Frohlockt mit Freud, ihr Völker all

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Frohlockt mit Freud, ihr Völker all” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), based on Psalm XLVII, Omnes gentes plaudite, with melody assignment “Erstanden ist der heilig Christ.” Vierling writes (Biblia, 742), “It is a prophecy of Christ, how He shall ascend and become King over all the world without swinging of swords, only through shouting, singing, and trumpets, that is, through the joyful preaching of the Gospel; just as the walls of Jericho fell through trumpets and shouting without any weapons.”

 

O CLAP your hands, ye lands, rejoice,
And shout to God with gladsome voice,
The fearsome Lord of highest worth,
Is King and Lord o’er all the earth,
Alleluia.

2 With pow’r He doth subdue His foes,
The nations underfoot He throws,
He chose us His inheritance,
The church He loves, His excellence,
Alleluia.

3 With shouts of joy ascends God’s Son,
The Lord, with ringing trumpet’s tone,
Sing praise to God, sing praise to Him,
Who sin and hell and death o’ercame,
Alleluia!

4 Christ is the Lord of all the earth;
Sing praise with wisdom, praise His worth,
He reigneth over everything,
And heathen to His realm doth bring.

5 The princes too and mighty He
Brings to His Christian company,
If they to God but honor give,
Defend the church and doctrine pure,
Alleluia.

Der Allerhöchſt iſt ſchrecklich ſehr,
Der gantzen Welt König und HErr,

2  Mit Macht er ſeine Feinde zwingt,
Leut unter unſer Füße dringt,
Zum Erbtheil hat er uns erwehlt,
Die Kirch ſeim Hertzen wolgefellt,
Alleluja.

3  Mit Jauchzen fehrt auf Gottes Sohn
Der HErr mit hellr Poſaunen Thon.
Lobſingt, lobſinget unſerm Gott,
Der überwandt Sünd, Hell und Tod,
Alleluja.

4  CHriſtus iſt aller Welt ein HErr,
Lobſingt Ihm klüglich, preiſt ſein Ehr,
Sein Herrſchaft, über alle gleich
Bringt auch die Heyden zu ſeim Reich,
Alleluja.

5  Auch Fürſten und die mächtig ſeyn,
Nimpt er auff zu der Chriſten Gmein,
Wenn ſie nur geben GOtt die Ehr,
