Stärk uns, Mittler, dein sind wir / Stärke, Mittler, stärke sie

Here is my translation of the confirmation hymn, “Stärk uns, Mittler, dein sind wir” (Dr. Balthasar Münter, d. 1793), in GGELB #252 , with assignment of proper melody. According to Kümmerle, it originates from the hymn, “Stärke, Mittler, deine Teurerlösten” in the author’s Erster Sammlung Geistlicher Lieder (1772), an alternating hymn between choir and congregation “at the confirmation of young Christians,” which was then reworked by C. C. Sturm into a prayer-hymn to be sung by confirmands, and thus came into Württemberg Gsb 1791 [melody: Mitten wir im Leben sind], and in 1793 (the year of Münter’s death) received its own moving proper melody by Justin Heinrich Knecht. I include Münter’s orginal form below as well.

STRENGTHEN, Mediator, Thine
Who now stand before Thee:
Let us see Thy face divine,
Keep us, we implore Thee,
Watch o’er our souls forever!
For here we stand and pledge to Thee:
Thy possession, Lord, are we!
Holy Creator God;
Holy Redeemer God;
Holy Lord God, Teacher and Couns’lor;
O dear Triune God!
Keep us mindful ever
Of our sacred covenant;
Have mercy, O Lord!

Stärk uns, Mittler, dein sind wir!
Sieh, wir alle flehen:
Laß, laß, o Barmherziger,
uns dein Antlitz sehen!
Wach über unsre Seelen!
Hier stehn und sprechen alle wir:
Herr, dein Eigenthum sind wir!
Heiliger Schöpfer Gott;
Heiliger Mittler Gott;
Heiliger Gott, Lehrer und Tröster;
Dreieiniger Gott!
Laß uns nie vergessen
unsern theuren heilgen Bund;
Erbarm dich unser!

MÜNTER’S ORIGINAL FORM:

STRENGTHEN, Mediator, these
Thy dear-bought possession!
Let their trust in Thee increase,
Be their consolation.
Watch o’er their souls forever!
They stand and make their pledge to Thee:
Thy possession, Lord, are we!
Holy Creator God;
Holy Redeemer God;
Holy Lord God, Teacher and Couns’lor;
O dear Triune God!
Keep them ever mindful
Of their great and precious oath,
O Lord, in Thy name!

2 Oh, how many have sworn yet
To be Thine forever
But unfaithfully have let
Love grow cold and waver,
And ruin was their ending!
Let these dedicated now
Ever hold to Thee their vow!
Holy Creator God;
Holy Redeemer God;
Holy Lord God, Teacher and Couns’lor;
O dear Triune God!
Strengthen these, Thy children,
In the confidence of faith
And virtue sincere!

3 Should some passion or delight
Of the world allure them,
Oh, then let Thy heav’nly might
From on high secure them,
And fighting, gain the vict’ry!
And should some fire of passion start,
Quench it promptly in their heart.
Holy Creator God;
Holy Redeemer God;
Holy Lord God, Teacher and Couns’lor;
O dear Triune God!
Let them thus victorious
Overcome all foes, and find
Salvation with Thee!

4 Let them, e’en in throes of death—
Thy dear-bought possession—
Find in Thee the ground of faith
And their consolation.
Include them in Thy number.
Bring them some day with us all
To Thy blest eternal hall.
Holy Creator God;
Holy Redeemer God;
Holy Lord God, Teacher and Couns’lor;
O dear Triune God!
Keep them ever mindful
Of their great and precious oath,
O Lord, in Thy name!

Stärke, Mittler, stärke sie,

Verderben ward ihr Ende.
Beständig laß dir diese sein,

ach! du wollest sie mit Kraft

Laß streiten sie und siegen.
Die Triebe zu verbotner Lust
dämpfe früh in ihrer Brust.
Heiliger Schöpfer Gott;
Heiliger Mittler Gott;
Heiliger Gott, Lehrer und Tröster;
Dreieiniger Gott!
Laß sie ihre Feinde,
alle Hasser ihres Heils

4 In der Todesnoth laß sie,
deine Theurerlösten,
daß ihr Glaube standhaft blieb,
unaussprechlich trösten.
Zähl sie zu deinen Toden.
Einst führe sie mit uns zugleich

Heiliger Schöpfer Gott;

Dreieiniger Gott!
Stärke sie, die Deinen,
in des Glaubens Zuversicht

Erhör, o Gott! das heiße Flehn

Here is my translation of the confirmation (congregational) hymn, “Erhör, o Gott! das heiße Flehn” (Anon. 18th c.), in GGELB #249 and #250 with melody assignment “Komm heilger Geist, Herre Gott” and rubric “As the Congregation sings it.” The two hymns are counterparts for congregation and responding confirmands, and this hymnal are ascribed to the “Hanover Gsb.” The German text is absent from Fischer’s lexicon and appears to stem from the 18th c., employing the later form of the meter with an extra syllable in the first line. I find it (and its counterpart) in the Harz Gsb (Clausthal, 1768) with almost identical rubrics, and listed as one hymn with two parts, (a) and (b); so also Ziegler’s Christliches Gsb (1789ff.), Mecklenburg 1794. In my translation I follow the meter most typical now in English use, which makes all trochaic lines iambic by the addition or reduction of slurs as appropriate.

A. (Congregation)
GOD, hear the heart’s fervent plea
Of these Thy children come to Thee!
In mercy look upon them now,
Thy members they, their Head art Thou:
O Father, Son, and Spirit, Lord,
The blessing promised in Thy Word
Give them, and with Thy gifts them fill,
And comfort give their soul in every ill.
Have mercy, Lord! Have mercy, Lord!

