
From Thy mouth’s anointed preaching,
All Thy language teaching.

7 Hold this precious token
Of Thy peace unbroken,
Let this leaf divine
As a tree be springing
And on earth be bringing
Blessed fruit of Thine.
Though we die
And heav’nward fly,
Let us there such leaves be finding,
And new wreaths be winding.

8 Dove, as we adore Thee,
We in faith implore Thee:
Deign with us to stay:
If Thou dwellest solely
With the pure and holy,
Make us pure, we pray!
Dovelike ways
To heaven raise:
Some day on Thy wings us carry
To the heights all starry!

Angenehme Taube,
Die der Vaͤter Glaube
Laͤngſt geſehen hat,
Laße dich hernieder,
Hier ſind CHriſtus Glieder,
Hier iſt GOttes Stadt.
Halte Raſt,
Erwuͤnſchter Gaſt,
Jn den Hertzen, die verlangen
Dich itzt zu empfangen.

2 Setze dich auff jeden,
Und laß deinen Frieden
Uber allen ſeyn.
Wie du dich erhebeſt,
Auff dem Waſſer ſchwebeſt,
So kehr bey uns ein.
Zeig uns hier
Das Oel- Blat fuͤr,
Als ein hoͤchſterwuͤnſchtes Zeichen,
Daß die Fluthen weichen.

3 Was du traͤgſt im Munde,
Zeigt vom Friedens-Bunde,
Der auffs neue gruͤnt.
Die in Noa Kaſten,
Als im Kercker raſten,
Sind mit GOtt verſuͤhnt.
Kirch und Arche ſchwimmen oben,
Bey der Wellen Toben.

4 Was du abgebrochen,
Jſt uns laͤngſt verſprochen,
Und dis edle Blat
Jſt vom Lebens-Baume,
Der in Edens Raume
Laͤngſt gegruͤnet hat.
Traͤufft es doch
Vom Oele noch,
Welches JEſus laſſen fluͤſſen,
Als er leiden muͤſſen.

5 O Geruch des Lebens,
Der uns nicht vergebens
Unſer Hertz erqvickt,
Dieſes Oelblat kuͤhlet,
Daß man Lindrung fuͤhlet,
Wenn daß Creutze druͤckt,
Es giebt Krafft und Lebens-Safft,
Wenn es wohl wird auffgebunden,
Heilt es alle Wunden.

6 Bothe von dem Himmel,
Dringe durchs Getuͤmmel
Dieſer eitlen Welt,
Und mach eine Stille,
Daß ein Hertz, ein Wille,
Uns zuſammen haͤlt.
Laß das Blat,
Das dein Mund hat,
Unſer aller Lippen ruͤhren,
Deine Sprache fuͤhren.

7 Dieſes Friedens-Zeichen
Laß nicht von uns weichen,
Ja, laß dieſes Blat
Gar zum Baume werden,
Der ſchon hier auff Erden
Deine Fruͤchte hat.
Sterben wir,
Und gehn zu dir,
Laß uns ſolche Blaͤtter finden,
Kronen draus zu winden.

8 Nun, du liebe Taube,
Unſer aller Glaube
Nimmt dich zu uns ein,
Wohneſt du bey keinen,
Als nur bey den Reinen,
Ach ſo mach uns rein.
Tauben-Arth
Bringt Himmelfarth.
Trag uns einſt auf deinen Fluͤgeln
Zu den Sternen-Huͤgeln.

Ach! geuß die Flamme deiner Liebe

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Ach! geuß die Flamme deiner Liebe” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, first series, for Tuesday in Whitsun Week. The indicated melody, “Wer nur…,” does not perfectly fit the meter (989899), as happens a few times throughout the book. It appears that appropriate tunes were ignored in favor of the more familiar one. I include here three, one notably for a hymn by Franck.

Mel.: Ach, Herr, warum wirst du so ferne;
Or: Welt, tobe, wie du willst, und wüte;
Or: Mein Jesu, hier sind deine Brüder.

OH, fill my heart, dear Comfort-giver,
With flames of Thy supernal love!
And that it may not grieve Thee ever,
Direct it up to heav’n above,
And drawing it from earthly passion,
Therein Thy joyful temple fashion.

2 I hail Thy grace beyond all merit:
In me, a wretch, Thy home Thou hast!
Oh, then, adorn my mind and spirit
With Thine own beauty, that shall last,
That there with all Thy grace excelling,
Thou mayest take delight in dwelling!

3 The world with all its splendors thronging
And all its mirth repelleth me.
I will for nothing more be longing
If I can comfort find in Thee,
Till sight of Thee I shall be given
With Son and Father there in heaven.

GERMAN
Ach! geuß die Flamme deiner Liebe,
du werthe Tröster, in mein Herz.
Und daß dichs nimmermehr betrübe,
so führe solches Himmelwärts,
und reiß es von der Lust der Erde,
daß es dein Freudentempel werde.

2 Wie hoch erfreut mich deine Güte!
denn in mir Armen ist dein Haus.
Demnach so schmücke mein Gemüthe
mit deiner Schönheit selber aus,
daß du, wenn du es selbst begabest,
darinnen Lust zu wohnen habest.

3 Die Welt und aller Welt ihr Prangen
stinkt mich mit ihrer Wollust an.
Ich werde weiter nichts verlangen,
wenn ich mich deiner trösten kann;
bis ich dich in des Himmels Aue
samt Vater und dem Sohne schaue.

Also hat Gott geliebt die Welt

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Also hat Gott geliebt die Welt” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia, for Monday of Whitsun-week, with the final supplicatory stanza from later editions. Gesius 1605 omits this hymn in favor of another hymn on the same text fitted to the tune “Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ.” I suggest the

Mel.: Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ.

FOR God so loved the world that He
His Son our Ransom gave to be,
That none should perish evermore
Who in Him trust and Him adore.

2 But He salvation them will give,
In grace and mercy make them live;
God sent His Son by virgin birth
And made Him known to men on earth:

3 That He might not as judge condemn,
But from their sins deliver them;
Who doth in Him believe is free,
Who doth not so, condemned is he.

4 Who in God’s sole begotten Son
Believeth not, is judged alone.
The Light came to our earthly shore,
But mortals loved the darkness more.

5 For evil were their deeds; for light
Is hateful to the sinner’s sight.
Himself from light he keeps removed,
Lest e’er his deeds should be reproved.

6 But he that faithful is and true
Comes to the light in open view,
And lets his work be manifest,
No fear of judgment in his breast.

*7 The new birth be on us conferred
By Spirit and by saving Word,
Lord Christ! For sinful flesh and blood
Are carnal, and can do no good.

