Here is my translation of the hymn, “Hilf, Christe, daß wir immerzu” (B. Ringwaldt, 1582) from the author’s Evangelia, for Trinity XVII, the post-Gospel prayer hymn
Mel.: Wo Gott der Herr nicht bei uns hält.
CHRIST, help us ever, free from shame,
The Sabbath day to honor,
To learn, confess, and teach Thy name
In blest and tranquil manner,
Our life directing as a whole,
Unto the saving of the soul
As well befitteth Christians.
2 Help us to be the son of the light
In truth, not pretense feigning,
To walk in humbleness aright,
Ourselves in virtues training,
And meanwhile freely to despair
Of all our works, however fair
And meritorious seeming.
3 For without Thee, Thou highest Good
And all Thy blessings giv’n them,
All lowly mortals’ flesh and blood
Have nothing good within them.
Thy Spirit must the heart affect
If we shall proper faith detect—
Faith that through love is working.
4 Yet by the Word which they are taught,
Which light within them poureth
Is their old Adam brought to naught
Which God’s decrees abhorreth.
Devoted to the pathway clear
That leadeth to the Father dear,
They are by faith sustainèd.
5 Ah, from this vale of tears and grief
To that true Sabbath take us,
Where sin and failing find relief,
And naught shall mournful make us,
And in the year of Jubilee,
With peace and joy eternally
Sing praise with all the angels!

GERMAN
Hilf, Christe, daß wir immerzu
den lieben Sabbath ehren,
den Namen dein in guter Ruh
bekennen, lernen, lehren,
und unsern Wandel meistetheil
anstellen nach der Seelen heil,
als Christen wohl geziemet.
2 Hilf auch, daß wir ohn falschen Schein
des Lichtes Kinder heißen,
in wahrer Demuth gehn herein,
uns aller Tugend fleißen,
und doch darneben sagen frei,
daß unser Thun gar nichtes sei,
es gleiße wie es wölle.
3 Denn ohne dich, du höchstes Gut,
und außer deinen Gaben,
seind alle Menschen Fleisch und Blut
nichts gutes in sich haben,
dein Geist, der muß die Herzen rührn,
wo man soll rechten Glauben spürn,
der durch die Liebe wirket.
4 Doch macht ihr Adam auch zu nicht,
nach seiner argen Weise,
was ihnen wird von deinem Licht
im Wort eingoßen leise,
und lassen sich nur ganz und gar
auf deinen Gang zum Vater klar
und nähren sich des Glaubens.
5 Ach führ uns aus dem Jammerthal,
zum rechten Sabbath-Tage,
da wir dich denn mit großem Schall
ohn Mangel Sünd und Klage
wolln in dem reinen Jubeljahr
mit Fried und Freuden immerdar
samt allen Engeln preisen. Amen.
