Ich danke dir für deinen Tod

My next new hymn translation for Lochner’s Passion-book was the Passion hymn “Ich danke dir für deinen Tod” (J. Scheffler, 1657), of which all three stanzas are included in Devotion 57 (“Jesus Dies — Seventh Word”). I give the text here along with the German from the author’s Heilige Seelen-Lust (1657), where it is titled “It [the soul] thanks the Lord Jesus for His death,” and the special melody (and bass) provided there.

Mel.: Ich danke dir für deinen Tod

Mel.: Es ist gewisslich an der Zeit

I THANK Thee for Thy death endured,
  Lord Jesus, and adore Thee
For all Thy pains of heart conferred
  By those who beat and tore Thee!
Grant that the merits of that pain
May for my soul refreshment gain
  When death my eyelids closeth.

I thank Thee for Thy loving grace
  Which Thou to me displayest
When Thou dost bow Thy holy face
  And all my debt repayest;
Incline to me, my God, as well
When I am faced with death and hell,
  That I Thy grace may savor.

My soul let in Thy favor go
  From all its griefs here tasted,
That of Thy precious, costly woe
  Naught may on me be wasted.
Receive my soul to heaven’s heart,
Where Thou, its dearest Jesus, art,
  And let me live forever.

GERMAN
Ich danke dir für deinen Tod,
Herr Jesu, und die Schmerzen,
die du in deiner letzten Noth
empfundst in deinem Herzen:
Laß die Verdienste solcher Pein
ein Labsal meiner Seelen sein,
wenn mir die Augen brechen.

2 Ich danke dir für deine Huld,
die du mir hast erzeiget,
da du mit Zahlung meiner Schuld
dein Haupt zu mir geneiget:
Ach neig dich auch zu mir, mein Gott,
wenn ich gerath in Todesnoth,
daß ich Genade spüre.

3 Laß meine Seel in deiner Gunst
aus ihrem Leide scheiden,
auf daß an mir nicht sei umsunst
dein theuerwerthes Leiden:
Nimm sie hinauf zur selben Frist,
wo du ihr liebster Jesus bist,
und laß mich ewig leben.

Nun nimm mein Herz und alles was ich bin

Here is my revision, composite, or partial re-translation of Miss Winkworth’s translation of the hymn, “Nun nimm mein Herz und alles was ich bin” (Johann Scheffler, d. 1677), in GGELB #382, first in the author’s Heilige Seelen-Lust (1657) with title “She [the soul] gives herself  to her Bridegroom.” F. W. Foster first gave the first and last stanzas English rendering in the Moravian hymnal. Winkworth’s complete translation was mostly deficient in the last two lines, which in stanzas 1–3 ended in iambs rather than trochees. I include the proper melody as it appears in the original publication. Besides the original “based on a familiar melody,” Zahn gives one from Freylinghausen 1714, which I include first:

NOW take my heart and all that is in me,
My dearest Jesus, from myself to Thee;
I would have Thine
This soul and flesh of mine,
Each word and thought and action
Bend to Thy satisfaction.

2 Thou givest me to drink of milk and wine,
Thou pour’st in me the Fount of life divine;
O Image fair,
So sweet beyond compare!
Let me seek ever solely
Myself to give Thee wholly.

3 Behold, through all th’ eternal ages, still
My heart shall choose and love Thy holy will;
Wouldst Thou my death,
My God, I’ll die in faith;
Wouldst Thou that I keep living,
I’ll live with due thanksgiving.

4 But Thou must also deign to be my own,
To dwell in me, to make my heart Thy throne,
My God indeed,
My Help in time of need—
My Head, let naught Thee sever— [One in Thy body make me,]
My Bridegroom be forever! [My Bridegroom, ne’er forsake me!]

C. Winkworth, 1858, alt. (st. 2, lines 1–2 alt.; st. 3, line 4, alt.; st. 4, lines 5–6 alt.)
Translation st. 1, lines 2, 5–6; st. 2, lines 3–6; st. 3, lines 5–6 © 2024 Matthew Carver.

WINKWORTH 1858
Now take my heart and all that is in me,
My Lord beloved, take it from me to Thee;
I would have Thine
This soul and flesh of mine
Would order thought and word and deed
As Thy most holy will shall lead.

2 Thou feedest me with heavenly bread and wine,
Thou pourest through me streams of life divine;
Oh noble Face,
So sweet, so full of grace,
I ponder as Thy cross I see,
How best to give myself to Thee.

3 Behold, through all the eternal ages, still
My heart shall choose and love Thy holy will;
Wouldst Thou my death,
I die to Thee in faith;
Wouldst Thou that I should longer live,
To Thee the choice I wholly give.

4 But Thou must also deign to be my own,
To dwell in me, to make my heart Thy throne,
My God indeed,
My Help in time of need,
My Head from whom no power can sever,
The Bridegroom of my soul for ever!

FOSTER 1789
O take my heart, and whatsoe’er is mine,
Beloved Jesus, I’ll be only Thine;
To Thee I’ll live,
And soul and body give;
My words and whole behavior
Be ruled by Thee forever.

