Weg, Welt-Getümmel

 Here is my translation of the Pentecost hymn, “Weg, Welt-Getümmel” (B. Schmolck, 1712) from the author’s Der lustige Sabbath, part 1, for the third Day of Pentecost, i.e., Tuesday of Whitsun Week, on the Gospel of John 10:1–10, with title “The Door to the Church and to Heaven.”

Mel.: Preiset nun alle.

HENCE, earthly pleasure,
Tempting my soul to hell!
Heav’n is my treasure,
There shall all things be well.
What way to that blest land attaineth?
Jesus my Way, Truth, and Life remaineth! (x2)

2 What doth our Lord say?
Verily, verily!
He is the Doorway,
To blest eternity.
Shall I not trust Him who all gaineth?
Jesus my Way, Truth, and Life remaineth!
(x2)

3 Door of Life, heed me,
Entry do not withhold!
Bid Thy man lead me
Into the blessed fold,
Where of no wolf the soul complaineth;
Jesus, my Way, Truth, and Life remaineth!
(x2)

4 Through Thee, dear Savior,
Thou mak’st Thy sheep to move;
Let shepherds never
Murd’rers and robbers prove.
Fill them with love that never waneth.
Jesus, my Way, Truth, and Life remaineth!
(x2)

5 No voice of stranger
Will Thy true sheep obey,
But sensing danger
Wisely they flee away
From lies that kill and sin that staineth.
Jesus, my Way, Truth, and Life remaineth!
(x2)

6 From thieves that hurt us
Make Thou the fold secure;
Guards who alert us
Of grace and peace assure,
To lead the way that blessing gaineth.
Jesus, my Way, Truth, and Life remaineth!
(x2)

7 As they precede us
Let us obedient go;
Thy Word will lead us
And heaven’s portal show.
He errs who ‘gainst that Word here straineth.
Jesus, my Way, Truth, and Life remaineth!
(x2)

8 By names address us
Which are in heaven writ;
Thy Word shall bless us
Who here would follow it.
Good pasture give where nothing paineth.
Jesus, my Way, Truth, and Life remaineth!
(x2)

9 As Thou, dear Savior
The church’s Doorway art,
Finish whatever
Yet faileth in my heart.
By Thee the soul her Zion gaineth.
Jesus, my Way, Truth, and Life remaineth!
(x2)

Ich hab von ferne

Here is my translation of the “heaven” hymn, “Ich hab von ferne” (Johann Timotheus Hermes, d. 1821), Ev.-luth. Gsb #636, first apearing in the author’s Sophiens Reise von Memel nach Sachsen (1770) titled “Foretaste of heaven.” A melody is provided by J. A. Hiller in Lieder und Arien aus Sophiens Reise (1779). J. P. Lange calls the hymn “remarkable in its simplicity, brevity, and depth of lyrical tone.” It is certainly of its time. The melody generally appointed now is that which first gave the meter, “Nun preiset alle.” Another translation evidently exists, beginning “Though from a distance,” but seems to be generally unavailable.

SINCE I’ve glimpsed faintly,
Maker, Thy palace fair,
With longing saintly
I would my heart prepare,
And with desire to Thee surrender
This weary life, mighty Lord of splendor. (x2)

2 Splendid those towers
Here in the Spirit seen!
Thou hast all powers;
Beauteous Thy radiant sheen.
Oh, that upon these thrones bright-shining,
I were today and fore’er reclining! (x2)

3 Sinful I own me,
To earth yet bending low—
Well was this shown me
By Thy good Spirit’s glow.
Not yet am I made pure and lighted,
Not yet entirely with Thee united. (x2)

4 Yet my heart’s steady,
No ban can shake my bliss;
I’m blest already,
Since I’ve discovered this!
Still I will count my woes as training,
And love Thee well all my days remaining. (x2)

5 Yet it is cheering,
I’ve spied that City High;
And, never wearying,
I would draw ever nigh,
And to that end my heart embolden,
Till I shall wander those pathways golden. (x2)

GERMAN

Ich hab von ferne,
Herr, deine Thron erblickt
und hätte gerne
mein Herz vorausgeschickt,
und hätte gern mein müdes Leben,
Schöpfer der Geister, dir hingegeben.

2 Das war so prächtig,
was ich im Geist gesehn!
du bist allmächtig;
drum ist dein Licht so schön.
Könnt ich an diesen Hellen Thronen
doch schon von heute an ewig wohnen!

3 Nur ich bin sündig,
der Erde noch geneigt;
das hat mir bündig
dein heilger Geist gezeigt.
Ich bin noch nicht genug gereinigt,
noch nicht ganz innig mit dir vereinigt.

4 Doch bin ich fröhlich,
daß mich kein Bann erschreckt;
ich bin schon selig,
seitdem ich das entdeckt.
Ich will mich noch im Leiden üben
und dich zeitlebens inbrünstig lieben.

5 Ich bin zufrieden,
daß ich die Stadt gesehn,
und ohn Ermüden
will ich ihr näher gehn
und ihre hellen goldnen Gassen
lebenslang nicht aus den Augen lassen.