GERMAN

Also hat Gott geliebt die Welt,
daß er sein Sohn gab zum Lösgeld,
auf daß niemand verloren werd,
der an ihn glaubet hie auf Erd.

2 Sondern will in die Seligkeit
schenken, aus Gnad und Gütigkeit.
Denn Gott hat sein Sohn nicht gesandt,
und den Menschen drum macht bekannt:

3 Daß er sie durch ihn richten wollt,
sondern sie selig machen sollt.
Wer an ihn glaubt, wird nicht gericht,
der ist verdammt, wer glaubet nicht.

4 Wer an Gotts eingebornen Sohn

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Erschienen ist der Freudentag” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst for Whitsunday,

Mel.: Erschienen ist der herrlich Tag.

NOW doth the Day of Joy appear,
For which no man enough can cheer;
God sent His Spirit on this day,
To show to us the heav’nly way.
Alleluia!

2 What was today seen long ago
Is for our comfort here below,
To us God still His Spirit sends,
And as our Comforter commends.
Alleluia!

3 He by whom every tongue was learned
And to Himself the heathen turned,
Still teacheth now His Christians dear
At every hour, both far and near.
Alleluia!

4 As then the stranger stood amazed,
God’s pow’r is still in churches praised,
Throughout the world her line is gone,
The Word our heav’nly life bestows.
Alleluia!

GERMAN

Erschienen ist der Freudentag,
dran sich kein Mensch gnug freuen mag,
heut sendet uns Gott seinen Geist,
der uns den Weg zum Himmel weist.
Hallelujah.

2 Was heut vor langer Zeit gesehn,
das ist auch uns zum Trost geschehn,
Gott schenkt uns euch noch seinen Geist,
der unser höchster Tröster heißt.
Hallelujah.

3 Der alle Sprachen selbst gelehrt,
die Heiden hat zu sich bekehrt,
der lehrt auch noch zu jederzeit
die ganze werthe Christenheit.’
Hallelujah.

4 Wie dort der Fremdling sich entsetzt,
so wird noch jetzt die Kirch ergetzt,
die Predigt geht durch alle Welt,
was Wort bringt uns ins Himmels Zelt.
Hallelujah.

Wie soll ich mein Gott dir danken?

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wie soll ich mein Gott dir danken?” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst for the feast of Pentecost, based on the Gospel for Whitsunday. His other hymns for the occasion there are “Freuet euch, ihr Gotteskinder / freuet euch ihr Christen all” and “Laß mich, o treuer Gott,” which are found translated on this blog.

Mel.: Ach, was soll ich Sünder machen.

O MY God, how shall I thank Thee,
Who Thy love and mercy true
Ever daily dost renew?
Oh, what joy for seasons lengthy
Spirit, mind, and heart possess
In Thy love and graciousness!

2 ’Twas Thy love my Comfort gave me,
And my Mercy-seat alone—
Jesus, Thy beloved Son;
’Tis Thy love that still to save me,
Gives me faith and constancy,
That I live eternally.

GERMAN

Wie soll ich mein Gott dir danken?
Deine große Lieb und Treu
ist mir ewig immer neu,
dein Herz, mein Geist und Gedanken
freuen sich zu aller Zeit
deiner Lieb und Gütigkeit.

2 Deine Lieb hat mir gegeben
deinen allerliebsten Sohn,
meinen Trost und Gnadenthron;
deine Lieb schenkt mir das Leben,
daß ich glaub beständiglich,
daß ich lebe ewiglich.

Ihr Christen Herzn, erhebet euch

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Ihr Christen Herzn, erhebet euch” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder for Whitsunday, from the Epistle reading, Acts 2. I give the longer form of the melody as well as a simplification from Schein.

Mel.: Spiritus sancti gratia.

YE Christian hearts, with joy arise,
Your songs send to the starry skies,
Rejoice and shout for joy to God,
And ever give Him thanks and laud.

2 Who hath His throne in heav’n above,
And sends the Holy Ghost in love;
In the Apostles now discerned
Through them to God the people turned.

3 In one place they were gatherèd,
And called on God, as Christ had said;
A rushing as of wind thereat
Filled all the house wherein they sat.

4 Their tongues were cloven and they gleamed,
Like as of flames of fire they seemed,
The fullness of the Holy Ghost
On each one sat among their host.

5 And at that hour were wonders heard,
With novel lips they spoke the Word,
In their own tongues many a land
Men heard the apostolic band.

6 In every tongue the teaching prized
They taught, of faith alone in Christ,
Which all the world doth join again,
And bringeth peace to hearts of men.

7 For He who many tongues can speak
Empow’rs the Word in vessels weak,
In hearers’ hearts doth open doors,
And in them gifts of heaven pours.

8 O Holy Ghost, come here to Thine
With bounteous love and grace divine,
Teach that all virtue is but sin
Unless true faith be found therein.

9 Since in the way of Christ alone
Is righteousness and justice known,
The prince of this vile world restrain,
Reprove the judge that helps his reign.

10 Help us abide with constancy
In heav’nly truth, made known by Thee.
Which Jesus Christ to mortals taught,
And from the Father’s bosom brought.

11 Grant that we Jesus Christ may know,
Blot out all things that ’gainst Him go,
Turn us from every sinful bond
And let us not of earth be fond.

12 The heavy-laden heart relieve,
Lift up the weary souls that grieve,
The more our weakness here we show,
The more Thy strength on us bestow.

13 When we in blessing here have died,
Deign with our children to abide,
That in all lands the true God may
Be known and given praise for aye.

14 So grant the Father and the Son
And Holy Spirit, Three in One,
For this may we all ready be
To thank God in eternity.

GERMAN

Ihr Christen Herzn, erhebet euch,
und singt, daß es die Stern erreich,
frohlockt und jauchzet mit dem Mund,
und danket Gott zu aller Stund.

2 Der seinen Stuhl im Himmel hat,
und sendt den heilgen Geist herab,
an den Aposteln ists bewehrt,
und die von ihnen sind bekehrt,.

3 Sie waren gleich an einem Ort,
riefen zu Gott, nach Christi Wort,
bald kömmt ein Brausen wie ein Wind,
erfüllt das Haus, darinn sie sind.

4 Ihr Zungen die zertheilten sich,
schienen feurigen Flammen gleich,
auf allen saß insonderheit
des heilign Geistes Völligkeit.

5 Wunder man hört zur selben Stund,
sie reden all mit neuem Mund,
mancherlei Volk aus allem Land,
vernimmt die Sprach zo ihm bekannt.