2 They would this day, firm and true,
Their covenant with Thee renew,
And solemnly their pledge confirm,
To love Thee through life’s bitter term,
Unswayed in faith, in purity,
And guileless in their walk to be.
O Triune God! Amen proclaim,
And seal the pledge they tender in Thy name:
And strengthen them! And strengthen them!

3 Let them a bold heart possess,
And plant their pledge’s sacredness
Within their soul so strong and deep
That what they purpose, they may keep.
And let us too, with lips and heart,
Renew Thy cov’nant for our part,
And some day joined, as we implore,
Go with them through Thy heaven’s blessed door!
Oh, hear us, God! Oh, hear us, God!

B. (Confirmands)
GOD, hear the heart’s fervent plea
Of us Thy children come to Thee!
In mercy look upon us now,
Thy members we, our Head art Thou!
O Father, Son, and Spirit, Lord,
The blessing promised in Thy Word
Give us, and with Thy gifts us fill,
And comfort give our soul in every ill.
Have mercy, Lord! Have mercy, Lord!

2 We would this day, firm and true,
Our covenant with Thee renew,
And consecrate ourselves to Thee,
And pledge with heart and lips to be
Firm in the faith, in conduct pure
And pure in heart, not sin-secure,
But in all things in Thee to rest,
Nor ever of Thy saving work to jest.
Give us the strength! Give us the strength!

3 Lord, let us bold hearts possess,
And plant our pledge’s sacredness
Within our soul so strong and deep
That what we purpose, we may keep.
Like us, let all with lips and heart
Renew Thy cov’nant for their part,
And let  them all,—Thee we implore!—
Go with us then to heaven evermore!
Oh, hear us, God! Oh, hear us, God!

Liebster Jesu! sieh die Kinder

Here is my translation of the catechetical instruction hymn, “Liebster Jesu! sieh die Kinder” (Ludwig Eberhard Fischer, d. 1773), GGELB #211, with melody assignment “Sollt ich meinem Gott nicht singen,” first appearing in the Württemberg Gsb 1741, which, according to Fischer, the author edited in company with Dr. Tasinger; with title “On the Day of School Visitation and on the occasion of the School Sermon.”

JESUS, see Thy young before Thee,
Sinners dearly bought by Thee,
And redeemed for Thine own glory,
And baptized, Thine own to be!
Lo, they come with purpose sharèd,
In Thy sight, before Thy face;
Now, since Thou hast strength and praise
From their mouths for Thee preparèd,
Hear it as it here ascends
And with choirs above us blends!

2 See, how with the congregation
To the teaching of Thy Word
They approach, whose adoration
With the chosen shall be heard
For all ages without ending;
Therefore these Thou here dost see
Pleasing render unto Thee;
Favor by Thy Spirit lending,
Them and us this hour prepare
As Thou wilt have us be fore’er!

3 Give succcess, Lord, to the planting
And the wa’tring, from on high,
To the seed all vigor granting,
That its fruit may multiply,
And all things be well ordainèd
In the home and church and school,
And all places where Thy rule
For our learning is maintainèd,
That we all may thusly be
Plants to praise and honor Thee.

4 Bring to mind of youth and parents
And of teachers earnestly,
That, if they cause interference,
Heavy will that reck’ning be,
That, when comes that fateful Morrow,
Each, if he has done his due,
In a faithful way and true,
May declare all free from sorrow:
Lo, of those Thou gavest me,
Nothing hath been lost for Thee!

5 Let offense, Lord, be restrainèd,
And this world’s great wickedness,
Which hath many souls detainèd
And doth many a snare possess.
Oh, preserve Thy precious treasure,
And from perils mightily
Save those dearly bought by Thee,
For Thy heart’s eternal pleasure!
For Thy glory and Thy praise,
Keep Thine heritage always!

6 Here we stand this day before Thee,
Our baptismal vows renew,
And with heart and mouth implore Thee,
Keep for each this bond in view.
Help us also, that our spirit,
Soul, and body e’er may be
Blameless and upright to Thee,
Till we shall behold Thee coming,
And as subjects of our King
That new song in heaven sing!

7 Amen! Lob und Preis soll nehmen
unser Gott und unser Lamm!
Alles soll sich dir bequemen,
Held und Hirt aus Davids Stamm!
Du bist kommen zu erkaufen
deine Schaf mit deinem Blut,
als kein Freund für Freunde thut,
da wir in der Irr gelaufen!
Ewig, ewig soll es sein,
daß dich preise Groß und Klein!

Be it so! Amen! All glory
To our God and to the Lamb!
All creation bows before Thee,
Mighty Shepherd, great I AM!
Thou didst come, our guilt repaying,
Shedding blood for sheep untrue,
As no mortal friend would do,
When we were in error straying!
Ever, ever be Thou, Lord,
By both great and small adored!

GERMAN
Liebster Jesu, sieh die Kinder,
die so theur von dir erkauft,
und als die erlösten Sünder
allesamt auf dich getauft,
sammeln sich in dieser Stunde,
hier von deinem Angesicht,
und weil du dir zugericht,
Macht und Lob aus ihrem Munde,
steigt es auch schon hier empor,
und schließt sich zum höhern Chor.

2 Siehe, wie mit Haufen wallen
zu der Lehr aus deinem Wort,
die, von denen soll erschallen
mit den Auserwählten dort,
Lob in alle Ewigkeiten;
mache du doch selber hier
jeden wohlgefällig dir;
lasse deinen Geist bereiten
sie und uns zu dieser Zeit,
wie dus willst in Ewigkeit.

