Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wir bitten euch noch mehr” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst, for Reminiscere, a paraphrase of the Epistle, 1 Thess. 4:1–7.

Mel.: O Jesu, Gottes Lamm.

ONCE more we you beseech,
Receive our exhortation
Which in the Lord we make,
To flee from all transgression,
And walk as pleaseth God,
And as ye justly ought,
In godliness increase,
Lest ye astray be brought.

2 This is the will of God,
Be sanctified, abstaining
From fornication’s vice,
All carnal lust disdaining,
And Gentiles’ blinded ways
Who know not God the Lord,
But live as senseless beasts.
Disgrace is their reward.

3 Let every one of you
Possess his vessel holy,
In honor—old and young,
Great lord and peasant lowly.
Let no man go beyond,
But live upright and just.
He erreth who defrauds
And breaks his brother’s trust.

4 For know, the Lord our God
Is of all sins th’ Avenger,
As oft ye have been told,
They bring great threat and danger.
For God hath called us not
To filth and things unclean,
But (as He holy is)
To holiness pristine.

Wir bitten euch noch mehr,
laß unser Wort Statt finden,
denn wir vermahnen euch
im Herrn, flieht alle Sünden,
und wandelt wie es Gott
gefällt, wie sichs gebührt,
‘seid immer frömmer, seht,
daß ihr nicht werdt verführt.

2 Denn das ist Gottes Will,
seid heilig, daß ihr meidet
die Schand und Hurerei
und nicht Lustseuche leidet
noch blinder Heiden Arth,
die wissen nichts von Gott,
und leben als das Vieh,
ihr Lohn ist Schmach und Spott.

3 Ein jeder unter euch
soll sein Faß rein behalten
in Ehr und Heiligkeit,
die Jungen samt den Alten,
es greife niemand nicht
zu weit, lebt recht und schlecht,
der Handels Vortheil an
dem Bruder ist nicht recht.

4 Denn der HErr unser Gott
ist Rächer aller Sünden,
es ist euch oft gesagt,
die Strafe wird sich finden,
Gott hat uns nicht beruft
zu der Unreinigkeit,
der allein heilig ist,
ruft uns zur Heiligkeit.