6 Der Glaub allein an Jesum Christ,
ihr Lehr in allen Sprachen ist:
Derselb vereinigt alle Welt,
und die Herzen zufrieden stellt.

7 Denn der in so viel Zungen redt,
gibt Kraft zum Wort, daß es fortgeht,
den Zuhörern das Herz aufschleußt,
und seine Gaben in sie geußt.

8 O heilger Geist, komm her zu uns,
mit deiner milden Lieb und Gunst,
lehr, daß all Tugend Sünde sei,
wo nicht der Glaube ist darbei:

9 Weil, daß der Gang des Herren Christ,
Gerechtigkeit alleine ist:
Dem Fürsten steur der bösen Welt,
den Richter straf, ders mit ihm hält.

10 Hilf, daß wir bleiben mit Bestand
in der Wahrheit, durch dich bekannt,
welche der Herr Christ uns bedacht,
hat aus des Vaters Schoße bracht.

11 Gib, daß wir kennen Jesum Christ,
lesch alles aus, was widr ihn ist,
wend uns von Sünden ab und wehr,
daß uns die Welt gelieb nicht mehr.

12 Erledig die Beladenen,
gib Trost und Freud den Traurigen,
je größer unser Schwachheit ist,
je mehr dein Stärk an uns beweis.

13 Nach unserm seligen Abscheid,
bei den lieben Nachkommen bleib,
daß ja allzeit in allem Land,
der wahre Gott ihn sei bekannt.

14 Das geb der Vater und der Sohn,
mit dem heiligen Geiste schon,
des solln wir alle sein bereit,
zu danken Gott in Ewigkeit.

O Gottes Geist, mein Trost und Rath

Here is my translation of the hymn, “O Gottes Geist, mein Trost und Rath” (J. Rist, 1651), from the author’s Sabbathische Seelenlust, for Exaudi Sunday. For the meter, I have followed the usual form used in English hymns (“Come, Holy Ghost, God and Lord”), taking all linese as iambic and breaking the slur in the last line; except that in the first line I restore a syllable, so that there is no slur on the second and third notes, or else on the fourth and fifth notes (both forms are seen early on). Note: C. S. Terry has also translated stanzas 1, 5, and 12, which appear in the Bach cantata BWV 175. Here, I also include Schop’s proper melody, though designed for a slightly different meter, and omitting the Alleluias.

Mel.: Komm, heiliger Geist, Herre Gott.

GOD’S Spirit, Thou my Help and Cheer,
My faithful Rock and Couns’lor dear,
I doubt not that at my request,
Thou represent’st me for the best,
That I may not with terror meet
My God before His judgment seat.
My Mediator help me know,
Who must be Savior called by all below.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

2 All help Thou dost give in distress,
My tongue dost loosen to confess,
That with my God I may abide
When by my mighty foes defied.
Thou mak’st me bold in heart and mind,
That I may faith and courage find
To count blood, name, and wealth as loss,
Lord, for Thy sake, and patient bear my cross.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

3 Dear Spirit, Thou dost judge aright,
A sinful wretch before Thy sight,
Far worse than earthly curse, am I,
Condemned by Satan’s cruel cry:
Thou say’st: Whoever turns away
Form sin, and ceasing more to stray,
Himself to Christ doth wholly give
He shall not die, but shall forever live!
Alleluia, Alleluia!

4 Oh, how the wicked worldling thinks,
When ’neath the cross Thy Christian sinks!
“God hath forsaken him,” it cries—
“The Most High God must him despise!”
But here the opposite we claim:
The cross is pious Christians’ aim.
He that will be called God’s dear child
Must eat his bread with salty tears defiled.
Alleluia, alleluia!

5 Thou, Spirit of grace, leav’st me not,
When I by Satan sore am fought.
Thou as a champion standest nigh,
When evil men would see me die.
Thou strengthenest heart, mind, and soul,
When countless terrors round me roll,
Yea, when my heart would break, from Thee
I wisdom find to conquer fearlessly.
Alleluia, alleluia!

6 What care I for this wicked world?
Away be all its treasures hurled!
How can its tyrants do me harm?
Mere dust cannot my soul alarm.
The noble Couns’ler teacheth me
To build on God unshakingly:
Who always will give me His aid
Though mountains fall and all the mighty fade.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

7 Thou Spirit of truth sett’st aglow
A brilliant light by which I know,
That faith need not be care-assailed,
By that which to the world is veiled.
And were my understanding slight,
I yet have learned to know aright
The Maker’s works and wonders well,
Which flesh and blood can measure not nor tell.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

8 A lying spirit is the foe,
Whom Christ doth as a murd’rer know.
The heav’nly Spirit us can lead
So that the light and truth we heed.
He guides us to the Word of God,
And this alone is the abode
In which true faith and love must shine,
Which are the Christian’s wreath and trophy fine.
Alleluia, Alleluia!

9 I follow, precious Spirit, Thee;
Help me to seek eternally
That life, according to Thy Word,
That is by Thee in grace conferred.
Thy Word, it is the morning-star,
That shines with glory near and far.
Thus when men teach me otherwise,
I ever will, my God, ignore their lies.

10 Defend me, lest I follow e’er
The world, that lays its secret snare,
Nor all their oily counsels heed,
With falseness or with wicked deed.
Though God is very gracious, He
To earthly sinners soon can be
A mighty foe and vengeance bear
Upon their heads before they are aware.

11 O Spirit of truth, help Thou me,
That I may no mere hearer be
Of Holy Writ, but strive, o’er all,
To live according to Thy call.
Oh, curb my feeble flesh and blood,
That doth so much oppose Thee, God!
How else shall I, poor wretch, abide,
If all the world to ruin must subside?
Alleluia, alleluia!

12 Lord, comfort me in all distress,
Yea, strengthen me when death shall press
My soul from this vile world to go;
Then sweeten Thou my pain and woe!
Be Thou my teacher, couns’lor, shield,
Of sinful lusts let me be healed,
Help me o’ercome distress and death
And ever live with Thee, as now by faith.

C.S. TERRY
1 O Holy Spirit, Counsel sweet,
My only Hope and Advocate,
Ne'er doubt I that Thou hear'st my crying,
That Thou my soul wilt, when dying,
Courage to meet her Lord supply,
That without fear Thy face I see.
O teach me ay the Christ to know
Whom all the world as Saviour doth own.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

5 O Holy Spirit, Thee we pray
Grant us Thy help that so we may
A purer, better life be living,
And win at last grace and blessing.
God's word shines like the morning star
Whose beams illumine near and far.
No matter what the world murmur,
We'll find in heaven love's fullest fervour.
Alleluia! Alleluia!