3 Gib zum Pflanzen und Begießen
dein Gedeihen aus der Höh,
laß den Samen wohl ersprießen,
daß man volle Früchte seh,
und sich alles recht bekehre,
in den Häusern, in der Schul,
in der Kirch, und wo dein Stuhl
aufgericht zu unsrer Lehre,
daß wir alle solcher Weis
Pflanzen sein zu deinem Preis.

4 Stelle Lehrern, Eltern, Kindern
ernstlich vor die Rechenschaft,
die, wo sie dein Werk verhindern,
schwer auf dem Gewissen haft,
daß an jenem großen Tage
jeder nach dem Amt und Pflicht
so es treulich ausgericht,
mit preisvollem Munde sage:
Sieh, mich, und die mir geborn;
keines ist davon verlorn.

5 Steure, Herr! den Ärgernissen,
und der Bosheit dieser Welt,
die schon Manchen hingerissen,
und noch immer Netze stellt.
Ach! erhalte in der Treue,
reiße mächtig aus Gefahr,
die so theur erlöste Schaar,
daß dein Herz sich ihrer freue!
Es betrifft, Herr! deinen Ruhm;
schütze doch dein Eigenthum.

6 Wir erneuern heut den Bunde,
den wir in der Tauf gemacht;
bitten dich mit Herz und Munde,
Mache jeden drauf bedacht,
hilf auch selbst, daß es geschehe,
daß der Geist samt Seel und Leib
stets  vor dir unsträflich bleib,
bis er deine Zukunft sehe,
und als deines Reiches Glied
singe dort das neue Lied.

7 Amen! Lob und Preis soll nehmen
unser Gott und unser Lamm!
Alles soll sich dir bequemen,
Held und Hirt aus Davids Stamm!
Du bist kommen zu erkaufen
deine Schaf mit deinem Blut,
als kein Freund für Freunde thut,
da wir in der Irr gelaufen!
Ewig, ewig soll es sein,
daß dich preise Groß und Klein!

Mein Jesu, führe mich

Here is my translation of the Confirmation hymn, “Mein Jesu, führe mich” (Paul Henkel, 1825), in NEGB #126 with melody assignment “O Gott, du frommer Gott” and title “For the Confirmed Youth.” Again, the Confirmation hymn contains substantial material shared with repentance hymns.

MY Jesus, lead Thou me.
The Way and Life I own Thee.
Let me show love to Thee,
More than I yet have shown Thee,
By Thy good Spirit’s strength,
Help me each hour anew,
So let me be at length
More faithful and more true.

2 Thou hast me dearly bought
By suffering and dying;
To Baptism hast me brought
A heav’nly home supplying;
Thus if I wake or sleep,
I should seek heartily
To walk Thy way and keep
Thy covenant with me.

3 But I have seldom drowned
The Old Man and his doing,
Nor lived as I am bound,
The right and good pursuing;
I know it is not good,
My heart cries day and night:
I live not as I should,
O Lord, before Thy sight.

4 Thy Word doth make me know
I have not kept as spoken
The covenantal vow,
But oft the same have broken;
My conscience doth accuse,
Yea, loudly telleth me
That I did oft abuse
And sin, and anger Thee.

5 Astray in heart and mind,
Thy way I have forsaken,
And, hardened, stiff-necked, blind,
The way of sin have taken.
Till now, though often warned,
I ran with slackless pace;
And with unreason scorned
The covenant of grace.

6 From earliest infancy
I have not loved Thee rightly,
But in iniquity
Have walked, alas, despite Thee!
Oh, wilt Thou enter in
To judgment with Thy child,
How shall I favor win
Or find a judgment mild?

7 Since by Thy Word’s pure light
I am instructed ever,
And duty-bound by right
Sincerely to endeavor
To serve Thee faithfully,
Help me Thy banner bear,
And to Thy glory live
And be Thy child fore’er!

8 My God, do Thou forgive
My sin and my transgression,
That I with Thee may live,
Enjoying Thy salvation;
I’m set apart for Thee
By Thy true herald’s hand;
Prepare me, then, to see
The heav’nly Fatherland.

GERMAN
Mein Jesu führe mich,
du bist der Weg, das Leben,
daß ich recht liebe dich,
das kannst du mir selbst gebn,
durch deines Geistes Kraft,
steh du mir allzeit bei,
so wird in mir geschaft,
daß ich dir werde treu.

2 Du hast mich theur erkauft,
durch Leiden und durch Sterben,
dir bin ich auch getauft,
den Himmel zu ererben;
drum sollt ich stets drauf sehn,
daß ich von Herzensgrund,
in deinem Weg mag gehn
und halten deinen Bund.

3 Ich aber habe nicht
der Sünde widerstrebet,
und nicht nach meiner Pflicht
dem Rechten nachgelebet;
das weiß ich leider wohl,
mein Herze sagt es mir,
daß ich nicht, wie ich soll,
so lebe, Herr, vor dir.

4 Dein Wort das macht mir kund,
daß ich nicht, wie versprochen,
gehalten meinen Bund,
den hab ich oft gebrochen;
Gewissen klagt mich an,
ja gar laut sagt es mir,
daß ich oft bös gethan,
gesündigt oft vor dir.

5 Ich arm, verirrtes Kind
hab deinen Weg gefehlet,
verhärt, verstockt und blind
den Sünderweg gewählet,
so lief ich immerhin,
ja, bis zu dieser Stund,
und im verkehrten SInn
veracht den Gnadenbund.

6 Ich hab von Kindheit auf
dich niemals recht geliebet,
in meinem Sündenlauf
dich leider oft betrübet,
ach! wirst du dann mit mir
in das Gerichte gehn,
wie werd ich dann vor dir
gerechter Gott bestehn!

