Ein Gichtbrüchiger Sünder

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Ein Gichtbrüchiger Sünder” (L. Helmbold, d. 1598), from the author’s Schöne geistliche Lieder, for Trinity XIX, an exposition and application of the Gospel from Matthew 9, with title: “Of the Palsied Man.”

Mel: Herr Christ, der einig Gotts Sohn.

A PARALYTIC sinner,

Before the Lord is laid;

Oh, faith works such a wonder,

By which are pleasing made

Both palsied man and bearer!

And what than faith is fairer,

Which here is clear to see?

2 No eye this faith beholdeth

Except the saving Lord’s,

Whom only faith enfoldeth,

And all its trust affords.

Faith nothing more perceiveth

Naught else so much believeth

In all the sprawling world.

3 That he may reach the Savior,

Where is no room for him,

The sick man doth not waver,

But ventures life and limb,

No toil or effort sparing,

Nor bids them cease their bearing,

Till he the roof ascends.

4 The roof is opened quickly,

The man let down to land;

Yea, though the patient sickly

Were in a palace grand,

He gapes not here and yonder,

But looks with faith and wonder

Where Christ His sermon speaks.

5 He too came down from heaven

In lowly form and frail,

True manhood here was given,

With pow’r that doth avail

To pardon all transgression,

And give to man salvation:

This is the Life of faith.

6 Here is a witness offered

By what Christ doth and saith:

“My son, thou sore hast suffered

In life a living death.

Thy sins be thee forgiven!

Grief from thy heart be driven;

Go to thy house relieved!”

7 To Christ, th’ Atonement-maker,

For all His blessings shown,

Whereof each is partaker

Who trusts in Him alone,

Give thanks, with earnest sighing

For all the sick and dying!

To faith shall help appear.

GERMAN

Ein Gichtbrüchiger Sünder

wird zum Herrn Christo bracht:

Der Glaube thut solch Wunder

und angenehme macht

die Träger mit dem Kranken

weit über all Gedanken,

der Glaube scheinbar ist.

2 Doch vor niemandes Augen,

denn nur des Herren Christ,

dahin auch recht Vertrauen

allein gerichtet ist,

nichts mehr der Glaub ansiehet,

vor allem übergehet,

in dieser weiten Welt.

3 Daß er zu Christo komme,

weil sonst kein Raum da war,

mit dem geplagten Manne,

wagt er dran Haut und Haar,

versucht all sein Vermögen,

ist auf das Dach gestiegen,

er kann nicht abelan.

4 Durch das Dach aufgebrochen,

den Mann herunter läßt,

wenn er gleich in ein hohen

Pallaste wär gewest,

kaft doch nicht hin und wieder,

sondern tracht nur hernieder,

da Christus prediget.

5 Der selbst vom Himmel kommen

in niedriger Gestalt,

die Menschheit angenommen

und hat darinn Gewalt

die Sünde zu vergeben,

das ist des Glaubens Leben

und hilft an Leib und Seel.

6 Wie denn hier Christus saget,

und mit der That beweist:

Mein Sohn, du bist geplaget

an Leib und Seel gewest:

die Sünd ich dir erlasse,

den Trost im Herzen fasse,

geh nur getrost zu Haus.

7 Für solche große Wohlthat

in seligem Gebrauch,

daran ein jeder Theil hat

der an ihn gläubet noch,

laßt dem Herrn Christo danken,

mit Bitt für alle Kranken,

der Glaub wird Hülf erfahrn.