12 Lord, counsel give me in my need,
Strengthen my soul when I am dead
And from my body she hence wingeth,
And cause her fearless heavenward speed.
O be my Counsellor and Friend,
And from me far misfortune send.
Help me o'er death and ill conquer
And one day live with Thee for ever.
Alleluia! Alleluja!

GERMAN

O Gottes Geist, mein Trost und Rat,
Mein treuer Hort und Advokat,
Ich zweifle nicht, dass auf mein Beten
Du werdest mich also vertreten,
Dass ich vor Gottes Angesicht
Und Richterstuhl erschrecke nicht.
Ach lehre mich den Mittler kennen,
Den alle Welt muß Heiland nennen.

2. Du stehest mir in Nöten bei,
Du lösest mich die Zunge frei,
Dass ich bei meinem Gott kann bleiben,
Wenn mich die stärksten Feinde treiben.
Du machst mir freudig Herz und Mut,
So dass ich Ehre, Gut und Blut
Kann tapfer für den Glauben wagen,
Dazu mein Kreuz geduldig tragen.

3. O werter Geist, du richtest recht,
Im Fall ich armer Sünden Knecht
Viel ärger als ein Fluch der Erden
Vom Satan soll verdammet werden.
Du sprichst: Wer sich bekehret hat
Von seiner Sünd' und Missetat
Und Christus gänzlich sich ergeben,
Der soll nicht sterben, sondern leben.

4. Wie richtet doch die schnöde Welt,
Wenn uns das Kreuz verriegelt hält!
Da heißt es: Gott hat ihn verlassen,
Der Allerhöchster muss ihn hassen.
Hier findet man dass Widerspiel:
Das Kreuz ist frommer Christen Ziel.
Wer Gottes liebes Kind will heißen,
Der muss sein Brot mit Tränen beißen.

5. O guter Geist, du läßt mich nicht,
Wen mich der Satan hart anficht.
Du stehest als ein Held in Nöthen,
Wenn mich die böse Welt will töten.
Du stärkest mir Muth, Seel und Sinn,
Wenn ich in tausend Ängsten bin.
Ja, wenn mir will mein Herz zerspalten,
So lehrest du mich freudig walten.

6. Was acht ich doch die schnöde Welt
Mit aller Wollust, Ehr und Geld?
Was können mir Tyrannen schaden?
Sie sind ja nichts als Kot und Maden.
Der edle Tröster lehret mich,
Auf Gott zu bauen festiglich:
Der will mir stets sein Hilfe reichen,
Wenn gleich die Berge sollten weichen.

7. Du Geist der Wahrheit zündest an
Ein Licht, dass ich erkennen kann
Das, was der schnöden Welt verborgen,
Darf nicht des Glaubens halber Sorgen.
Und wär ich endlich noch so schlecht,
So lern ich doch verstehen recht
Des Herren Werk' und Wundertaten,
Die Fleisch und Blut nicht kann erraten.

8. Der Satan ist ein Lügengeist,
Den Christus einen Mörder heißt:
Der Geist vom Himmel kann uns führen
Sodass wir Licht und Wahrheit spüren.
Er leitet uns zu Gottes Wort,
Und dieses ist allein der Ort,
In welchem Glaub' und Liebe glänzen,
Die beid' uns Christen schön bekränzen.

9. Nun, werter Geist, ich folge dir:
Hilf, dass ich suche für und für
Nach deinem Wort ein ander Leben,
Das du mir willst aus Gnaden geben.
Dein Wort ist ja der Morgenstern,
Der herrlich leuchtet nah' und fern.
Drum will ich, die mich anders lehren,
In Ewigkeit, mein Gott, nicht hören.

10. Behüte mich, dass ich der Welt,
Die mir so heimlich Stricke stellt,
Nicht folg auf ihr geschmiertes Raten
Mit Heucheln oder bösen Taten.
Denn ob schon Gott sehr gnädig ist,
So kann er doch in kurzer Frist
Den Sündenknechten dieser Erden
Ein starker Feind und Rächer werden.

11 O Geist der Wahrheit, steh mir bei,
Daß ich nicht bloß ein Hörer sei
Des Worts. Laß mich für allen Dingen
Nach einem neuen Leben ringen.
Ach steure meinem Fleisch und Blut,
Dass dir so viel zu wider tut.
Wie werd ich Armer sonst bestehen,
Wenn nun die Welt soll untergehen?

12 Herr, tröste mich in aller Noth,
Ja, stärke mich, wenn nun der Tod
Die Seele will vom Leibe scheiden:
Als denn versüße mir mein Leiden.
Sei du mein Lehrer, Schutz und Rat,
Dämpf alle meine Missetat,
Hilf Noth und Tod mir überstreben,
Und laß mich ewig bei dir leben.

Schmückt das Fest mit Maien

Here is my translation of the Pentecost hymn, “Schmückt das Fest mit Maien” (B. Schmolck, 1715), a Whitsunday hymn referencing the traditional decoration of churches with the new summer greens and (wild)flowers (Maien) in wreaths and garlands, in accordance with Luther’s translation of Psalm 118. It should be distinguished from the author’s less familiar, earlier Whit Tuesday hymn “Schmückt das Fest mit grünen Maien” (Der lustige Sabbath, 1712), which begins with the same allusion but otherwise treats the Tuesday gospel. Miss Winkworth’s translation from 1855, included below, omits stanza 4 and takes the iambic meter 668.668.888.

Mel.: Jesu, meine Freude

DECK the festal morning {or Deck with festal flowers}
All with flow’rs adorning; {Hallowed halls and bowers;}
Fitting off’rings pay!
For the gracious Spirit
Comes; all ye that hear it,
Clear for Him the way!
Welcome Him, / whose heav’nly gleam
Hearts with light and healing filleth
And all sorrow stilleth.

2 Couns’lor of the grieving,
Seal of saints believing,
Spirit wise and strong!
God’s almighty Finger,
Heaven’s Concord-bringer,
Righting every wrong!
Grant Thy pow’r / in us to flow’r,
Give us of Thy boundless favor
Thy good gifts to savor.

3 Let each tongue be flaming
When the Savior naming;
Lift our minds on high;
Help us, prayer’s Author,
To implore the Father,
Speak with heav’nly sigh;
Oh, impart / a bolder heart,
And the strength the church is craving
While the foe is raving!

4 Brilliant Light, be showing,
Fountain clear, be flowing,
Fill our mind and sense!
Gracious Oil, enliven;
Magnet-like to heaven
Draw us up from hence!
Build Thee here / Thy temple dear,
Fire Thy hearth with kindling blessed
Where God is confessèd.