7 Nun bin ich durch dein Wort
ermahnt und unterrichtet,
nun bin ich immerfort
mit Recht dazu verpflichtet,
daß ich mich recht bestreb,
daß ich dir bleibe treu,
und dir zu Ehren leb
und dein Kind ewig sei.

8 Mein Gott, du wollest mir
all meine Sünd vergeben,
damit ich auch bei dir
hab ewig Heil und Leben;
dir bin ich nun geweiht
durch deines Dieners Hand,
mach du mich selbst bereit
fürs himmlisch Vaterland.

Gottes Gnade sei mit euch

Here is my translation of the post-Confirmation hymn, “Gottes Gnade sei mit euch” (Johann Friedrich Köhler, d. 1820), in NEGB #125 in 3 stanzas, omitting those sung by the confirmands, with title “After Communion” and cipher “R,” with melody assignment “Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht.” It appears in hymnals from about 1800 (Duchy of Berg 1800, Natorp’s Sammlung 1803, Arnstadt 1811, Bremen (home) 1812, and abbr. in Selmar’s Ritual für katholische Geistliche 1812), usually with the melody “Jesus meine Zuversicht” assigned and in 5 stanzas with the confirmands’ singing 3–4, with title “Dialog Hymn” specifying the first stanza(s) to be sung by the congregation or choir and 3–4 by the confirmed (and possibly by the better of the young singers at the renewal of Baptism), and the final stanza to be sung by all. Henkel makes it a simple congregational hymn of 3 stanzas. Since the Arnstadt Gsb 1811, ed. Busch, identifies the author as J. F. Köhler. Perhaps the Schwabacher K of Köhler was mistaken for an R (the two characters being somewhat similar in that typeface), unless there is some other explanation for the cipher.

MAY God’s grace be with you all!
May it grant you strength and blessing.
Walk as angels bold and tall,
Your high purpose well possessing.
Great shall be your wages then,
When the Lord shall judge all men.

2 Sacred may ye hold this day,
And the vows that here are spoken.
What your lips and heart did say
Never suffer to be broken!
Yea, though ills and threats impend,
Be ye faithful to the end.

*The Confirmands:

*3 Faith, obedience, constancy—
This we solemnly have sworn Thee;
Hallowed be our heart to Thee,
And our spirit set upon Thee.
Through this covenant with God,
Oh, how blest shall be life’s road!

*4 Strengthen us, Lord, with Thy might!
From the pow’r of sin defend us!
Grant us piously, as right,
From all errors to amend us.
Let our soul be good and pure,
And the light of virtue sure.

*All:

5 See, O Lord, we jointly pray!
Strengthen us, Thy dear creation;
Let us never go astray
From the pathway of salvation.
Everything at last subsides,
Only godly faith abides.

Gottes Gnade sei mit euch!
Sie verleih euch Kraft und Segen.
Wallet freudig, Engeln gleich,
eurem hohen Ziel entgegen.
Groß ist einst der Tugend Lohn
vor des Weltenrichters Thron.

2 Heilig sei euch dieser Tag,
heilig, was ihr jetzt versprochen.
Ach, was Herz und Mund versprach, [Was der Mund vor Gott…]

Bleibt auch in Gefahr und Noth
fromm und treu bis in den Tod.

O wie selig werden wir

Schütz uns vor der Macht der Sünden!
Gieb, daß wir gewissenhaft
jedem Fehler uns entwinden,
laß die Seele fromm und rein
standhaft unsre Tugend sein!]

Herr Jesu, wahrer Seelenhirt

Here is my translation of the Confirmation hymn, “Herr Jesu, wahrer Seelenhirt” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #124, with melody assignment “Es ist gewisslich an der Zeit.” The title is “At the confirmation of the young.” However, the content seems applicable to cases of in which church discipline has been administered; or at least a dose of repentance-preaching and due humbling is embedded. The English counterpart in The Church Hymn Book (1816ff.), “O Jesus, Faithful Shepherd, Lord,” is composed in 6 stanzas of Long Meter.

LORD Jesus, Shepherd of the way,
And Friend of mortals lowly
Thou seek’st the sheep that go astray
And mak’st the sinner holy;
Their Life, their Lord, their Righteousness,
Thou freest them from all distress
Who heartily will seek Thee.

2 Behold with pity, not with wrath,
The flock before Thee growing;
None else can save them from the path
On which they have been going—
The path that leads to death for aye,
The path on which they go astray
As sheep without direction.

3 Before their birth Thou didst begin
To be their Lord and Savior,
Nor leav’st them on the path of sin
That they should die forever;
Thy blood hath bought Thy children prized,
And in Thy name they were baptized
And with Thy hand were hallowed.

4 Oh, that the cov’nant they ignore,
And yet feel not convicted!
Their heart should have been wounded sore,
Their souls, have been afflicted,
That they lived not before Thee so,
Nor sought the good as they did owe,
And as Thou hast commanded.

5 O Father, righteous God, forgive
Their sin and their transgression,
And let them in Thy favor live,
For Jesus’ death and Passion;
Thou wilt not banish from Thy grace
Those, Lord, who will but seek Thy face.
On these poor souls have mercy!

6 May they again be joined with Thee
Lord, in Thy cov’nant holy,
And therein ever steadfast be,
In Thy way going solely;
In time of trouble help afford,
And keep them in Thy faith and Word
Until their life is ended.

CHURCH HYMN BOOK
O Jesus, faithful Shepherd, Lord!
We pray, thy heav'nly grace afford,
Thou art the life, the truth and way,
Thou seekest those that go astray.

2 Look on the flock presented here,
Who at thy throne of grace appear;
They are the purchase of thy blood,
And dedicated unto God.

3 Thy mercy kept them all their days,
Though they have walk'd in sinful ways:
The way wherein great numbers go,
The way that leads to endless woe.

