Ist Gott für mich, was kann

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Ist Gott für mich, was kann” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst for Oculi.

Mel.: O Jesu, Gottes Lamm.

IF God be for me, then
  how can the devil harm me?
Though I am in the world,
 and many griefs alarm me,
My eyes look to my God
 when troubles round me fall,
For He in life and death
 hath pow’r to change them all.

2 He who the Stronger is,
 the strong one soon o’erpow’reth.
He takes from him his spoils.
 who else all things devoureth;
His head is trampled down,
 Christ did the foe subdue;
The serpent harms not him
who is a Christian true.

3 How blessed is the man
 who hears this consolation,
who lets God’s Word reveal
 the way to his salvation.
Who in God’s love abides,
 no foe can take away
From him his blessedness,
 And he is God’s for aye.

Ist Gott für mich? Was kann
 der arge Feind mir schaden?
Bin ich gleich in der Welt
 mit vieler Angst beladen,
mein Augen sehn zu Gott
 in aller meiner Noth,
der alles ändern kann
 im Leben und im Tod.

2 Der stärker ist, kann wohl
den Starken selbst bezwingen,
er nimmt ihm seinen Raub;
der alles wollt verschlingen,
liegt selbst zu Boden, weil
 der Kopf zutreten ist,
was schadt die Schlange dem,
 der ist ein wahrer Christ?

3 Wie selig ist der Mensch,
 der diesen Tros tkann hören,
der sich läßt Gottes Wort
 den Weg zum Leben lehren,
der bleibt in Gotts Huld, den
 die Seligkeit kann kein
Feind rauben nicht in all-
 e Ewigkeit. Amen!