4 But give Thyself, my Jesus, unto me,
And dwell within my heart continually:
O Lord, remain
My joy ‘midst grief and pain;
From Thee, my soul’s belovèd,
May I ne’er be removèd.

GERMAN
Nu nimm mein Hertz und alles, was ich bin,
von mir zu dir, mein liebster Jesu, hin.
Ich will nun dein
mit Leib und Seele sein;
mein Reden, Thun, und Tichten
nach deinem Willen richten.

2 Du tränkest mich mit lauter Milch und Wein;
du schenkest mir den Brunn des Lebens ein.
o edles Bild,
du bist so süß und mild,
daß ich stets drauf gedenke,
wie ich mich dir ganz schenke.

3 Drum schau, ich will in Ewigkeit
dein Wohlgefalln zu lieben sein bereit;
willt du mich todt,
so sterb ich gern, mein Gott;
willt du, daß ich soll leben,
will ich mich drein ergeben.

4 Du aber sollst auch wieder meine sein,
und ganz und gar kommn in mein Herz hinein; [gar gehn]
sollst sein mein Gott
und Trost in aller Noth,
sollst mich dir einverleiben,
und ewger Bräutgam bleiben. [ewig]

Herzallerliebster Gott

Here is my translation of the Christian life hymn, “Herzallerliebster Gott” (? David Denicke, d. 1680), in NEGB #199 with melody assignment “O Gott, du frommer Gott” and omitting stanzas 5-6, originally appearing in the Lüneburg Gsb 1661, thence into other Northern hymnals, finally Freylinghausen 1714. The cipher “I.A.” (incertus autor, uncertain author) early on led to later, false ascription to Iohannes Angelus (Scheffler), whose work it is not.

G
OD, dearest to my heart!
Who madest earth and heaven,
Life, body, soul and mind,
By grace to me hast given!
Now, to direct my heart,
Thy goodly Spirit send,
That in all that I do,
He strength and help may lend.

2 Help me to shun and flee
The flesh’s passions ever,
And make the Spirit’s work
Instead my chief endeavor;
To wage the warfare good
Grant me until the last,
And ground me in Thy hope
Forever firm and fast.

3 Grant that I may, like Christ,
A very Christian prove me,
And listen well and heed
How He would teach and move me;
In faith, oh, strengthen me,
To follow undeterred,
Whene’er the wicked world
Would turn me from Thy Word!

4 Lord, kindle Thou mine heart
With love’s true ardor glowing,
And let this love from Thee
To neighbors be outflowing;
Give me forbearance too
When sorrows on me break,
And help me in success
The humble path to take.

*5 Let me be ever for
Thy kingdom here contending,
That so its blessing may
Upon me be descending:
Who doth th’ eternal seek
First and unswervingly,
To him the temp’ral good
Shall also added be.

*6 Let hate and arrogance,
Hypocrisy and lying
Be never found in me;
From these may I be flying;
Let guile and greed and wrong.
And heartless, cruel ways
Be far from me, O God,
Throughout my earthly days.

7 Lord, lead me with Thy hand,
Forever rightly guiding,
And keep me night and day,
Lest e’er my step be sliding:
Be Thou my Castle strong,
My Shelter in distress,
When I go out or in,
My due vocation bless.

8 Deliver me at last
From every cause of grieving,
And when some day I shall
This worldly life be leaving,
Be near and help Thou me
With grace’s mighty hand,
And lead me on and up
To my true fatherland.

GERMAN
Herzallerliebster Gott!
der du mir dieses Leben,
Leib, Seele und Vernunft,
aus Gnaden hast gegeben,
regiere doch mein Herz
durch deinen guten Geist,
daß er in allem Thun
mir kraft und Beistand leist.

2 Hilf, daß ich allzeit
des Fleisches Lüste weide,
hingegen, emsiglich
des Geistes Werke treibe,
und gute Ritterschaft
ausübe, auch dabei
in Hoffnung immer stark
und fest gegründet sei.

3 Gieb, daß ich als ein Christ,
wie Christus, mich bezeige,
und meine Ohren stets
zu seiner Lehre neige.
Im Glauben stärke mich,
daß ich der argen Welt
nicht folge, wenn sie mich
von deinem Wort abhält.

4 Entzünde du mein Herz,
mit deiner wahren Liebe,
und gieb, daß ich zugleich
am Nächsten Liebe übe.
Verleihe mir Geduld,
wenn Trübsal bricht herein,
und hilf, daß ich im Glück
demüthig möge sein.

5 Verleihe, daß ich stets
nach deinem Reiche ringe,
auf daß sein Segen stets
zu mir herunter dringe:
wer nach dem Ewigen
vor allen Dingen tracht,
der wird auch wohl mit dem
was zeitlich ist, bedacht.

6 Haß, Falschheit, Übermuth,
und Heuchelei darneben
laß ja an mir nicht sein,
in meinem ganzen Leben:
List, Unrecht, Frevel, Geiz
und Unbarmherzigkeit
sei ferne weg von mir
o Gott! zu aller Zeit.