4 Their hearts should be with grief oppress'd
And godly sorrow fill each breast;
Sure they would mourn, could they but see
How they have err'd and stray'd from thee.

5 O Let thy grace and love be felt,
And cause their stony hearts to melt;
Make deep impressions on their mind,
That makes them humble and resign'd.

6 Shew mercy, Lord, to them, we pray,
Grant light and life, in which they may,
Return to thee, their Lord again,
And faithful until death remain.

Herr Jesu, wahrer Seelenhirt,
du Freund der Menschenkinder,
du suchst die Schafe die verirrt,
errettst die arme Sünder;
du bist ihr Leben, Herr und Gott,
befreiest die von aller Noth,
die dich von Herzen suchen.

2 Drum siehe mit Erbarmen an
die Heerde vor dir stehen,
weil niemand sonst sie retten kann
vom Wege den sie gehen;
vom Wege, der zum Tode führt,
vom Weg worauf sie sind verirrt
als die verlorne Schafe.

3 Du hast sie ja von Kindheit auf
erhalten vom Verderben,
auch nicht in ihrem Sündenlauf
sie lassen ewig sterben;
dein Blut hat sie gar theur erkauft,
sie sind in deinem Nam getauft,
und dir ja selbst geweihet.

4 Ach, Jammer! daß sie in dem BUnd
mit dir nicht treu geblieben,
die Herzen sollten sein verwundt,
die Seelen sich betrüben,
daß sie vor dir nicht so gelebt,
daß sie dem Guten nachgestrebt,
wie du selbst hast befohlen.

5 Ach, Vater, ach, gerechter Gott!
vergib doch alle Sünden;
um Jesu Leiden, Pein und Tod
laß wieder Gnade finden;
die wirst du ja verstoßen nicht,
die suchen, Herr, dein Angesicht.
Erbarme dich der Armen.

6 Gib Jesu, daß sie ganz aufs Neu
mit dir im Bunde stehen,
und auch beständig bleiben treu
in deinem Weg zu gehen;
steh ihnen bei in aller Noth,
erhalte sie bis in den Tod,
in deinem Wort und Glauben.

O heiliger Geist! sei heut und allezeit mit uns

Here is my translation of the Sequence “O heiliger Geist! sei heut und allezeit mit uns” (Peter Herbert, 1531), in ELGB #298 (as a Confirmation hymn), a German rendering of the Latin Pentecost Day sequence, “Sancti Spiritus assit nobis gratia” (Bl. Notker, 9th c.), the Latin of which was retained by early Lutheran music compendia (e.g., Bonnus, Ludecus, Eler, Lossius, and Cantica sacra Magdeburg). The German, which follows roughly the Latin sense and melody but adds rhymes, appears in Kirchengeseng (1531, 1566), fol. 105b ff. Having already translated the Latin text for my book Lutheran Sequences, I here present a translation of the Bohemian Brethren version, which may be interesting to compare. Herbert has made different choices in dividing the text, generally preferring longer lines, and rhyming mostly across the repeat rather than within where lines are shorter, but rhyming within each half of the “stanza” when longer lines are used.

Choir:
O SPIRIT of God
Be with us now and evermore.

Congregation:
1 Be pleased our hearts to borrow,
For Thine eternal dwelling own us:
Blot out all sin and sorrow,
Pour Thy holy unction upon us.

2 O Spirit, we pray,
Our mind and sense enlighten:
Work in us this day,
Our ways begin to righten.

3 O Thou Lover of the godly,
Consoler of the lowly:
Come and spread Thy succor broadly,
Perform Thy purpose holy.

4 Believers’ minds Thou dost render clean
From error, sins, and foolishness:
O brighten our hearts to heav’nly sheen,
Our foot upon truth’s pathway press.

5 That so we may know and own by Thy light
The Savior aright:
Whom only those hearts made pure, Lord, by Thee
In faith come to see.

6 Godly prophets by pow’r of Thee
Foretold the coming of the Christ so many a century:
Thou didst th’ Apostles strengthen so
That by their preaching they did the works of Christ the Lord forthshow.

7 By Thee was the Gospel’s message comforting
Spread abroad, and the Church made forth to spring:
With wonders and signs attested with great pow’r,
And enlarged quickly like a summer show’r.

8 Fountain pure and sweet,
That flows with healing from the Mercy-seat:
Thou restor’st the heart,
And soft’ning it, dost Thy new Law impart.

9 Thou gatherest here Christ’s flock as one,
From lands and tribes of every language known:
Thou givest them love for all His Word,
And mak’st them live to glorify the Lord.

10 Therefore we beseech Thee suppliantly,
Hear us on this day, O Holy Ghost, graciously:
For without Thee is our work in vain,
And without Thy help, no man may God’s favor gain.

11 Thou by whom all the saints to the faith were brought,
By whose gifts they also were well taught,
Made strong in the faith, and salvation got:
Strengthen us also in faith and confidence,
Defend us from the foe’s virulence,
Make us perfect before God’s countenance:

12 And lead us to eternal luminance. Amen.

mach uns völlig vor Gottes Angesicht.