5 Rain of heaven precious,
Pour Thy blessings gracious
O’er the church’s ground;
Spread Thy streams bedewing,
All the land renewing
Where Thy Word is found.
Let it swell / and prosper well,
Fruit a hundredfold deriving,
And forever thriving.

6 Send Thy flame to stoke us,
Fire of Love, and yoke us
In true brotherhood:
Let Thy breath caressing
Also bring us blessing,
Curbing flesh and blood;
Set us free / that we may flee
From sin’s yoke, and hell and devil,
And from every evil.

7 Grant us to be willing
And therewith fulfulling
All that pleaseth God;
In our soul residing,
In our heart abiding,
Make us Thine abode.
Pledge most dear! / Let us know here
Jesus rightly as our Brother,
And call God our Father.

8 All our crosses sweeten,
Let the dark be beaten
Back by Thee, our Light!
Wings of faith prepare us,
Unto Zion bear us,
Through our mortal flight.
When life ends, / and death impends,
Then in joyful faith sustain us,
And the vict’ry gain us!

9 Now mid ills besetting,
Keep us from forgetting
We are in God’s hand;
Let us serve Him ever,
Flow’ring in good favor,
As a fruitful land,
Till we there, / O Refuge fair,
Mid the summer flow’rs of heaven
Endless joys are given!

WINKWORTH

Come, deck our feast today
With flowers and wreaths of May,
And bring an offering pure and sweet;
The Spirit of all grace
Makes earth His dwelling-place,
Prepare your hearts your Lord to meet;
Receive Him, and He shall outpour
Such light, all hearts with joy run o'er,
And sound of tears is heard no more.

2 Thou harbinger of peace,
Who makest sorrows cease,
Wisdom in word and deed is Thine;
Strong hand of God, Thy seal
The loved of Jesus feel;
Pure light, o'er all our pathway shine!
Give vigorous life and healthy powers,
O let Thy sevenfold gifts be ours,
Refresh us with Thy gracious showers!

3 O touch our tongues with flame,
When speaking Jesu's name!
And lead us up the heavenward road.
Give us the power to pray,
Teach us what words to say,
Whene'er we come before our God.
O Highest Good, our spirits cheer,
When raging foes are strong and near,
Give us brave hearts undimmed by fear.

5 O golden rain from heaven!
Thy precious dews be given
To bless the churches' barren field!
And let Thy waters flow,
Where'er the sowers sow,
The seed of truth, that it may yield
A hundred-fold its living fruit,
O'er all the land may take deep root,
And mighty branches heavenward shoot.

6 Thou fiery glow of Love!
Let us Thy ardours prove,
Consume our hearts with quenchless fire!
Come, O Thou trackless Wind!
Breathe gently o'er our mind!
Nor let the flesh to rule aspire;
Help us our free-born right to take,
The heavy yoke of sin to break,
And all her tempting paths forsake.

7 Be it Thine to stir our will;
Our good intents fulfil;
Be with us when we go and come;
Deep in our spirits dwell,
And make their inmost cell
Thy temple pure, Thy holy home!
Teach us to know our Lord, that we
May call His Father ours through Thee,
Thou Pledge of glories yet to be!

8 Oh make our crosses sweet,
And let Thy sunshine greet
Our longing eyes in clouded hours!
Wing Thou our upward flight
Toward yonder mountain bright,
Girded about with Zion's golden towers!
Forsake us not when our last foe
Puts forth his strength to lay us low,
Then joyful victory bestow!

9 Let us, while here we dwell,
This one thought ponder well,
That in God's likeness we are made.
As o'er a fruitful land
Rich harvests waving stand,
We, serving Him, bear fruits that never fade,
Till Thou in whom all comfort lies,
Lift us to fields above the skies,
And bid us bloom in Paradise!

GERMAN
Schmückt das Fest mit Maien,
lasset Blumen streuen,
zündet Opfer an;
denn der Geist der Gnaden
hat sich eingeladen,
machet ihm die Bahn.
Nehmt ihn ein, / so wird sein Schein
euch mit Licht und Heil erfüllen,
und den Kummer stillen.

2 Tröster der Betrübten,
Siegel der Geliebten,
Geist voll Rath und That,
starker Gottesfinger,
Friedensüberbringer,
unser Advokat,
gib uns Kraft / und Lebenssaft,
laß uns deine theure Gaben
nach Vergnügen laben.

3 Laß die Zungen brennen,
wenn wir Jesum nennen,
führ den Geist empor.
Gib uns Kraft zu beten,
und vor Gott zu treten,
sprich uns selbsten vor.
Gib uns Muth, / du höchstes Gut,
tröst uns kräftiglich von oben
bei der Feinde Toben.

4 Helles Licht, erleuchte,
klarer Brunn, befeuchte
unser Herz und Sinn.
Gnadenöl, erquicke,
dein Magnet entz¨¨cke
bis zum Himmel hin,
baue dir / den Tempel hier,
daß dein Herd und Feuer brennet,
wo man Gott bekennet.

5 Güldner Himmelsregen,
schütte deinen Segen
auf das Kirchenfeld.
Lasse Ströme fliessen,
die das Land begiessen,
wo dein Wort hinfällt,
und verleih, / daß es gedeih,
hundertfältig Früchte bringe,
un ihm stets gelinge.

6 Schlage deine Flammen
über uns zusammen,
wahre Liebesgluth,
laß dein sanftes Wehen
auch bei uns geschehen,
dämpfe Fleisch und Blut.
Laß uns doch / das Sündenjoch
nicht mehr wie vor diesem ziehen
und das Böse fliehen.

7 Gib zu allen Dingen
Wollen und Vollbringen,
führ uns ein und aus.
Wohn in unser Seele,
und des Herzens Höhle
sei dein eigen Haus.
Werthes Pfand, / mach uns bekannt,
wie wir Jesum recht erkennen,
und Gott Vater nennen.

8 Mach das Kreuze süße,
und im Finsternisse,
sei du unser Licht,
trag nach Zions Hügeln
uns mit Glaubensflügeln,
und verlaß uns nicht,
wenn der Tod / die letzte Noth,
mit uns will zu Felde liegen,
daß wir fröhlich siegen.

9 Laß uns hier indessen
nimmermehr vergessen,
daß wir Gott verwandt.
Dem laß uns stets dienen
und im guten grünen
als ein fruchtbar Land,
bis wir dort, / du werther Hort,
bei der grünen Himmelsmaien
ewig uns erfreuen.