Du Trost der Armen

Here is my translation of the Jesus hymn “Du Trost der Armen” (Ehrenfried Liebich, d. 1780), Ev.-Luth. Gsb #432, first appearing in the author’s Geistliche Lieder und Oden (1768). Liebich is of the Enlightenment school influenced by Gellert, who had a similarly named hymn collection. Somewhat in imitation of the Moravian school, the language is elegant simplicity, the devotion is fervent, the theology is minimal if inoffensive: this is the Enlightenment’s ideal, which still has not really been overcome. The appointed melody is “Nun preiset alle Gottes Barmherzigkeit.”

HOPE of the lowly,
Most gracious Friend to me,
Lamb of God holy,
Dear Bridegroom heavenly:
Thou fairest Treasure o’er all treasures
Thou art my source of eternal pleasures. (x2)

2 To know and claim Thee
Is my true blessedness;
When I but name Thee,
Joy doth my soul possess;
O Jesus, when my heart beholds Thee
Holy delight in Thy grace enfolds me. (x2)

3 Even in saddest
Sorrows conferred by Thee,
My heart is gladdest,
Knowing Thou joinest me.
How sweet the cross’s bitter savor,
Since I enjoy my dear Jesus’ favor! (x2)

4 My consolation
Thou art continually,
Grace and salvation
Flow from Thy wounds to me;
Thou clear’st all debts by blood outpouring,
By Thy afflictions all good restoring. (x2)

5 In faithful fashion
Thou seekest sinners’ weal,
In Thy compassion
Diest, my death to steal;
My curse upon the cross hast nailèd,
Satan the mighty one’s pow’r curtailèd. (x2)

6 Jesus is risen;
O sin and death, depart!
Foes bound in prison
Cannot distress my heart.
Hell, shut thy jaws! Thou canst not have me;
Jesus can, Jesus will surely save me. (x2)

7 Chosen and holy,
Christ, the beloved Son,
Firstborn, doth solely
Ascend the Father’s throne,
His children keeping safe and blessing,
Praying for sinners His name confessing (x2)

8 My faith sees clearly
My Shepherd true, how He
From the grave dreary
Shall someday waken me.
Though ye, my limbs, must break asunder,
Christ will remake you more glorious yonder. (x2)

9 Him whom I’ve loved here,
There in the light I’ll see;
What joy removed here,
There shall not silence me.
I’ll praise my Jesus for increasing,
Joy to the full and new life unceasing. (x2)

10 Sing, heavn’ly spirits,
Of the Lord’s faithfulness,
Sing of His merits,
In song His grace express!
Arise, my soul, on earth endeavor
Rightly to love the most gracious Savior. (x2)

GERMAN
Du Trost der Armen,
heiliges Gotteslamm,
Freund voll Erbarmen,
himmlischer Bräutigam,
du schönster Schatz von allen Schätzen!
ewiglich sollst du mein Herz ergötzen!

2 Daß ich dich kenne,
ist meine Seligkeit;
wenn ich dich nenne,
wird meine Seel erfreut;
wenn, Jesu, dich mein Herz erblicket,
werd ich von heiliger Lust entzücket.

3 Auch bei dem Leide,
was du mir auferlegst,
merk ich zur Freude,
das du es mit mir trägst;
der bittre Kreuzkelch wird mir süße,
weil ich des Freundlichsten Huld genieße.

4 Zu allen Stunden
bleibst du mein Trost und Theil,
aus deinen Wunde
fließet mir Gnad und Heil;
du tilgst die Schuld mit deinem Blute,
leidend erwarbst du uns alles Gute.

5 Mit treuen Triebe
suchst du des Sünders Wohl,
du starbst aus Liebe
daß ich nicht sterben soll;
mein Fluch ward an dein Kreuz geheftet
Satan, der Mächtige, liegt entkräftet.

6 Mit meinem Freunde
trotz ich euch, Sünd und Tod!
bezwungne Feinde
machen mir keine Noth;
schleuß, Hölle, deinen weiten Rachen:
Jesus will, Jesus kann selig machen.

7 Der auserkorne,
brünstig geliebte Sohn,
der Erstgeborne
steigt auf des Vater Thron;
er schützt und segnet seine Kinder,
bittend vertritt er die armen Sünder.

8 Es sieht meine Glaube
wie mein getreuer Hirt
mich as dem Staube
herrlich erwecken wird:
verweset immer, meine Glieder,
Christi Huld giebt euch mir schöner wieder.

9 Den ich hier liebte,
den seh ich einst im Licht,
was hier betrübte
stört dort mein Loblied nicht:
dort wird mein Jesus Alles geben
Freude die Fülle, und liebliches Leben.

10 Ihr Engelchöre!
singet von Jesu Treu,
singt ihm zur Ehre,
daß er der schönste sei;
auf, meine Seele! such auf Erden,
dem Vielgeliebten recht lieb zu werden.
