Herr, neig dein Ohren her zu mir

 Psalm LXXXVI.

A Prayer of David.

¶ It is a psalm of supplication against the enemies and despisers, in which David teaches whither we ought to flee in times of trouble and seek refuge, namely, in God alone, whose goodness, faithfulness, power, and wonders he highly acclaims, and therewith warms his faith and makes his prayer ardent. It also gives others the example that they might learn from it what a great cross it is to be persecuted by friends and enemies; and how there is no better thing in such cases than to fear God more than all the world. It prays, finally, that God will bring persecution to an end, and so help that the enemies are put to shame and God retains the glory.

Confusionis deprecatio. [Prayer against being put to shame].

Ein Christ muß leiden Spott und Schand,

doch wendt solchs alles Gottes Hand,

den seinen läßt zuletzt wohl gehn,

wlechs der Gottlos mit Scham muß sehn.

Though Christians must be mocked and spurned,

All this is by God’s hand soon turned,

And made to prosper for His fold,

While wicked men in shame behold.

Mel.: Aus tiefer Noth schrei ich zu dir.

O LORD, bow down Thine ear to me,

And in Thy pity hear me,

For I am poor compared to Thee

Now in my need draw near me,

Preserve my soul, so filled with woe,

For Thou dost count me holy, though

By all the world despisèd.

2 Thou, Lord, didst by Thy gracious choice

Me from the worldly sunder,

That with th’ elect I should rejoice.

My foes are filled with wonder,

For much it doth their heart astound

That I in Christ am holy found,

And hence they persecute me.

3 O Thou my God, Thy servant save!

On Thee my trust is founded.

Have mercy in my trouble grave,

For I on Thee am grounded;

I daily cry and pray to Thee,

Rejoice my grieving soul in me,

To thee in longing lifted.

4 For Thou, Lord, good and gracious art

To those upon Thee calling;

Therefore receive with tender heart

My pray’r before Thee falling,

And to my suppliant voice attend,

My heart’s desire a hearing lend,

To which my troubles urge me.

5 Among the gods there is not found,

O Lord, one Thee resembling,

No man doth so in works abound,

Nor can inspire such trembling.

The nations whom Thou ma’dst to be,

Devoutly come and worship Thee

And to Thy name give glory.

6 For Thou art great and glorious e’er,

Thou doest wonders solely

Apart from Thee no God is there;

Teach me Thy way most holy,

That I may walk in truth, O Lord;

My heart keep ever in Thy Word,

To fear Thy name, Thine only.

7 With all my heart I sing Thy praise

O Lord God, and adore Thee!

For great t’ward me is all Thy grace,

Wherefore I give all glory

Unto Thy precious, worthy name,

Thou hast my soul from sin and shame

And lowest hell delivered.

8 O God, the proud within the land

Against me rise, o’erweening;

My soul the tyrants’ wicked band

Pursues with wrathful meaning;

They have not set on Thee their sight, [They have Thee not before their eyes

But deeply hate Thy truthful Light, [But hotly Thy true light despise

And truth keep persecuting.

9 Thou of compassion, Lord, art full,

Art gracious and long-suff’ring,

In mercy_and truth immeas’rable.

So turn, Thy kindness proff’ring,

Thy strength unto thy servant give

And with Thy might save and relieve

The son of Thy poor handmaid.

10 Upon me place a token bright,

And let me prosper greatly,

That they which hate me, by the sight,

May be ashamed completely.

They must indeed ashamèd be,

Because in need Thou helpest me

And comfortest in trouble.

Herr, neig dein Ohren her zu mir,

erhör mich aus Erbarmen,

denn ich bin gar elend vor dir,

wend dich zu mir sehr Armen,

und mein betrübte Seel bewahr,

denn ich bin vor dir heilig zwar,

von aller Welt verachtet.

2 Du hast mich durch dein Gnadenwahl

von der Welt abgesondert,

und in der Auserwählten Zahl

gesatzt, solchs mein Feind wundert,

verdreußt sie sehr in ihrem Sinn,

daß ich in Christo heilig bin,

drum sie mich hart verfolgen.

3 Hilf deinem Knechte, du mein Gott,

auf dir steht mein Vertrauen.

Sei mir, Herr, gnädig in der Noth,

denn ich auf dich thu bauen.

Ich ruf und bett täglich zu dir,

mein traurig Seel, erfreu du mir,

denn mich nach dir verlanget.

4 Weil du denn gut und gnädig bist

den, die anrufen stete,

so nimm auch auf zu dieser Frist

mein hoch kläglichs Gebete,

und merk auf meines Flehens Stimm,

meins Herzen groß Begierd vernimm,

dazu die Noth mich dringet.

5 Unter den Göttern findet man,

Herr, gar nicht deines gleichen.

Niemand ist der wie du thun kann,

noch deine Werk erreichen.

All Heiden, die du hast gemacht,

vor dir anbeten mit Andacht,

und deinen Namen ehren.

6 Daß du so groß und herrlich bist

und thust allein all Wunder,

auch außer dir kein Gott nicht ist,

zeig mir dein Weg besunder,

daß ich wandel in der Wahrheit,

mein Herz beim Wort erhalt allzeit,

daß ich dein Namen fürchte.

