Here is my translation of the hymn, “Als Jesus schiffet über Meer” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia, for Laetare. Gesius 1605 appoints the

Mel.: Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gmein.

  

WHEN Christ our Lord went o’er the sea

A great throng did pursue Him,

Because they saw the works that He

Did on the sick brought to Him.

Into a mountain up He went

A mighty work to do He meant,

The Passover was nearing.

2 When He then lifted up His eyes

He spake to Philip saying:

A very mighty host before thee lies.

And further asked Him, saying:

Whence shall we buy sufficent bread

That these in hunger may be fed?

And this He said to prove him.

3 But Philip answered Him and said

If bread were brought before them,

Two hundred pennyworth of bread

Were not sufficient for them.

Five barley loaves, then Andrew saith,

And two small fish a lad here hath,

What’s that among so many?

4 Then make the men sit down, said He:

To feed them I am able;

The fish and loaves bring unto Me

But ye shall serve at table.

He blest and brake the fish and bread,

Gave His disciples all, and bade

Them serve it to the people

5 There were five thousand men well filled,

And wives and young that hour,

For by this work Christ Jesus willed

To show His godly power.

When all had eaten of the food,

Twelve baskets with the fragments stood.

The Lord bade them be gathered.

6 The people saw this work of His,

And marveled at the token:

This of a truth that prophet is

Of whom the seers had spoken!

When Christ therefore perceived that they

Would come and make Him king, away

Alone He then departed.

*7 We thank Thee, God, who daily bread

Dost make for us to flourish,

And lest we starve, dost keep us fed,

And dost our children nourish.

Lord Christ, help us thank Thee the more,

And gather up what is left o’er,

And share it with the needy!

Als Jesus schiffet über Meer,

sehr viel Volks ihm nachreiset,

die sahen sein große Wunder,

die er an Kranken beweiset,

er setzt sich nieder auf ein Berg,

und hat für ein groß Wunderwerk,

weils Osterfest nah ware.

2 Da er nun hub sein Augen auf

zu Philippo er saget:

Des Volks ist sehr ein großer Hauf,

und weiter ihn auch fraget,

wo solln wir kaufen so viel Brot,

daß wir sie speisen jetzt zur Noth?

Damit er ihn versuchet.

3 Philippus aber darauf scpricht:

Sollt man ihn Brot vortragen,

zwei hundert Pfennig klecken nicht,

daß jeder möcht was haben.

Andreas sprach: Fünf Gerstenbrot

auch wenig Fisch ein Knäblein hat.

Was ists unter so vielen?

4 So laßt das Volk nur lägern sich,

bring mir die Brot und Fische,

sprach Jesus; laßt austheilen mich,

ihr aber dient zu Tische.

Da segnet er die Fisch und Brot,

gab sie den Jüngern und gebot,

daß sies dem Volk vortrügen.

5 Da wurden bei fünf tausend Mann

alle reichlich gespeiset,

damit Christus bei jedermann

sein göttlich Kraft beweiset.

Zwölf Körb mit Brocken hub man auf,

da gessen hätt ein solcher Hauf,

der Herr hieß sie aufsammlen.

6 Da Christ der Herr das Zeichen thet,

und die Leut solches sahen,

fürwahr, das ist der recht Prophet,

der kommen soll, sie sprachen:

Da er merkt, das Volk haben wollt,

daß er ihr König werden sollt,

entweich er gar alleine.

*7 Wir danken Gott, ders täglich Brot

reichlcih gibt und bescheret,

und erhält uns vor Hungersnoth,

und uns sein Kinder nähret.

Herr Christ, hilf, daß wir dankbar sein,

und aufheben die Brosamlein,

und Armen auch mittheilen.