Wahrlich, wahrlich, spricht der Mund

Here is my translation of the Pentecost hymn, “Wahrlich, warhlich, spricht der Mund” (L. Laurentii, 1700), appointed for Tuesday of Whitsun Week (Gospel of John 10:1–10) in the author’s Evangelia Melodica.

Mel.: Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier.

TRULY, truly saith that Mouth
That can never once deceive us,
Making known to all the truth,
Lest the lies of men aggrieve us;
Ever may these words be noted
By the Door of sheep devoted!

2 Jesus is the Door alone,
Whereby shepherds all must enter
To the flock as Christian known;
He who thoughts on self would center
To the office slyly stealing,
Nothing brings but wicked dealing.

3 Oh, how many wolves invade
By good favor, bribes, and giving,
And in sheeplike fleece arrayed,
Comes the sheep of wool bereaving.
And, not being from the Savior,
Bring the office shame, disfavor.

4 Not just teachers who proclaim,
But all Christians falsely callèd,
Undeserving of the name,
To the lusts of sin enthrallèd—
Are not sheep in truth, since ever
They live counter to the Savior.

5 In the church they well may be,
But they have not gained admission
By the Door of God’s decree,
As a true and chosen Christian.
He who without faith appeareth
By no means in Christ inhereth.

6 As a teacher is a thief
And a murd’rer, who possessing
Not the Spirit, to men’s grief,
Steals the office and the blessing—
So false Christians thieves resemble
Who within the fold dissemble.

7 This the world believeth not,
So it recognizeth never
Shepherds whom God’s hand hath wrought,
But itself would gladly sever
From the godly and believing,
And God’s servants true and pleasing.

8 Well discern the sheep of faith
At their faithful shepherds’ crying,
Rousing without hate or wrath
Those in sinful slumber lying,
Waking them in love each morning,
For their good bestowing warning.

9 Jesus, bring me to Thy fold
And Thy congregation holy,
Deign not entry to withhold!
Thou the Door and Gate art solely;
Open then, grant me the favor
To be Thy true sheep forever.

10 All Thy teachers, who by Thee
As the Door, have entered duly.
Keep, O Jesus, mightily,
By the Spirit teaching truly,
And let them, their end obtaining,
Many souls for Thee be gaining!

GERMAN

Wahrlich, wahrhlich, spricht der Mund,
der uns gar nicht kann betriegen,
sondern macht die Wahrheit kund
wider aller Menschen Lügen,
darum merke seine Worte
von des Schafstalls Thür und Pforte.

2 Jesus ist die Thür allein,
da ein Hirte muß durchgehen,
zu der Christlichen Gemein,
wer sich selber will erhöhen,
und zum Amte will eindringen,
will nur stehlen und nichts bringen.

3 Ach wie mancher schleicht hinein,
durch Geschnke Gunst und Gaben,
und im Schafpelz nur zum Schein,
daß er will die Wolle haben,
und weil Jesus ihn nicht sendet,
wird durch ihm das Amt geschändet.

4 Ja nicht nur wer andre lehrt,
sondern alle Namenchristen,
die des Namens doch nicht werth,
können nicht bei Sündenlüsten
sich für rechte Schaf ausgeben,
weil sie wider Jesum leben.

5 Sind sie gleich in der Gemein,
so sind sie doch nicht gekommen,
durch die rechte Thür hinein,
wie die auserwählte Frommen,
wer im Glauben nicht erscheinet,
ist mit Christo nicht vereinet.

6 Wie ein Lehrer ist ein Dieb,
ja ein Mörder, der einschleichet,
sonder Gottes Geist und Trieb,
und das Amt dennoch erreichet,
so sind Dieb auch falsche Christen,
die sich in den Schafstall nisten.

7 Dieses glaubet nicht die Welt,
darum will sie nicht erkennen
Hirten, die Gott selbst bestellt,
sondern suchet sich zu trennen
von den Frommen und Gerechten
und den theuren Gottes Knechten.

8 Aber guter HIrten Stimm
kennen bald die frommen Schafe,
weil sie sonder Haß und Grimm
sie aus ihrem Sünden Schlafe,
in der Liebe täglich wecken,
und sie nur zum Besten schrecken.

9 Ach HErr JEsu, zeige mir
zu dem Schafstall der Gemeine
selbst den Weg, daß mir die Thür,
der du selbst bist, und sonst keine,
werd eröffnet, daß ohn Gleißen
ich dein Schäflein möge heißen.

10 Deine Lehrer, die durch dich
als die Thür sind eingegangen,
schütz, o Jesu, kräftiglich,
daß sie ihren Zweck erlangen,
und durch Geistes Kraft in Lehren
viele Seelen dir bekehren.

Schmückt das Fest mit grünen Maien

Here is my translation of the Pentecost hymn “Schmückt das Fest mit grünen Maien” (B. Schmolck, 1712) from the author’s Der lustige Sabbath, part 1. The first line is from Psalm 118, for which reason I offer an alternate rendering. The final line in the German itself has a choice of words, which I attempt to imitate here.

Mel.: Gott des Himmels und der Erden.

BRING the festal greens that cheer us! {or, Bind the festal cords…}
Deck the church and heart and home!
For a Guest with joy draws near us;
Call aloud and bid Him come:
Come and enter, Ever-Blest!
Thou shalt be our welcome Guest!

2 Dearest Jesus, Thy desiring
Only is to love inclined;
Thou wilt lodging there be hiring
Where there is a heart and mind
Which that duty freely praise,
E’er proceeding in Thy ways:

3 “Where My sayings are receivèd,
Where love burneth fervently
We will come (be it believèd!)
There shall Our true dwelling be.”
Word of joy beyond compare—
What significance is there!

4 Born of dust and earth, how lowly
Is a man—a trifle, he,
Yet is made a temple holy
Of the Holy Trinity:
He whom all cannot contain
Is the Host and Guest of men.

5 Very Love compels Thee ever,
As a magnet moving Thee.
When a man Thy gracious favor
Meets with heart’s sincerity—
Him Thou with Thy Father blest
And Thy Spirit visitest.

6 Ah, my heart enkindle brightly
In the purest fire of love!
Grant it like a lamp to light me
Heart and mind, to heav’n above,
Let the flame inflamed thereby
Ever rise to Thee on high.

7 Let me ever be obedient
To Thy heav’nly words of grace,
For but through this gate expedient
Find’st thou in my heart a place.
None becomes Thy tent of rest
Who keeps not Thy treasure blest.

8 Of myself I have no power
To obey Thy Word divine,
’Tis Thy Spirit must each hour
This my heart to heav’n incline.
Let Him teach me by His reins
All that to true faith pertains.