7 Ich dank von ganzem Herzen dir,

mein lieber Gott und Herre!

Denn dein Gnad ist groß über mir,

drum ich auch ewig ehre

den theuren, werthen Namen dein;

du hast errett die Seele mein,

wohl aus der tiefen Helle.

8 Gott es setzen sich wider mich

die stolzen in dem Lande,

nach meiner Seel stellt grimmiglich

der ganz Hauf der Tyrannen,

sie haben dich vor Augen nicht,

und hassen sehr dein wahres Licht,

die Wahrheit sie verfolgen.

9 Du aber, Herr, barmherzig bist,

groß von geduld und Gnaden,

dein Güt und Treu unmeßlich ist,

sieh, Herr, und wend mein Schaden,

sei mir gnädig, und stärk dein Knecht,

mit deiner Macht, und hilf zurecht,

deiner Magd armen Sohne.

10 Thu auch ein Zeichen jetzt an mir,

daß mirs möge wohl gehen,

daß es mein Feinde sehen schier,

und mit Schanden bestehen,

sie müssn alle schämen sich,

daß du mir stehst bei ewiglich

und tröstest mich in Nöthen.

Die Juden rühmten heftig sehr

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Die Juden rühmten heftig sehr” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia (final stanza from later edd.) for Judica Sunday. Gesius 1605 appoints and provides a 4-voice setting of Greitter’s “Aus tiefer Noth,” a.k.a. “Herr, wie du willt” or “Du Lebensbrot.” He had already used Luther’s “Aus tiefer Noth” on Invocavit for Herman’s “Bald da Jesus getaufet wurd.”

Mel.: Aus tiefer Noth schrei ich zu dir (Greitter).

THE Jews did boast exceedingly

And wished to be acclaimèd

As Abraham’s true progeny,

But Christ their boasting shamèd.

They called Him a Samaritan,

A sinner and bedeviled man;

So Jesus thus responded:

2 No man for sin can censure Me

Nor fault My life and teaching.

Thus Jesus spoke in manner free:

Since true is all My preaching,

Why do ye yet not Me believe,

Nor will My doctrine true receive,

And thus refuse to hear Me?

3 Since ye are not of God, His Word

No man among you heareth;

To this replied the Jewish horde:

The devil ’tis Thee steereth!

Say we not well and truthfully

Thou hast a devil guiding Thee,

And seekest Thy own glory?

4 I have no devil, Jesus said,

But I My Father honor;

He will My honor show instead,

Although ye Me dishonor.

I tell you truly, whosoe’er

Shall keep My Word, that man shall ne’er

A bitter death be seeing.

5 It vexed the Jews that word to hear;

They said: Now we know surely

The devil, Thy companion dear,

Must rule Thy senses purely.

The prophets all, and Abr’ham too,

Could not resist death’s mast’ry true,

But all of death have tasted.

6 How shall Thy Word then have the pow’r

That, they therein confiding

Shall not taste death at any hour,

But be in life abiding?

Art Thou than Abr’ham greater then?

Whom makest Thou Thyself? O’er men

Thou giv’st Thyself all honor!

7 Dear Abraham hoped for My day

With heartfelt expectation,

And saw it (hear ye what I say)

Great was his jubilation!

Then said the Jews with doubtful groan:

How hast Thou Abr’ham seen and known?

Thou art of years not fifty!

8 Then Christ replied: Ere Abraham

Began in life existing—

Yea, long before that time, I AM.

The Jews in sin persisting,

Then took up stones, at Him to cast,

But Jesus, hiding, through them passed,

And went out of the Temple.

*9 Lord Jesus, let all bishops be

Assured of Thy true speaking,

And all offense avoid and flee,

No selfish glory seeking;

But let them stop the mouths of those

That would Thy church with lies oppose,

And make of her great havoc.

Wahrlich wer mein Wort festiglich,

wird halten, der soll ewiglich

den bittern Tod nicht sehen.

5 Die Red die Jüden sehr verdroß,

sprachen: Jetzt wir recht merken,

daß der Teufel dein Hausgenoß,

dich in deim Sinn muß stärken,

all Propheten des Todsgewalt,

was machst du aus dir selber?

7 Abraham euer Vater zwar,

auf mein Tag hoffet sehre;

da er ihn sah, glaubt mir fürwahr,

freut er sich noch viel mehre,

drauf sprachen die Juden zuhand:

Wie hast du Abraham gekannt?

Du bist nicht fünfzig Jahre.

8 Drauf antwort Jesus, Gottes Sohn:

Eh denn Abraham ware,

für derselben Zeit bin ich schon.

Da hub der Juden Schare

Stein auf, und wolltn ihn werfen thun,

Jesus aber verbarg sich nun,

und aus dem Tempel ginge.

*9 Hilf, Herr Christ, daß ja sind gewiß

die Bischof ihrer Lehre,

und sich hüten für Ärgernis,

suchen nicht Ruhm noch Ehre,

daß sies Maul können stopfen zu,

den Widersachern, die Unruh
in der Kirchen anrichten.
