Geduldigs Lämmlein, Jesu Christ!

 Here is my translation of the Passion hymn “Geduldges Lämmlein, Jesu Christ” (Johann Scheffler, d. 1677), as the German text appears in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #171. The author’s favorite theme is pronounced here: self-denial, bearing the cross, following Christ (which is to say, the Christian life); thus we may justly characterize it as “‘Mir nach’ for Passiontide.” But patience is also a focus: Fischer notes that it first appears in the author’s Heilige Seelenlust (Breslau, 1668), book five, with the title: “The soul implores patience of the Lamb Jesus.” A sixth stanza is noted as early as 1738, when Gottschaldt remarks that the hymn “is improved by the last verse by D. Valentin Ernst Löscher.” I have included this stanza in square brackets. The appointed melody is “Machs mit mir, Gott, nach deinem Güt.”

O JESUS Christ, Thou patient Lamb,
Who borest all affliction
And hardships, whensoe’er they came,
And even crucfixion!
Bestow on me the needful pow’r
To face in patience suff’ring’s hour.

2 Thou, Lord, hast suffered all distress,
That I might also suffer,
And, foll’wing, bear with willingness
My cross which Thou dost proffer;
Oh, that I might both cross and pain
E’en as a patient lamb sustain!

3 I heartily would be supplied
With Thine own likeness ever,
To all the world be crucified
And from it waver never;
Meanwhile I long most fervently,
A lamb of Jesus Christ to be.

4 Let come all cross and agony,
Let me by plagues be smitten,
Let scorn and mock’ry fall on me,
Let me be sorely beaten;—
Yet let me in all agony
A patient lambkin ever be!

5 I know the way to joy doth tend
Through many a cross and sorrow;
Thou didst Thyself a glorious end
From cross and suff’rings borrow:
Who shareth not Thy cross and pain
Cannot with Thee salvation gain.

[6 O Lamb of God, then wash me clean
With Thine own blood unstainèd,
That from all misery by Thee
All blessing may be gainèd!
Then in Thy precious wounds I’ll lie,

der du all Angst und Plagen
und Ungemach zu jeder Frist
geduldig hast ertragen,
verleih mir auch zur Leidenszeit
Geduld und alle Tapferkeit.

2 Du hast gelitten, daß auch ich
dir folgen soll und leiden,
daß ich meine Kreuze williglich
soll tragen auch mit Freuden;
ach, möcht ich doch in Kreuz und Pein
geduldig wie ein Lämmlein sein.

3 Ich wünsche mir von Herzensgrund,
dir ähnlich, Herr, zu werden,
daß ich der Welt zu jeder Stund
gekreuzigt sei auf Erden;