7 Mit deiner rechten Hand,
Herr, wollest du mich leiten,
und schützen Tag und Nacht,
daß meine Tritt nicht gleiten:
du wollest meine Burg
und Schutz in Nöthen sein,
wenn ich in meinem Amt
ausgehe oder ein.

8 Zuletzt erlöse mich
von allem Kreuz und Leiden,
und wenn ich soll einmal
von dieser Welt abscheiden,
so stehe du mir bei
mit deiner Gnadenhand,
und führe mich hinauf
ins rechte Vaterland.

Komm heilger Geist, Du höchstes Gut

Here is my translation of the Pentecost hymn, “Komm heilger Geist, Du höchstes Gut” (Johann Scheffler, d. 1677), in ELGB #180, according to Fischer originally appearing in seven stanzas set to “Vater unser,” in Kleiner Knabe großer Gott III (1657). However, the earliest form I find has ten stanzas, while later versions omit sts. 3, 8, and 9, as well as betray several alterations. I find the full text in Johann Jacob Schütz’s Gedenkbüchlein (Nuremberg, 1675), p. 238ff., with title “Of the gifts and operations of the Holy Ghost” without indication of melody. The Lunenberg Gsb 1700, p. 376, gives it in its revised, seven-stanza form with a proper melody, ascribing to “Anonymus.” The title in Helleleuchtender Hertzens-Spiegel (1705) is “Heart-sighs for power from on high and the Gift of the Holy Ghost.” No melody is given. The proper melody is given in Freylinghausen 1730, p. 219. Wetzel, Hymnop. I, p. 59, includes it among Scheffler’s hymns as well. I give the two proper melodies from Zahn. Given the 7-stanza form in the Buffalo Synod hymnal, we may assume that the later, repeating melody was intended.

COME, Holy Ghost, Thou highest Good,
Inflame my heart, Thy sacred wood,
Sweet torrents of Thy fire unending
With mighty pow’r upon me sending;
Stir up with favor from above
The burning of Thy boundless Love.

2 Enlighten me, true heav’nly Light
That I grope not in dark of night!
Yea, with Thy coolness overshade me,
Lest foreign fever should invade me.
The meadow of my heart renew
With Thine own holy Godhead’s dew.

*3 Come, precious Unction, set aright
Sin’s venom and the serpent’s bite!
Thou priceless Balm and all-availaing,
Refresh my soul now faint and failing.
Come, Thou my spirit’s paradise,
Come, heav’nly Banquet, living Prize!

4 Come, come Thou sweetest Hope and Stay,
And I am rid of sin’s decay!
Come, come, of all good gifts the Giver!
Without whom naught can please ever!
Fill in my heart Thy sacred shrine
With Thine own spotless Godhead’s wine.

5 Grant me as God’s dear child to be,
My God to fear and sin to flee!
Thy sanctifying pow’r provide me,
And with Thy light of wisdom guide me.
Direct me on the saving way,
That I may never stop nor stray.

6 Give me the strength that so I may
Serve as Thy soldier every day;
Thy counsel train my senses brightly,
Empow’r them to discern things rightly!
Grant understanding heavenly,
That Thy will may be known to me.

7 Pour into me from heav’n above
Sweet blessings by Thy kiss of Love;
Thy goodness let me know more clearly
Thy sweetness hold more dearly;
At every hour a glimpse impart
Of Truth, as Truth itself Thou art.

*8 Thou Gift of graces sevenfold,
God’s Finger, wondrous to behold,
Thou Might supreme, Thou Fountain living,
Come, as a River, comfort giving,
Baptismal Fire and Pledge of God!
Without Thee all is cheat and fraud.

*9 O Stream of Life, as crystal clear,
Who dost Thy heav’nly Salem cheer
All things with floods of grace imbuing,
All creatures with Thy Life renewing:
Who knows Thee now knows naught of dread,
Who lacks Thee, e’en alive, is dead.

10 O Jesus, this dear Guest by Thee
In full degree was promised me;
Then let my soul be now His dwelling,
With light my darkness all dispelling;
So pour Him out abundantly
And let Him ever be with me. [Then I am baptized pefectly.]

Nun danket Gott ihr Christen all

Here is my translation of the Easter hymn, “Nun danket Gott ihr Christen all” (Johann Scheffler, AKA Angelus Silesius, d. 1667), ELGB #146, first appearing in the author’s Heilige Seelen-Lust (1657) titled “66. [The soul] recounts the glory of His resurrection.” The appointed melody is “Vater unser im Himmelreich.”

NOW thank your God, ye Christians all,
With joyful noises fill His hall,
Who hath His godly might made known
Through Jesus Christ, His conqu’ring Son.
Sing “Triumph! Triumph!,” high and low,
For Jesus hath o’ercome the foe.

2 From death to life He paved a road,—
The Prince of Life, the one true God—
The devil’s fortress laying waste,
God’s heav’nly kingdom He increased.
Sing “Triumph! Triumph!,” high and low,
For Jesus hath o’ercome the foe.