12 Und leit uns zu der ewigen Klarheit. Amen.

O Vaterherz, o Licht, o Leben

Here is my translation of the hymn “O Vaterherz, O Licht, O Leben” (Carl Heinrich von Bogatzky, d. 1774) on the surrender of the heart to God. In Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #294 it appears in a cento of eight stanzas, ommitting 5–7, and is located in the category “Holy Sacraments,” suggesting its use as a Confirmation hymn. Fischer notes that the hymn, which appears first in the Cöthen hymnal of 1736 (I take my stanzas 5-7 from the 1768 edition), later appears in his home devotional Tägliches Hausbuch (1748) with only the first three stanzas. It was written while Bogatzky was staying at the house of Count Erdmann Heinrich Henkel zu Pötzig after a 3-month cure in Karlsbad’s baths for physical and spiritual recuperation. He himself said about the hymn “I had a special refreshment in it. The close presence of my Savior was very close and comforting to me. I saw Him as my Adviser and Leader, and although subjects do not very often like when their supervisors are always around them, attending to their every action, it was on the contrary very welcome and comforting to me that my Savior should be always with me and looking at me, and I sincerely asked Him always to pay close attention to me and let me not take one step alone. And all that was in my heart I put into this hymn, which, as it was uplifting to me, also later served to awaken others. . .” The appointed melody is “Wie wohl ist mir, o Freund der Seelen.”

THOU Father’s Heart, Thou Light of heaven,
Life, Shepherd true, Immanuel!
Into Thy hands I have been given,
My soul doth in Thy shelter dwell;
I would no more be self-directed;
To fathers sons should be subjected;
So make Thy presence to me known,
In every step I take, precede me,
(Oh, as I pray, Lord Jesus, heed me!)
I would not take one step alone.

2 I’m but a feeble child and brittle,
Bereft of wisdom, strength, and speed;
Therefore in matters great or little,
Be Thou my wisdom and my deed.
Of me Thou wilt not be ashamèd,
By me Thou as my all art namèd,
And Thou Thyself my all wouldst be;
Thus to all things be Thou attending,
Be Thou beginning, middle, ending;
Then naught but blessings comes to me.

3 Thou, guiding, keepest me from sliding,
Thy Word no treach’rous way doth know;
Thou speakest, with Thy eye me guiding,
Thy face before me e’er shall go;
Thy mercy, pity, and great favor
Shall hold me and embrace me ever;
Oh, that I may but childlike be,
In all things trustingly implore Thee,
And at Thy signal ne’er ignore Thee,
Each day new faithfulness may see!

4 Oh, that I may a glimpse be granted
Of all Thy wisdom, truth, and grace,
That in the faith more firmly planted,
At peace, I may Thee love and praise;
Leave all to Thy wise will and pleasure,
To keep the order, goal and measure;
For if I lead I lose the sight.
With what will serve Thee best content me,
From selfish purposes prevent me;
Whatever Thou ordain’st is right!

[5 What meadow’s best alone Thou knowest,
Thou knowest what may hurt or kill,
So let Thy sheep go where Thou goest,
Avoiding what would nourish ill.
Oh, let me cease from Thee to wander,
Nor come to ruin here or yonder,
For poison often seems most fair!
Oh, keep my soul yet firm, unyielding,
And guard me, rod and crozier wielding,
And me in all temptation spare.

6 Lord, ever move me by Thy guiding,
To watch and wrestle, pray and sigh.
Thy Word let, in my heart abiding,
With Life and Spirit me supply;
Forever let Thy call implore me
To walk with fear and as before Thee,
And self-examine faithfully:
My inner life be Thou increasing,
That I may bear Thee fruit unceasing,
In nothing lax nor slothful be.

7 Oh, that I had not vainly wasted
My time and pow’r, and Thee ignored!
Oh, that I had to heaven hasted!
My Champion, gird Thou on Thy sword,
And break through every hindrance surely,
Yea, henceforth let me step securely
According as Thy Word directs,
In all my words and works oh, let me
Look only to Thy Spirit’s leading,
And not what my own will expects.]

8 Oh! make me faithful, firm, unstirring,
Enabled e’er to follow Thee.
Alone Thy will, Thy will unerring,
My bound’ry, course, and pathway be.
Let me no self-advantage ponder,
Yea, let me be of nothing fonder,
Than that Thy holy name be blest;
On earth be that my sole endeavor—
Oh! Let it be deflected never,
For I’m Thy property possessed.

9 Let me in Thee give honor duly
To Love, Thy Father throned in heav’n;
Let Thy good Spirit show me truly
How Thou by Him to me art giv’n.
Oh, let Thy love be manifested,
Work in me longing uncontested
To proffer Thee pure love in turn,
My heart and senses wholly winning,
That henceforth, all my own beginning
I in Thy love and praise discern.

10 I long to live for Thee, Lord, only,
My Master and my Bridegroom still,
Whate’er refuse to own Thee wholly,
Whate’er is counter to Thy will,
Rebuke it in my conscience quickly;
Let blood and water flood me thickly,
And all impurity remove,
Make my great wish Thy adoration,
And all Thy lowly flock’s salvation
In one pure Spirit, faith, and love.

11 Thus praising, loving, in the stillness,
I childlike rest upon Thy knee;
The Sheep are sated from Thy fullness,
The Bride from every care is free;
Her only care in life is wholly
To please Thyself, her Bridegroom, solely;
She decks herself and waits for Thee.
Far, far from hence, oh, draw me sweetly!
What Thou art not dissolve completely,
Pure Radiance of eternity!

GERMAN

O Vaterherz, o Licht, o Leben,
o treuer Hirt, Immanuel!
Dir bin ich einmal übergeben;
dir, dir gehöret meine Seel.
Ich will mich nicht mehr selber führen;
der Vater soll das Kind regieren;
so geh nun mit mir aus und ein,
und leite mich nach allen Tritten;
ich geh,(ach hör, o Herr, mein Bitten!)
für mich nicht einen Schritt allein.

2 Was kann dein schwaches Kind vollbringen?
Ich weiß mir gar in keinem Rath;
drum sei in groß und kleinen Dingen
mir immer selber Rath und That.
Du willst dich meiner gar nicht schämen:
ich mag dich ja zu Allem nehmen;
du willst mir selber Alles sein:
so sollst du denn in allen Sachen
den Anfang und das Ende machen;
dann stellt sich lauter Segen ein.

