Also hat Gott, das höchste Gut

Here is my translation of the Pentecost hymn “Also hat Gott, das höchste Gut” (E. Neumeister, d. 1756), his fourth text on the Gospel lesson from John 3. This uses the more familiar LHM (Lutheran hymn meter) 87.87.887.

Mel.: Allein Gott in der Höh sei Ehr.

FOR God, the highest Good, so loved
The world in error straying—
The world that ever wicked proved,
His love so ill repaying—
That He gave His beloved Son,
Who reigns in heav’n with Him as One,
And to the world He sent Him.

2 He gave Him into grief and woe,
That He might them deliver.
He made Him to the cross to go,
That they might live forever.
He gave Him to damnation o’er,
That they might all be blest the more,
And gain their true salvation.

3 Now whosoever doth believe
In Jesus Christ the Savior,
And boldly to His merit cleave,
Nor from the faith doth waver,
Shall stand in God’s free love and grace,
In life eternal have a place,
And he shall never perish.

4 In this God’s love and healing salve
And in all suchlike treasures
I too my certain portion have
For everlasting pleasures.
My trust is firm, all doubting hence!
Of this my faith’s sure confidence
No devil shall bereave me!

5 Grant, dearest God, that I may Thee
Love with my heart sincerely.
Love’s Spirit send to strengthen me,
To burn in love more clearly
In all that’s dear and The doth please,
Through Jesus Christ, and ne’er to cease,
But live in Him entirely.

6 Though weakness and inconstancy
Is all that is within me,
Yet if Thou from all vanity
Forever draw and win me,
Then I shall love Thee ever too
With love as perfect and as true
As Thou wilt make me yonder.

7 But meanwhile heaven now is mine,
I am its heir as surely
As if I walked its halls divine;
On this I die securely.
To live is good, since God loves me;
To die is good, for blest I’ll be,
Still by His love surrounded.

Also hat Gott, das höchste Gut,
die böse Welt geliebet!
Die Welt, die lauter Übels thut,
und ihn so hoch betrübet,
daß er auch seinen liebsten Sohn,
der mit ihm herrscht auf einem Thron
derselben hat gegeben.

2 Er gab ihn hin in Angst und Noth,
daß er ihr Rettung brächte.
Er gab ihn hin in Kreuz und Tod,
damit sie leben möchte.
Er gab ihn zur Verdammnis hin,
daß sie dargegen zum Gewinn
die Seligkeit erlangte

3 Nun, welcher Mensch nur auf der Welt
an Jesum Christum gläubet,
an sein Verdienst sich freudig hält,
und treu im Glauben bleibet,
der soll in Gottes Gnade stehn,
ins Reich dees ewgen Lebens gehn,
und nicht verloren werden.

4 An solcher Lieb, an solchem Heil,
an allen solchen Schätzen,
hab ich auch mein gewisses Theil
zu ewigem Ergötzen.
Ich gläube fest, und zweifel nicht.
Und meines Glaubens Zuversicht
soll mir kein Teufel rauben.

5 Gieb, liebster Gott, daß ich auch dich
von ganzem Herzen liebe.
Dein Geist der Liebe stärke mich,
daß ich mich brünstig übe
in allem, das durch Jesum Christ
dir lieb und wohlgefällig ist,
und ich ganz in ihm lebe.

6 Zwar Schwach- und Unvollkommenheit
wird alles an mir heißen;
doch wenn du mich der Eitelkeit
auf ewig wirst entreissen,
so lieb ich dich auch ewiglich,
und so vollkommen, als du mich
allda wirst selber machen.

7 Indessen ist der Himmel mein,
und so gewiß mein Erbe,
als könnt ich jetzt schon drinnen sein,
worauf ich leb und sterbe.
Es lebt sich gut, weil Gott mich liebt;
auch stirbt sichs gut, denn unbetrübt
sterb ich in seiner Liebe.