3 He flashed like lightning into sight,
And fooled the foe’s deceit and spite;
He proved in pow’r and action bold
What He before had plainly told.
Sing “Triumph! Triumph!,” high and low,
For Jesus hath o’ercome the foe.

4 He overcame victoriously
His suff’rings, grief, and agony:
His head now bears with splendid sheen
The laurel wreath forever green.
Sing “Triumph! Triumph!,” high and low,
For Jesus hath o’ercome the foe.

5 The wounds with which He was regaled
When on the cross His limbs were nailed
Shine brightly as the morning-star
And send their beams both near and far.
Sing “Triumph! Triumph!,” high and low,
For Jesus hath o’ercome the foe.

6 Now filled with blessing, pow’r, and grace,
He reigneth o’er all time and place,
With joy inhabits in paradise,
Is pleased to hear our worship-cries.
Sing “Triumph! Triumph!,” high and low,
For Jesus hath o’ercome the foe.

7 Now thank your God, ye Christians all,
With joyful noises fill His hall;
In Him ye too shall rise again
And everlasting joy obtain.
Wherefore sing “Triumph!,” high and low,
For Jesus hath o’ercome the foe.

GERMAN
Nun danket Gott ihr Christen all,
und jauchzet Ihm mit großem Schall,
dieweil Er seiner Gottheit Macht
durch seinen Sohn an Tag gebracht.
Triumph, Triumph schrei alle Welt,
denn Jesus hat den Feind gefällt.

2 Er ist erstanden von den Tod,
der Lebens-Fürst, der wahre Gott.
Er hat des Teufels Burg zerstört,
und Gottes Himmelreich vermehrt.
Triumph, Triumph schrei alle Welt,
denn Jesus hat den Feind gefällt.

3 Er ist erschienen wie ein Blitz,
und hat bethört der Feinde Witz;
Er hat erwiesen mit der that,
was Er zuvor verkündigt hat.
Triumph, Triumph schrei alle Welt,
denn Jesus hat den Feind gefällt.

4 Er hat nun überwunden gar
sein Leiden, Trübsal und Gefahr:
Sein Haupt tragt schon mit großem Glanz
den ewig grünen Lorbeer-Cranz.
Triumph, Triumph schrei alle Welt,
denn Jesus hat den Feind gefällt.

5 Die Wunden die Er hier empfing,
da Er an's Creuz genagelt hing,

7 Drum danket Gott ihr christen all,
und jauchzet Ihm mit großem Schall,
ihr sollt in Ihm auch auferstehn
und in die ew'ge Freude gehn.
Drum schrei Triumph die ganze Welt,
denn Jesus hat den Feind gefällt.

O treu(st)er Jesu, der du bist

Here is my translation of the death and burial hymn, “O treu(st)er Jesu, der du bist” (Johann Scheffler, d. 1677), Ev.-luth. Gsb #676, appearing first in the author’s Heilige Seelen-Lust (Breslau, 1657) with title: “The 61st. It Implores Him for a Blessed End.” The appointed melody is “Was Gott thut das ist wohlgethan.”

O FAITHFUL Jesus, Shepherd true,
My Life and Comfort solely,
My Friend, with favors ever new!
Thine own I count me wholly.
I ask of Thee
Most fervently,
Let me not perish ever;
In death be Thou my Savior!

2 Lord, at the end abide with me!
To overcome assist me;
From all my debts, oh, set me free,
And from my sins release me;
When I must die,
Let me espy
Within Thy death and sadness
A glimpse of greater gladness.

3 Appear to me that very hour
With all Thy wounds deep-riven,
By which Thou didst in love devour
My death, and win me heaven;
Thy precious blood
Be for my good,
My soul make fresh and cheery
Within its cavern weary.

4 And when I can no longer speak
Nor move my mouth, to utter,
Receive what sighs, though faint and weak,
Within my heart may flutter;
And in my frame
Let Jesus’ name
Resound with echoes sweetly
If hearing fades completely.

5 This too, O faithful God, I pray,
That Thou wouldst then embrace me
And in that last distressing day
Not from Thy arms displace me;
Oh, would that I,
When I must die,
Receive the gracious favor,
Not from Thy lap to waver!

6 Come to Thy Lamb, O Shepherd mine,
My Life and Comfort solely,
My Friend, my Bridegroom Thou divine!
Thine own I count me wholly.
Come soon to me,
Take me with Thee
Out of this sea of sadness
To realms of ceaseless gladness!

GERMAN
O treuster Jesu, der du bist
mein Hirte, Trost und leben,
mein bester Freund zu jeder Frist,
dem ich mich ganz ergeben:
ich bitte dich
ganz inniglich,
laß mich doch nicht verderben,
wenn kommt die Zeit zum Sterben.

2 Steh mir am letzten Ende bei,
und hilf mir überwinden;
mach mich von meinen Schulden frei,
und sprich mich los von Sünden;
in aller Noth
sei mir dein Tod
und unverschuldtes Leiden
ein Anblick großer Freuden.

3 Erscheine mir zur selben Zeit
mit deinen offnen Wunden,
die du, daß ich soll sein befreit,
aus lauter Lieb empfunden;
dein theures blut
komm mir zu gut,
und labe meine Seele
in ihrer matten Höhle.