3 Du leitest mich, ich kann nicht gleiten,
dein Wort muß ewig feste stehn:
du sprichst, dein Auge soll mich leiten;
dein Angesicht soll vor mir gehn;
ja deine Güte und Erbarmen
soll mich umfangen und unarmen.
O daß ich nur recht kindlich sei,
bei allem gläubig zu dir flehe
und stets auf deinen Wink nur sehe,
so spür ich täglich neue Treu.

4 O daß ich auch in Kleinsten merke
auf deine Weisheit, Güt und Treu,
damit ich mich im Glauben stärke,
dich lieb und lob und ruhig sei,
und deine Weisheit lasse walten,
stets Orbnung, Maaß und Ziel zu halten;
denn lauf ich vor, da lauf ich an.
Drum mach im Besten mich gelassen,
nichts ohne dich mir anzumaßen:
was du mir thust, ist wohlgethan.

[5 Due weißt allein die besten Weiden,
auch das, was an mir Schaden übt,
drum laß dein Schäflein alles meiden,
was ihm nicht gute Nahrung gibt.
Ach, daß ich nicht mehr von dir irre,
noch zur Zerstreuung mich verliere,
auch nicht im allerbesten Schein!
Ach, halte meine Seele feste,
hab acht auf mich aufs allerbeste,
und halte der Versuchung ein.

6 Du wollst ohn Unterlaß mich treiben
zum Wachen, Ringen, Flehn und Schrein.
Laß mir dein Wort im Herzen bleiben,
und in mir Geist und Leben sein;
laß deinen Zuruf stets erschallen,
mit Furcht, und als vor dir zu wallen,
laß mich stets eingekehret sein:
vermehr in mir dein innres Leben,
dir unaufhörlich Frucht zu geben,
und laß nichts lau noch träges ein.

7 O daß ich mich in nichts verweilte,
was mir hat Zeit und Kraft verzehrt!
O daß ich stets zum Himmel eilte!
Mein Held, umgürte du dein Schwert,
und brich durch alle Hindernisse,
ja, laß nach deinem Wort die Füße
hinfort gewisse Tritte thun,
laß mich in allen Wort und Werken,
auf deines Geistes Trieb nur merken,
und nicht im eignen Willen mein.]

8 Ach! mach einmal mich treu und stille,
daß ich dir immer folgen kann.
Nur dein, nur dein vollkommner Wille
sei hier mein Schranken, Lauf und Bahn.
Laß mich nichts mehr für mich verlangen,
ja laß mir nichts am Herzen hangen,
als deines heilgen Namens Ruhm;
der sei allein mein Ziel auf Erden:
ach! laß mir's nie verrücket werden;
denn ich bin ja dein Eingenthum.

9 Laß mich in dir den Vater preisen,
wie er die Liebe selber ist;
laß deinen Geist mir klärlich weisen,
wir du von ihm geschenkt mir bist.
Ach, offenbare deine Liebe
und wirke doch die heißen Triebe
der reinen Gegenlieb in mir;
durchbringe dadurch Herz und Sinnen,
daß ich hinfort mein ganz Beginnen
in deiner Lieb und Lob nur spür.

10 Ich sehne mich, nur dir zu leben,
der du mein Herr und Bräutigam bist.
Was dir sich nicht will ganz ergeben,
und was nicht deines Willens ist,
das strafe bald in dem Gewissen;

die Braut steht aller Sorgen bloß;
sie sorget nur allein in allen
dir, ihrem Bräut'gam zu gefallen:
sie schmückt und hält sich dir bereit.
Ach zeuch mich, zeuch mich weit von hinnen;
was du nicht bist, laß ganz zerrinnen,
o reiner Glanz der Ewigkeit.

O höchster und gerechter Gott

Here is my translation of the Confirmation hymn “O höchster und gerechter Gott” (Anon., bef. 1759?), appearing in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #290, plus the five stanzas (4, 5, 6, 7, 11) omitted from that cento. The hymn emphasizes an Enlightenment view and form of Confirmation with its heightened solemnity; the repeated prayer for “strengthening” echoes one sense of the word Confirmation itself. In Christian Friedrich Voß’s Auserlesene Lieder vors Herz gesamlet (Sommerfeld/Pf., 1759), it appears with special rubrics indicating who is to sing which stanzas. There it is titled: “At the Confirmation of Children” and is assigned the melody “Nun freut euch lieben Christen gmein.” I restore this version, indicating with square brackets the stanzas omitted by the Wisc. Hymnal. The melody in that hymnal is “Mein Herzens Jesu, [meine Lust],” which is now most often associated with “Du Lebensbrot, Herr Jesu Christ.”

(The children sing alone.)

O RIGHTEOUS God Most High, give heed,
O gracious Father, hear us!
Weighed down, we come in time of need,
To Thee, for grace to cheer us.
We seek, O Lord, Thy countenance;
Cast not Thy needy children hence!
Oh, let us find Thy favor!

2 In Christ from all eternity
Thy love abounded to us,
And this affection finally
To love of Thee then drew us;
Thy Son for us did dearly pay,
And we, on our Baptism day,
Were as Thy children welcomed.

3 Alas, Thou knowest all too well
How faithlessly we acted,
How we in carnal lust did dwell,
By vanities distracted!
How little was our love to Thee!
How oft by our iniquity
Did we, alas, aggrieve Thee!

[4 Now is our guilty record plain,
Our heart cries hell eternal!
Thy Word on us speaks curse and pain,
And threatens flames infernal;
Alas, the flooding of Thy wrath,
And zeal that burns all in its path,
Now o’er our soul is hanging.

