Der Teufel ist ein starker Feind

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Der Teufel ist ein starker Feind” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, for Oculi Sunday.

Mel.: Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott.

THE devil is a mighty foe,
From God he hath us driven;
Yet blest is he who here below
Trusts in our Friend from heaven,
Who is strong to save,
And in battle grave
Doth hell’s tyrant fight,
And puts his host to flight,
Else were all men his captives.

2 The Word by Satan is despised,
He fain would still its teaching,
Or that, if one should speak of Christ,
No ear might hear that preaching.
He works daily here,
Hind’ring mouth and ear
Makes men mute and dumb,
Deaf to the truth, and numb,
And hearts of men doth harden.

3 No man from his dread tyranny
Would freedom keep securely;
If Christ had not come mightily
We all would perish surely.
But this Champion bold
All the field doth hold,
Drives the devil out
And from hell doth rout,
And frees both speech and hearing.

4 This by God’s Finger He performs,
And to His kingdom brings us,
And by His mighty grace disarms
The foe who smites and stings us
In our mouth and ear;
Blest are all who hear,
And God’s Word receive
Nor will it lose nor leave.
God grant it may preserve us!

Der Teufel ist ein starker Feind,
hat uns von Gott gerautet:
Doch ist Christus ein stärker Freund,
wohl dem, so ihm verdrauet:
Er kömmt in die Welt,
schlägt auf sein Gezelt
wider den Tyrann,
für welchem sonst kein Mann
ungefangen konnt bleiben.

2 Der Satan ist dem Wort sehr gramm,
wollt, daß es niemand lehrte,
oder wenn jemand sagt darvon,
daß es doch keiner hörte,
treibt mit Ernst die Sach,
verhindert die Sprach,
macht die Menschen stumm,
und am Gehöre dumm,
verstocket auch die Herzen.

3 Vor so greulicher Tyrannei,
wär niemand frei auf Erden.
Wenn Christus nicht selbs käm herbei,
müßten wir all verderben.
Aber dieser Held,
ist stärker zu Feld,
belagert das Haus,
und treibt den Teufel aus,
daß man wohl red und höre.

4 Solchs er durch Gottes Finger thut,
und sein Reich zu uns bringet.
Verwundert euch der starken Güt,
damit er überwindet
Munds und Ohren Feind!
Selig alle seind,
die Gottes Wort hörn
und nicht wieder verliern.
Gott helf es uns bewahren! Amen.