4 Und wenn ich nicht mehr sprechen kann,
noch meinen Mund bewegen,
so nimm die schwachen Seufzer an,
die sich im Herzen regen.
Laß für und für
gar süß in mir
den Namen Jesus schallen,
wenn mir's Gehör entfallen.

5 Daneben bitt ich, treuer Gott,
du wollst mich gan umfassen,
und ja nicht in derselben Noth
aus deinen Armen lassen.
Ach möcht ich doch
auch heute noch
die theure Gunst ererben,
in deinem Schooß zu sterben!

6 Ei nun, so komm zu deinem Lamm,
mein Hirte, Trost und Leben,
mein bester Freund und Bräutigam,
dem ich mich ganz ergeben;
komm bald zu mir,
nimm mich mit dir,
aus diesem See der Leiden
ins Reich der ewgen Freuden.

Jesus ist mein Freudenleben

Here is my translation of the Jesus hymn “Jesus ist mein Freudenleben” (Matthäus Büttner, d. 1676, asc.), Ev.-Luth. Gsb #446. Fischer tentatively ascribes it to Ahasuerus Fritsch, since it appears in his Jesuslieder (Jena, 1668) with the title “Jesu, rest of souls.” The stanza initials spell the name “Johannes,” and Wetzel ascribes it to Matthäus Büttner, pastor in Baruth, Upper Lusatia, on the basis of a statement by his son Johann Ernst Büttner; this is supported by the Stade Gsb 1712. Numerous hymnals ascribe it either to Ahasuerus Fritsch or even Angelus Silesius (Johann Scheffler), perhaps on the basis of his name and the character of the text. The melody is “Ach was soll ich Sünder machen.”

JESUS is my Joy in living
Jesus is my Life complete,
Jesus is my Mercy-seat.
All to Him I will be giving;
Safely in His blood it lies:
Jesus is my highest Prize.

2 Otherwise alone I perish;
Without Him, true grace’s Well,
I have only pains of hell,
And must lose all else I cherish;
Thus His arm my help supplies:
Jesus is my highest Prize.

3 He, my Prize, my heart adorneth—
Yea, I have all I could need
When eternal days proceed.
Thus my heart no longer mourneth,
But emboldened upward flies:
Jesus is my highest Prize.

4 And so on my Lord and Savior
Jesus Christ, I will rely,
And all Satan’s tricks defy;
Though I earn all men’s disfavor
Though hellfire may threat’ning rise;
Jesus is my highest Prize.

5 No one can deliv’rance send me
Without Christ my Gideon,
God the Father’s only Son,
Who will keep me and attend me
With His angels strong and wise;
Jesus is my highest Prize.

6 Now make known Thy love so fervent,
Save the son of Thy handmaid,
When my heart is sore afraid;
Give Thy strength unto Thy servant,
Let Thy Spirit me advise.
Jesus is my highest Prize.

7 Evermore this vow I make Thee
Here Thy servant true to be,
Serving Thee in purity;
Give me strength, lest I forsake Thee;
Guard me with Thy watchful eyes;
Jesus is my highest Prize.

8 So in joy I’ll be abiding,
If within Thy house I may
Be a doorkeeper for aye,
And, all thought of self dispelling,
Serve with all that in me lies.
Jesus is my highest Prize.

GERMAN
Jesus ist mein Freudenleben,
Jesus ist mein Lebenskron,
Jesus ist mein Gnadenthron,
ihm nur thu ich mich ergeben;
mich erhält sein theures Blut:
Jesus ist mein höchstes Gut.

2 Ohne Jesum muß ich sterben,
ohne seiner Gnaden Schein
hab ich lauter Höllenpein,
Leib und Seele muß verderben;
drum sein Arm mir helfen thut:
Jesus ist mein höchstes Gut.

3 Hab ich dieses Gut im Herzen,
ei so hab ich Alles wohl,
was ich ewig haben soll,
das mir keinmal bringet Schmerzen,
das mir machet Herz und Muth:
Jesus ist mein höchstes Gut.

4 Also will ich mich verlassen
auf den Herren Jesum Christ
wider alle Teufelslist;
wenn mich Welt und Menschen hassen,
wenn mich schreckt der Höllen Glut:
Jesus ist mein höchstes Gut.

5 Niemand kann mir Rettung senden,
ohne Christ, der Gideon,
Gottes eingeborner Sohn,
welcher sich wird zu mir wenden
mit der Engel Schaar und Hut:
Jesus ist mein höchstes Gut.

6 Nun, laß deine Macht mich merken,
hilf dem Sohne deiner Magd;
wenn mich Furcht und Schrecken nagt,
wollst du deinen Diener stärken;
gieb mir deines Geistes Muth:
Jesus ist mein höchstes Gut.