5 Oh, who will help us in our trial?
Who from the curse deliver?
Who will with God us reconcile?
Who chains of death will sever?
Who will reform our wicked heart?
And healing to our soul impart,
And to our wounded conscience?

6 Lord Christ, we sinners look to Thee!
Thou only hast salvation!
Oh, save us from th’ atrocity
Of sin’s accumulation!
O faithful Shepherd, be our stay,
For we, Thy sheep, have gone astray:
Wilt Thou leave us to perish?

7 Oh nay! Thou neither canst nor wilt,
For Thou wast slaughtered for us.
Shall Thy heart fail to break, which spilt,
For our sake, blood most glorious?
Thy heart with longing breaks in Thee,
And calls to us: Come unto Me!
I will Myself refresh you.]

8 Thus, Lord, we fall before Thy face
To beg a gracious sentence;
Unbar to us the door of grace
Receive our true repentance:
And take our heart and make it Thine,
Our spirit, mind, and sense refine,
And give our soul Thy healing.

9 Here is our heart and mouth and hand—
Let them preserve forever
The covenant of love unstained,
Renewed here by Thy favor.
Away vile passions, earthly bliss,
This heart to Jesus hallowed is,
And e’er devoted to Him.

10 God, Holy Spirit, let Thy pow’r,
Which in good works acts ever
To will and do, make us this hour
Strong for this high endeavor;
To our faint weakness add Thy force,
And keep us in our daily course
To Jesus always faithful.

[11 Belovèd parents, sigh and pray
That God the strength would lend us;
And others who attend today,
That naught from faith would bend us;
Yea, come, the cov’nant join ye now,
With heart and mouth yourselves to vow
To Christ your loyal service.]

(The whole congregation sings.)

12 Lord Jesus Christ, Thou Shepherd dear,
Thou balm of sinners lowly,
Watch over these Thy children here
Who bear Thy title holy!
Receive their cries in love divine,
Oh, take them up, for they are Thine,
Sheep of the flock Thou tendest.

13 Inflame and sanctify their mind
By Thy all-gracious Spirit,
And show them by Thy mercy kind
The path of truth and merit;
Let them not stay to either hand,
Nor in the sinner’s counsel stand!
Their faith, O Savior, strengthen!

14 Yet grant us oft of grace and love
Clear, comforting expressions,
And judge us not as we deserve;
Forgive us our transgressions!
Our treachery is great and sore,
We wretched are, bereft and poor,
Yet Thou art full of mercy.

15 We come as one united whole,
Each one a sorry debtor,
To Thee, kind Lover of the soul,
And pledge our faith to better!
Oh, help us by Thy heav’nly might,
And let us always boldly fight,
Till death good warfare waging.

GERMAN
(Die Kinder singen allein.)

O höchster und gerechter Gott,
du Vater aller Gnaden,
wir kommen jetzt in unsrer Noth,
mühselig und beladen,
wir suchen, Herr, dein Angesicht,
verwirf uns arme Kinder nicht,
ach las uns Gnade finden.

2 Du warst uns zwar von Ewigkeit
in Christo schon gewogen,
und deine Huld hat in der Zeit
uns auch zu dir gezogen:
dein Sohn hat uns gar theur erkauft
und du hast uns, da wir getauft,
zu Kindern angenommen.

3 Ach aber dir ist auch bewußt,
wie treulos wir gehandelt,
und wie wir nach des Fleisches Lust
in Eitelkeit gewandelt!
Wie schlecht bist du von uns geliebt!
Wie oft, ach leider! oft betrübt
durch unsre viele Sünden!

[4 Jetzt zeigt sich unser Schuldenbuch,
Das Herz will uns verdammen;
Dein Wort spricht über uns den Fluch,
Und droht mit Höllenflammen;
Ach jetzt will deines Zornes Fluth
Und deines Feuereifers Gluth
Auf unsre Seele dringen.

5 Wer rettet uns in dieser Noth?
Wer schützt vor Fluch und Sterben?
Wer söhnt uns aus mit unserm Gott?
Wer hilft uns vom verderben?
Wer ändert unser böses Herz?
Wer heilet unsern Seelenschmerz
Und des Gewissens Wunden?

6 Herr Jesu, aller Sünder Heil,
Du kanst allein uns rathen;

in reiner Treue halten.
Weg Fleischeslust, weg Eitelkeit!
Das Hez bleibt jesu nur geweiht,
und ewig ihm ergeben.

10 Gott, heilger Geist, laß deine Kraft,
die in den guten Werken
das Wollen und Vollbringen schafft,
zu diesem Zweck uns stärken!
Hilf unsrer blöden Schwachheit auf,
und laß in unserm ganzen Lauf
uns Jesu treu verbleiben!

[11 Ach lieben Eltern, seufzt und schreit, [Ach liebsten Freunde…]
Daß Gott uns Kraft verleihe;

auf deiner Wahrheit Pfade;
laß ihrer keines irre gehn
nach in dem Rath der Sünder stehn,
Herr, stärke sie im Glauben!

14 Doch schenke uns auch deine Huld,
laß uns auch Gnade finden!
ach, richt uns nicht nach unsrer Schuld,
vergieb uns unsre Sünden!
Zwar unsre Untreu ist sehr groß,
wir sind voll Elend, nacht und bloß;
doch du bist voll Erbarmen.

15 Wir alle kommen jetzt vereint
in wahrer Buß und Reue,
zu dir, holdselger Seelenfreund,
und schwören bessre Treue!
Ach, hilf du uns durch deine Kraft
und laß uns güte Ritterschaft
bis an das Ende üben!
