Am Sabbath kam Christus zu Gast

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Am Sabbath kam Christus zu Gast” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, for Trinity XVII, with title: “Of the Pharisee’s crafty banquet.”

Mel.: Dies sind die heilgen zehn Gebot.

AS Guest one Sabbath came the Lord,
To dine with one who Him abhorred—

This Pharisee and fellows feigned

That they would each be His friend.

Kyrieleis!

2 And yet in heart they Him despised,

No healthy food begrudged the Christ;

If pow’r were granted to their wish,

They would have made death His dish.

Kyrieleis!

3 Had they their way, He would have died

When He the merest morsel tried,

Grown pale and cold, and stirred no more,

As doth befit sinners sore.

Kyrieleis!

4 Although a chief of Pharisees

Bade Jesus with the rest of these,

’Twas all a ploy, that He might be

Beheld with hostility.

Kyrieleis!

5 Oh, what a dev’lish host is here,

Who will not with a heart sincere

Revere the Christ, the heav’nly Guest,

But murder plot in his breast!

Kyrieleis!

6 Such men may be discovered still:

Some, if they might their pastor kill

By pretense and as though a friend,

Would give a feast to that end.

Kyrieleis!

7 No guile did ever Christ deceive,

Who doth His servants counsel give

With false friends’ bread and wine to stay,

As is the most fitting way.

Kyrieleis!

8 He proved it with the Pharisee,

And also lends a hand, that He

The hypocrite may put to shame,

And in his house spoils his game.

Kyrieleis!

9  By upright words and actions too,

As God Himself doth speak and do,

Let every host note carefully,

And to this Guest gracious be.

Kyrieleis!

GERMAN

Am Sabbath kam Christus zu Gast

zum Pharisäer der ihn haßt,

mit seiner Sekten Tischgeselln,

zum Schein sich als Freunde stelln.

Kyrieleis!

2 Und sind ihm doch im Herzen feind,

gesunde Speis ihm keiner günt.

wenn Wünschen hätte was vermocht,

der Tod wär ihm da gekocht.

Kyrieleis!

3 Den hätt er müssen schlingen bald

am ersten Bissen werden kalt,

und nimmer regen Hand noch Fuß

erstickt, als ein Sünder groß.

Kyrieleis!

4 Denn ob ihn wohl ein Obrister

gebeten hat mit andern mehr,

so wars doch nur dahin gespielt,

daß man auf ihn feindlich hielt.

Kyrieleis!

5 Ei welch ein teufelischer Wirth

ist das, der nicht von Herzen ehrt

Christum, den himmelischen Gast,

sondern nach siem Leben tast!

Kyrieleis!

6 Man findt dergleichen noch itzund,

wenn mancher seinen Pfarrer konnt

im Schein der Freundschaft bringen um,

ein groß Panket hielt er drum.

Kyrieleis!

7 Christum kein List betrogen hat,

er gibt noch seinen Dienern Rath,

bei falscher Freunde Brot und Wein

zu bleiben, wie man soll sein.

Kyrieleis!

8 Er hats in Pharisäers Haus

beweist, er hilft noch immer aus,

daß man den Heuchler schamroth mach,

wohl unter seim eigen Dach.

Kyrieleis!

9 Mit Worten und Exempeln gut,

wie sie Gott selbern redt und thut,

ein jeder Wirth es merken sollt,

und solchem Gast werden hold.

Kyrieleis!

Lob, Ehr und Preis sei Gott

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Lob, Ehr und Preis sei Gott” (E. Neumeister, 1710) from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, first series, for the feast of St. Michael.

Mel.: Nun danket alle Gott.

PRAISE, glory_and thanks to God

The Father, Son and Spirit,

On heaven’s lofty throne,

From whom we nothing merit,

But who in mercy hath

To be our shield and shade,

Our shelter and defense,

The holy angels made.

2 E’en from our mother’s womb

And while our body liveth,

This mighty angel host

God for our service giveth.

And when the vital bond

Of body and soul is rent,

They bear us safely up

To God eternal tent.

3 Oh, let me, dearest God,

While life I here am given

Among mankind, become

Like angels there in heaven!

I know, my flesh and blood

Are fit not for the way;

Therefore, what I cannot,

Do Thou Thyself, I pray!

4 My mouth let of Thy name

Be now and ever singing,

My heart its off’ring glad

Of thanks and worship bringing.

And though I come not near

The Seraphims for skill,

With fondest wish I would

Be like an angel still.

5 Grant that I heartily

May serve Thee, my Defender,

And to my neighbor too

Love’s fitting service render.

Thee, God, the angels serve,

And serve us faithfully,

Therefore I also would

Like them an angel be.

6 Let me seek holiness

and every virtue treasure,

And as Thy Word commands

Live in Thy will and pleasure,

As angels ever do

With joy and faithfully.

And so I would as well

Like them an angel be.

7 Though things on earth remain

In part, and oft neglected,

And my name is enrolled

With those not yet perfected,

Yet some day heavenward

I will be called to Thee;

Oh, then shall I in truth

Like as an angel be!

8 Praise, glory_and thanks to God,

The Father, Son and Spirit,

On heaven’s lofty throne,

Who all our praise doth merit!

All that are angels there,

And that in earth’s abode

Would angels too be called,

Now praise with me my God!

GERMAN

Lob, Ehr und PReis sei Gott

dem Vater und dem Sohne,

und dem, der beiden gleich

im hohen Himmelsthrone,

daß seine Gütigkeit

zu unsrer Hut und Wacht,

zu unserm Schutz und Schirm

die Engel hat gemacht.

2 In Mutterleibe schon,

bis durch das ganze Leben,

ist uns dies starke Heer

zum Dienste zugegeben.

Und wird das Lebensband

an Leib und Seele los,

so tragen sie uns auch

hinauf in Gottes Schoß.

3 Laß mich, mein lieber GOtt,

weil ich noch leb auf Erden,

und unter Menschen bin,

den Engeln ähnlich werden.

Ich weiß, mein Fleisch und Blut

ist nicht geschickt darzu.

Drum, was ich nicht vermag,

dasselbe schaffe du.

4 Mein Mund soll immerdar

von deinem Namen singen.

Mein Herz soll Lob und Dank

zum Freudenopfer bringen.

Und komm ich gleich damit

den Seraphim nicht bei,

so wünsch ich doch dadurch,

daß ich ein Engel sei.

5 Gieb, daß ich dir, mein Gott,

von Herzen dienen möge,

und mich dem Nächsten auch

zu Liebesdiensten lege.

Die Engel dienen dir,

und dienen uns darbei:

so wünsch ich ebenfalls,

daß ich ein Engel sei.

6 Laß mich nach Heiligkeit

und aller Tugend streben,

und wies dein Wort befiehlt,

nach deinem Willen leben.

Wie denn die Engel thun

mit aller Lust und Treu;

so ist zugelich mein Wunsch,

daß ich ein Engel sei.

7 Zwar hier auf dieser Welt

wirds lauter Stückwerk bleiben.

Ich will mich gern ins Buch

der Unvollkommnen schreiben.

Jedoch du führest mich

dereinst in Himmel ein,

da werd ich in der That

als wie ein Engel sein.

8 Lob, Ehr und Preis sei Gott,

dem Vater und dem Sohne,

und dem, der beiden gleich

im hohen Himmelsthrone!

was Engel oben heißt,

und was auf Erden hier

auch Engel heißen will,

das lobe Gott mit mir!