7 Ein Gelübd will ich dir geben,
dein getreuer Knecht zu sein,
dir am Wort zu dienen rein,
gieb mir nur gesundes leben,
gieb mir deines Geistes Hut:

Here is my translation of the Jesus hymn, “Ach sagt mir nichts von Gold und Schätzen” (Angelus Silesius AKA Johann Scheffler, d. 1677), Ev.-Luth. Gsb #445, first appearing in the author’s Heilige Seelen-Lust (Breslau, 1657) with the title “It [the soul] will love nothing but its Jesus.” Fischer notes a few variants of the refrain which nevertheless little affect the English. More notably, Freylinghausen 1704 has inserted two additional stanzas:

4 Er ist allein mein Licht und Leben,
die Wahrheit selbst, das ewge Wort:
er ist mein Stamm und ich sein Reben,
er ist der Seelen Fels und Hort.
Ein jeder, &c.

5 Er ist der König aller Ehren,
er ist der Herr der Herrlichkeit;
Er kann mir ewges Heil gewähren
und retten mich aus allem Streit.
Ein jeder, &c.

4 He is my Light and Life undying,
The very Truth, th’ eternal Word:
The Vine, and I the branch relying,
He is my Refuge and my Lord.
Whatever, &c.

5 He is the King of all true glory,
He is the Lord of majesty;
He can eternal bliss afford me,
And from all strife deliver me.
Whatever, &c.
The appointed melody is “O daß ich tausend Zungen hätte,” or in the Wisc. hymnal, “Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten.”

OH, tell me not of earthly treasure,
Of pomp and beauty, wealth and gold;
There’s nothing that can give me pleasure
Among the things this world may hold.
Whatever man may lovely call,
I love my Jesus over all.

2 He only is my joy unbounded,
My gold, my prize, my highest art,
On which my eyes can feast, astounded,
And find the peace that calms my heart.
Whatever man may lovely call,
I love my Jesus over all.

3 The world with all its lusts is fated,
The flesh’s beauty will not stay;
Time can make all that is created
By human hands to pass away;
Whatever man may lovely call,
I love my Jesus over all.

4 His palace suffers no destruction,
His kingdom weathers all decay;
His glory knows of no reduction
Both now and in eternal day.
Whatever man may lovely call,
I love my Jesus over all.

5 His riches are beyond all measure,
His face all beauty doth possess,
And what He hath of grace or pleasure
Pales not nor fades as years progress;
Whatever man may lovely call,
I love my Jesus over all.

6 He can above all things uplift me
And His own glory give to me;
He can so many treasures gift me
That I am rich eternally.
Whatever man may lovely call,
I love my Jesus over all.

7 And even though while here I wander,
Still many things I must forgo,
Yet in His glorious kingdom yonder,
He will all blessedly bestow:
I’ll carry on until He call,
And love my Jesus over all.

GERMAN
Ach sagt mir nichts von Gold und Schätzen,
von Pracht und Schönheit dieser Welt;
es kann mich ja gar nichts ergötzen,
was mir die Welt vor Augen stellt.
Ein jeder liebe, was er will:
ich liebe Jesum, der mein Ziel.

2 Er ist alleine meine Freude,
mein Gold, mein Schatz, mein schönstes Bild,
an dem ich meine Augen weide,
und finde, was mein Herze stillt.
Ein jeder liebe, was er will:
ich liebe Jesum, der mein Ziel.

3 Die Welt vergeht mit ihren Lüsten,
des Fleisches Schönheit dauert nicht;
die Zeit kann alles das verwüsten,
was Menschenhände zugericht't,
Ein jeder liebe, was er will:
ich liebe Jesum, der mein Ziel.

4 Sein Schloß kann keine Macht verstören,
sein Reich vergeht nicht mit der Zeit;
sei Thron bleibt stets in gleichen Ehren,
von nun an bis in Ewigkeit.
Ein jeder liebe, was er will:
ich liebe Jesum, der mein Ziel.

5 Sein Reichthum ist nicht zu ergründen,
sein allerschönstes Angesicht,
und was von Schmuck um ihn zu finden,
verblichet und veraltet nicht.
Ein jeder liebe, was er will:
ich liebe Jesum, der mein Ziel.

6 Er kann mich über All's erheben,
und seiner Klarheit machen gleich;
er kann mir so viel Schätze geben,
daß ich werd unerschöpflich reich.
Ein jeder liebe, was er will:
ich liebe Jesum, der mein Ziel.

7 Und ob ich's zwar noch muß entbehren,
so lang ich wandre in der Zeit:
so wird er mir's doch wohl gewähren
im Reiche seiner Herrlichkeit.
Drum thu ich billig, was ich will,
und liebe Jesum, der mein Ziel.

Geduldigs Lämmlein, Jesu Christ!

 Here is my translation of the Passion hymn “Geduldges Lämmlein, Jesu Christ” (Johann Scheffler, d. 1677), as the German text appears in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #171. The author’s favorite theme is pronounced here: self-denial, bearing the cross, following Christ (which is to say, the Christian life); thus we may justly characterize it as “‘Mir nach’ for Passiontide.” But patience is also a focus: Fischer notes that it first appears in the author’s Heilige Seelenlust (Breslau, 1668), book five, with the title: “The soul implores patience of the Lamb Jesus.” A sixth stanza is noted as early as 1738, when Gottschaldt remarks that the hymn “is improved by the last verse by D. Valentin Ernst Löscher.” I have included this stanza in square brackets. The appointed melody is “Machs mit mir, Gott, nach deinem Güt.”

