O Heiliger Gott, du göttlichs Feur

Here is my translation of the Pentecost hymn, “O Heiliger Gott, du göttlichs Feur” (Melchior Vulpius, d. 1615), in ELGB #184. Fischer has no entry in his lexicon. I find the text with melody in Stenger’s Christlich-neüvermehrt- und gebessertes Gsb (1663), p. 180f. The meter follows Vulpius’ taste for innovation in melody: 99.89 + Kyrie, perhaps suggested by the natural rhythm of German “O heiliger Geist.” Schöberlein gives a full harmonized setting in his Schatz.

 

O SPIRIT of God, Thou Fire divine
Come to our succor with gifts of Thine,
Help us to love Christ heartily,
And in true faith daily practiced be.
Kyrie eleison, Kyrie eleison.

2 O Comforter, highest Good and Stay,
In mortal anguish our mind allay,
Lest e’er the devil us efface;
In conscience comfort us with Thy grace.

3 Unless Thou shalt come with Thy great pow’r
And make Thy doctrine and love to flow’r,
All care and effort are in vain.
O come to us, and Thy love make plain.

How lovely is Thy coming now,
No man Thy fitting praise can show.