9 When Thou to my soul art coming,
Deign Thy peace with Thee to bring,
For the world with strife is foaming,
Filled with ceaseless quarreling.
Let Thine olive branch Thy peace
Soothe my heart when fears increase.

10 There’s no terror can o’erpow’r me
When this world’s dread prince shall come,
He can never once devour me,
Though he fiercely prowl and roam.
Had he nothing, Lord, in Thee,
He can nothing have in me.

11 Thou art gone, O Lord, before me
To Thy loving Father’s throne;
Thus with longing I adore Thee
Till I hear Thy summ’ning tone,
When Thou biddest me: Arise,
Let us go hence—to the skies!

12 God thrice holy, all-excelling
Father, Son, and Spirit, Thou
Deign’st to take me for Thy dwelling,
Come today, yes, come right now.
Deck my soul most fittingly:
Keep Thy Whitsun {love’s own} feast in me!

Christus will euch nicht Waisen lan

Here is my translation of the Pentecost hymn, “Christus will euch nicht Waisen lan” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from his Schöne Geistliche Lieder, with a setting for two choirs, a “prior” choir precenting, and whole choir, the former performing the first two lines of each stanza melodically, the whole choir singing the refrain in four parts. All the German lines rhyme with -an or -ahn, which I here replace with “-ee”/“-y.” In the music given, the first note in a high D (Discant D).

Mel.: Christus will euch nicht Waisen lan.

CHRIST will not leave you orphans, see!
His Holy Ghost your Helper will be.
  We hear these tidings joyfully:
God makes us glad, so blessed be He!

2 He suffers no false vanity,
The truth from Scripture gives us to see.
  We hear these tidings, &c.

3 He to repent calls you and me,
True faith finds pardon with certainty!
  We hear these tidings, &c.

4 He worketh what else cannot be,
Gives true faith, love, and patience for free.
  We hear these tidings, &c.

5 The way through trials knoweth He,
The world and Satan from Him must flee.
  We hear these tidings, &c.

6 Now heaven open stands and free,
Where Christians shall dwell eternally.
  We hear these tidings, &c.

Weg, Welt-Getümmel

Here is my translation of the Pentecost hymn, “Weg, Welt-Getümmel” (B. Schmolck, 1712) from the author’s Der lustige Sabbath, part 1, for the third Day of Pentecost, i.e., Tuesday of Whitsun Week, on the Gospel of John 10:1–10, with title “The Door to the Church and to Heaven.”

Mel.: Preiset nun alle.

HENCE, earthly pleasure,
Tempting my soul to hell!
Heav’n is my treasure,
There shall all things be well.
What way to that blest land attaineth?
Jesus my Way, Truth, and Life remaineth! (x2)

2 What doth our Lord say?
Verily, verily!
He is the Doorway,
To blest eternity.
Shall I not trust Him who all gaineth?
Jesus my Way, Truth, and Life remaineth!
(x2)

3 Door of Life, heed me,
Entry do not withhold!
Bid Thy man lead me
Into the blessed fold,
Where of no wolf the soul complaineth;
Jesus, my Way, Truth, and Life remaineth!
(x2)

4 Through Thee, dear Savior,
Thou mak’st Thy sheep to move;
Let shepherds never
Murd’rers and robbers prove.
Fill them with love that never waneth.
Jesus, my Way, Truth, and Life remaineth!
(x2)

5 No voice of stranger
Will Thy true sheep obey,
But sensing danger
Wisely they flee away
From lies that kill and sin that staineth.
Jesus, my Way, Truth, and Life remaineth!
(x2)

6 From thieves that hurt us
Make Thou the fold secure;
Guards who alert us
Of grace and peace assure,
To lead the way that blessing gaineth.
Jesus, my Way, Truth, and Life remaineth!
(x2)

7 As they precede us
Let us obedient go;
Thy Word will lead us
And heaven’s portal show.
He errs who ‘gainst that Word here straineth.
Jesus, my Way, Truth, and Life remaineth!
(x2)

8 By names address us
Which are in heaven writ;
Thy Word shall bless us
Who here would follow it.
Good pasture give where nothing paineth.
Jesus, my Way, Truth, and Life remaineth!
(x2)

9 As Thou, dear Savior
The church’s Doorway art,
Finish whatever
Yet faileth in my heart.
By Thee the soul her Zion gaineth.
Jesus, my Way, Truth, and Life remaineth!
(x2)

Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt

Here is my translation of the Pentecost text, “Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt” (E. Neumeister, d. 1756), from the author’s libretto for Whit Monday, which begins his own chorale: “Also hat Gott die Welt geliebet, daß er sein eingebornes Kind” which I have already translated as “God loved the world so, that He gave it…” and which was set at least by Telemann. The present text, probably originally devised as an aria, has the meter 899.99.88 (ABBCCAA), each stanza beginning and ending with the same line or refrain. Robin D. Fish has kindly produced his own excellent melody to enable this text to be used as a hymn.

Mel. Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt

SUCH love did God for man conceive,
His only Son endured the Passion
To gain for all mankind salvation—
Salvation that, for their transgression
By which they were made death’s possession,
They by their pow’r could ne’er achieve:
Such love did God for man conceive.

2 Such love did God for man conceive,
His Son all souls’ corruption cureth,
And on us sinful men conferreth
New birth by water and the Spirit,
That every child may life inherit
If he this promise but believe:
Such love did God for man conceive.

3 Such love did God for man conceive!
And this love standeth firm forever;
As God’s own mount it shall not waver.
No error false can ever take it
The Spirit, given us to seal it,
Makes us more strongly to believe:
Such love did God for man conceive.

4 Such love did God for man conceive!
What from this love shall part us ever?
O all who trust in Christ the Savior
Shall to damnation ne’er be flying,
But live, though here they must be dying;
For God eternal life doth give.
Such love did God for man conceive!

Translation © 2025 Matthew Carver.

GERMAN
Also hat Gott die Welt geliebt!
Sein eingeborner Sohn muß sterben,
das Heil den Menschen zu erwerben;

Here is my translation of the Whitsunday hymn “Wer mich lieb hat, mein Wort der hält” (N. Herman, 1561), on the Gospel of John 14 from his Sonntags-Evangelia. Suggested melodies are 1. Erhalt uns Herr bei deinem Wort; 2. Wo Gott zum Haus nicht gibt sein Gunst. 3 Wohl dem, der in Gottes Furcht steht. 4. Christe der du bist Tag und Licht. Since I used the first suggested tune for Exaudi, I give the second here, noting nevertheless that Herman leaves the selection free. (Added 22 May, 2026: The tune “Spiritus sancti gratia”)

Mel.: Wo Gott zum Haus nicht gibt sein Gunst.