O JESUS Christ, Thou patient Lamb,
Who borest all affliction
And hardships, whensoe’er they came,
And even crucfixion!
Bestow on me the needful pow’r
To face in patience suff’ring’s hour.

2 Thou, Lord, hast suffered all distress,
That I might also suffer,
And, foll’wing, bear with willingness
My cross which Thou dost proffer;
Oh, that I might both cross and pain
E’en as a patient lamb sustain!

3 I heartily would be supplied
With Thine own likeness ever,
To all the world be crucified
And from it waver never;
Meanwhile I long most fervently,
A lamb of Jesus Christ to be.

4 Let come all cross and agony,
Let me by plagues be smitten,
Let scorn and mock’ry fall on me,
Let me be sorely beaten;—
Yet let me in all agony
A patient lambkin ever be!

5 I know the way to joy doth tend
Through many a cross and sorrow;
Thou didst Thyself a glorious end
From cross and suff’rings borrow:
Who shareth not Thy cross and pain
Cannot with Thee salvation gain.

[6 O Lamb of God, then wash me clean
With Thine own blood unstainèd,
That from all misery by Thee
All blessing may be gainèd!
Then in Thy precious wounds I’ll lie,
Endure, and then in patience die.]

GERMAN
Geduldigs Lämmlein, Jesu Christ! [Geduldges . . .]
der du all Angst und Plagen
und Ungemach zu jeder Frist
geduldig hast ertragen,
verleih mir auch zur Leidenszeit
Geduld und alle Tapferkeit.

2 Du hast gelitten, daß auch ich
dir folgen soll und leiden,
daß ich meine Kreuze williglich
soll tragen auch mit Freuden;
ach, möcht ich doch in Kreuz und Pein
geduldig wie ein Lämmlein sein.

3 Ich wünsche mir von Herzensgrund,
dir ähnlich, Herr, zu werden,
daß ich der Welt zu jeder Stund
gekreuzigt sei auf Erden;

weil du in deine Herrlichkeit

Here is my translation of the Passion hymn “Ich danke dir für deinen Tod” (Johann Scheffler, 1677), in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #169, a devout prayer to the Crucified. Its first appearance is in the author’s Heilige Seelenlust oder Geistliche Hirtenlieder (Breslau, 1657), book 2, titled: “It [the soul] thanks the Lord Jesus for His death.” Readers will note similarity to Selnecker’s hymn “Wir danken dir für deinen Tod / Herr Jesu, und dein große Noth,” a hymn in three stanzas, though different metrically, from 1587, itself a reworking of Nicolaus Herman’s Passion hymn “Wir danken dir für deinen Tod, Herr Jesu, und solch große Noth” (Fischer, Kirchenl.-lex., p. 328).The appointed melody is variously “Aus tiefer Not” or “Es ist gewisslich,” and yet most commonly “Nun freut euch lieben Christen gmein.”

I THANK Thee for Thy death endured,
Lord Jesus, and adore Thee
For all Thy pains of heart conferred
By those who beat and tore Thee;
Grant that the merits of that pain
May for my soul refreshment gain
When death my eyelids closeth.

2 I thank Thee for Thy loving grace
Which Thou to me displayest
When Thou dost bow Thy holy face
And all my debt repayest;
Incline to me, my God, as well
When I am faced with death and hell,
Let me Thy grace be sensing.

3 My soul let in Thy favor go
From all its griefs here tasted,
That of Thy precious, costly woe
Naught may on me be wasted.
Receive my soul to heaven’s heart
Where Thou, its dearest Jesus, art,
And let me live forever.

GERMAN
Ich danke dir für deinen Tod,
Herr Jesu! und die Schmerzen,
die du in deiner letzten Noth
empfandst in deinem Herzen.
Laß die Verdienste solcher Pein
ein Labsal meiner Seelen sein,
wenn meine Augen brechen.

2 Ich danke dir für deine Huld,
die du mir hast erzeiget,
da du mit Zahlung meiner Schuld
dein Haupt zu mir genieget;
ach, neig dich auch zu mir, mein Gott!
wenn ich gerath in Todesnoth,
auf daß ich Gnade spüre.

3 Laß meine Seel in deiner Gunst
aus ihrem Leide scheiden,
auf daß an mir nicht sei umsonst
dein theuer werthes leiden.
Nimm sie hinauf zur selben Frist,
wo du ihr liebster Jesus bist,
und laß mich ewig leben.

Tritt her (hin), o Seel, und dank dem Herrn

Here is my translation of the praise hymn “Tritt her (hin), o Seel, und dank dem Herrn,” a cento and revision of the hymn “Auf meine Seel, dank deinem Herrn” (Johann Scheffler, d. 1677), of 15 stanzas, each ending with a refrain, and set to the tune “Machs mit mir Gott nach deinem Gnad” / “Mir nach, spricht Christus unser Held” but implies that the last note in the last 2 lines of each stanza is split (the refrain has trochaic endings, properly). Here the refrain is removed and some reordering occurs, which, as Koch says, results in confusing shifts between Father and Son. The cento is drawn from stanzas 1, 2, 5, 15, 3, and 4, and closed with a variant of 1, thus omitting a section dealing chiefly with the gifts of God in the created world. This revision is appointed to be sung to the tune: “Ich dank dir schon durch deinen Sohn” and in this form is found, e.g,. in the Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #70 (Wisc. Synod). A translation of the 15-stanza hymn, though in a different meter, was made by Dr. Walker, beginning “Come, O my soul, with thankful voice.”

Another form of this hymn in the mystical-devotional Helleleuchtender Hertzens-Spiegel, p. 48 (where it is titled “Thank-Hymn for God’s physical and spiritual benefits. May be sung before or after a meal”), begins “Auf meine Seel! dank deinem Herrn,” and has a different refrain. Several words, and a couple entire lines, besides this differ. These variants are noted in the square brackets after the German original below ([]).

COME forth, O soul, and thank the Lord
For all to thee He’s given
For thousand gifts upon thee poured,
For grace and life in heaven.

2 From naught He made thee first to be,
For such was His good pleasure;
And in His image fashioned thee
With beauty out of measure.

3 For thee He made the world entire
And all its parts maintaineth,
For thee did all with grace inspire—
Yea, all that it containeth.

4 He gives His only Son for thee,
He more than life thee loveth,
Yea, He would give Himself to thee,
And naught this love removeth.

5 He let His heart’s own blood be shed
For all thy trespass ever,
And frees thee from hell’s bondage dread
And flames that perish never.

6 He made thee His own child and son,
E’en as a father tender,
And He will at His heav’nly throne
Bequeath thee endless splendor.

7 Wherefore, O soul, now thank thy Lord
For all to thee He’s given
For thousand gifts upon thee poured,
For grace and life in heaven.

ORIGINAL FORM:

COME forth, O soul, and thank the Lord
For all to thee He’s given
For thousand gifts upon thee poured,
For grace and life in heaven:
O thank Him, soul, for evermore
With thousand heartfelt thanks therefor!

2 From naught He made thee first to be,
For such was His good pleasure;
And in His image fashioned thee
With beauty out of measure:
O thank Him, soul, for evermore
With thousand heartfelt thanks therefor!

3 He let His heart’s own blood be shed
For all thy trespass ever,
And frees thee from hell’s bondage dread
And flames that perish never:
O thank Him, soul, for evermore
With thousand heartfelt thanks therefor!

4 He made thee His own child and son,
E’en as a father tender,
And He will at His heav’nly throne
Bequeath thee endless splendor:
O thank Him, soul, for evermore
With thousand heartfelt thanks therefor!

5 For thee He made the world entire
And all its parts maintaineth,
For thee did all with grace inspire—
Yea, all that it containeth:
O thank Him, soul, for evermore
With thousand heartfelt thanks therefor!

6 All creatures do thee service true,
All must to thee bend lowly;
To thee must nature show, as due,
Itself subservient wholly:
O thank Him, soul, for evermore
With thousand heartfelt thanks therefor!

7 The earth for thee yields wine and bread
And cures for ills provideth,
On earth, beasts great and small are fed,
And under earth gold hideth:
O thank Him, soul, for evermore
With thousand heartfelt thanks therefor!

8 There water runs and streams for thee,
Or seas, the shore surrounding,
Bring forth good pearls and jewelry
And fish for food abounding:
O thank Him, soul, for evermore
With thousand heartfelt thanks therefor!

9 The air gives thee thy breath and sigh,
It doth thee cool and freshen;
The birds and animals that fly
Delight both ear and vision;
O thank Him, soul, for evermore
With thousand heartfelt thanks therefor!

10 The sun rides forth for thee by day
Upon its carriage golden;
The moon gives thee its mellow ray,
To nightly course beholden:
O thank Him, soul, for evermore
With thousand heartfelt thanks therefor!

11 The hosts of angels ready stand,
Their service true to lend thee;
They always watch on every hand
To keep thee and defend thee:
O thank Him, soul, for evermore
With thousand heartfelt thanks therefor!

12 For thee the heav’nly realms were made
With all their glorious treasures,
He waits to have thee there arrayed
With highest joys and pleasures:
O thank Him, soul, for evermore
With thousand heartfelt thanks therefor!

13 But oh! is that not boundless love,
Is that not gracious favor,
Shown thee from God’s own heart above,
To be thine own forever?
O thank Him, soul, for evermore
With thousand heartfelt thanks therefor!

14 Yet more than this, He turns His face
(Wilt thou but find His favor)
From all thy sins and that disgrace
That scorned Him and the Savior;
O thank Him, soul, for evermore
With thousand heartfelt thanks therefor!

15 He gives His only Son for thee,
He more than life thee loveth,
Yea, He would give Himself to thee,
And naught this love removeth.
O thank Him, soul, for evermore
With thousand heartfelt thanks therefor!