Or: Spiritus sancti gratia.

“WHO loves Me, keeps My sayings true,
And him My Father loveth too;
We unto him will also come
And make in him Our house and home.

2 “Who loves Me not, he doth decline
To keep My Word, which is not Mine,
But rather ’tis My Father’s Word,
And His who sent Me,” saith the Lord:

3 “These things I’ve spoken unto you
While yet I present am with you;
That ye may grasp them and recall,
The Comfortor shall teach you all.

4 “Him will the Father in My name
Send down, to speak to you the same,
And all the words ye hear Me preach
He will remind, expound, and teach.

5 “My peace I leave and give to you,
And give not as the world would do,
So let your heart not troubled be,
Be not afraid, act fearlessly.

6 “For although now I go away,
Yet will I come again one day,
If Me ye loved, ye joy would know,
Because I to My Father go.

7 “My Father greater is than I,
Therefore these things I specify,
That when these things ye shall perceive
To come to pass, ye might believe.

8 “I will not talk much with you hence,
For now approaches this world’s prince,
With pomp and warlike company,
But he no portion hath in Me.

9 “But that the world may know that I
Do what must please My Father high
And what He duly hath decreed,
My love I demonstrate in deed.”

drum sag ichs euch so eigentlich,
auf das, wenn kommt die selber Stund,
ihr solchs, wenns geschicht, glauben künnt.

8 Forthin werd ich mit euch nit mehr
viel reden, denn es kommt daher
der Fürst der Welt mit seim Panier,
aber er hat kein Theil an mir.

9 Auf daß erkennen kann die Welt,
daß ich thu, was meim Vater gfällt,
und was er mir befohlen hat,
mein Lieb beweis ich mit der That.

O Lieb, o Lieb, o Wunderkraft

Here is my translation of the Whitsunday hymn, “O Lieb, o Lieb, o Wunderkraft” (L. Laurentii, 1700), the author’s first of two hymns for the occasion, being a fervent call for true charity.

Mel.: Kommt her zu mir, spricht Gottes Sohn.

O LOVE, O Love! O wondrous might!
Sweet unction, cordial of delight!
Refreshment ever blessed!
O Love, to which the Spirit sent
From God’s own heart, our heart hath bent,
That life may be possessèd!

2 What soul would not this oil of joy
Seek from the Spirit, and employ
Faith’s powers of receiving,
Since as is called for by the Lord,
We fittingly can keep His Word,
The sinful pathway leaving?

3 The world saith, “’Tis not in man’s reach
To do as Jesus here doth teach,
And us to keep it presseth.”
Yea, he that would the Lord repeat
Is hauled before their judgment seat
As if he sore transgresseth.

4 Since they all faith and love dispel,
The truth is also hidden well,
And none today would know this—
That it is in faith’s pow’r and strength
The Spirit’s work is done at length,
Nor can they halt nor slow this.

5 He in whose heart is Jesus’ love
Will follow, and in action prove,
That it is his great pleasure.
If he in diligence of faith
May do God’s will and what He saith,
And count it all his treasure.

6 Indeed a Christian much can do,
If to the Lord his heart is true,
And in devotion moveth.
The Lord will give him needful pow’r.
Therefore, my soul, begin this hour,
And do what Jesus loveth.

7 Then will the Father (thou must know),
Hold thee most dear, and kindness show
Unto Thy soul delighted;
Yea, Father, Son, and Spirit will
The Savior’s promise here fulfill
And with thee be united.

8 O mighty word, O wondrous thing!
Think, soul, in spirit pondering:
God would in thee be dwelling,
If thou wilt keep His will in faith,
So keep it even unto death;
He’ll give thee gifts excelling.

9 Then in the fight of faith persist,
Nor let th’ abyss’s smoke and mist
To fear and blindness guide thee.
The love of Jesus breaketh through,
God is thy Shield and Refuge true,
Thy Fortress, who will hide thee.

10 The Spirit’s workings in the heart
Come from on high by lofty art,
The world bewild’ring ever.
Who loveth Christ doth wondrous deeds,
And though the world them little heeds,
It can prevent them never.

11 O blinded world, how piteously
Thou fool’st thyself in vanity,
And thus the truth defiest,
Insisting thou art saved above
Alone, devoid of godly love,
As thou its pow’r deniest.

12 Not in those souls doth God reside
Who without light of faith abide
In gloom of darkness heedless;
Who evil do, and His decree
Keep not, because unchristianly
They hold it all is needless.

13 Oh, from the world remove me, Lord,
Which loves Thee not, nor keeps Thy Word,
Nor longs to keep it ever;
Give me the pow’r to love Thee, Lord,
And let me strive to keep Thy Word,
Till Thou my cord wilt sever.

GERMAN

O Lieb, o Lieb, o Wunderkraft,
O süßes Öl, o Freudensaft!
O seliges Erquicken!
O, Liebe, die der Heilge Geist
Aus Gottes Herzen uns anpreist,
Ihr selig zu genießen.

2 Wer wollte nicht dies Freuden-Öl
Vom Heilgen Geist in seine Seel
In Glaubenskraft auffassen?
Weil man, was Jesus fordert hier,

Trotz allen Hindernissen.

5 Wer Jesu Lieb im Herzen hat,
Der wird ihm folgen in der That
Und das ist seine Wonne,
Wenn er in stetem Glaubensfleiß
Nach Gottes Willen und Geheiß
Mag folgen seiner Sonne.

6 Ja, viel wahrhaftig kann ein Christ,
Wenn er getreu dem Herren ist
Und dem sich ganz ergibet,
Der hierzu Kräfte geben kann.
Drum meine Seele, fang nur an
Und thu, was Jesus liebet.

7 So wird der Vater lieben dich,
Bedenk es wohl, und freundlich sich
Erweisen deiner Seelen.
Ja, Vater, Sohn und Heilger Geist
Will, wie dein Jesus hier verheißt,

Wer Jesum liebt, thut Wunderding
Und ob es für der Welt gering,
Muß sies geschehen lassen.

11 O, blinde Welt, wie thörst du dich
Bei deinem Glauben jämmerlich
In dem du fälschlich meinest,
Daß du im Glaubenswahn allein
Willst ohne Liebe selig sein,
Weil du die Kraft verneinest.

12 Gott wohnet ja wahrhaftig nicht
In Seelen, die ohn Glaubenslicht,
In Finternissen bleiben,
