Nun freut euch alle Völker schon

 Psalm XLVII.
A Psalm of the children of Korah, to precent.

¶ It is a prophecy of Christ, how He should ascend and become king over all the world without any sword-blows, only by shouting, singing, praising, glorifying, that is, by the joyful preaching of the Holy Gospel, to hear, learn, sing, and confess which it exhorts all men; and describes the King with His majesty, power, authority, honor, love, election of grace, judgment, and righteousness.

Dominus exaltans.

With gladness men God’s praises swell,
For He the people ruleth well,
With shouts of joy He high ascends,
Exalted high to all earth’s ends.

Mel.: Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gmein

ALL people, now with gladness sing,
And clap yours hands rejoicing,
And shout to Christ, God’s Son, the King,
Round earth glad anthems voicing.
For He who is Most High of all,
Is Jesus Christ, the King supreme,
O’er all the earth He reigneth.

2 Beneath us nations now that rage
He will with might be bringing;
He chose us for His heritage,
And so we will be singing
To Him a song of praise, that He
Hath loved us so; thus glad are we
That He hath made us glorious.

3 With shouts of joy our God goes up,
With trumpet strain resounding.
And with Him goes a mighty troop
Of fellows glad surrounding,
Sing praise to God, to Him sing praise,
To His praise your voices raise,
Sing to our King your praises.

4 For God is King of all the earth,
Its farthest shore commanding;
So great and matchless is His worth,
Oh, sing with understanding!
Above the heathen He doth soar
A mighty King forevermore,
Set on His throne most holy.

5 His kingdom through the world extends,
To all earth’s ends He reigneth,
And many
‿a prince before Him bends
And no more proud remaineth,
But comes to faith and heav’nly birth,
For God among the shields of earth
Is mightily exalted.

GERMAN
Nun freut euch alle Völker schon
frohlockt mit euern Händen,
und jauchzet Christo Gottes Sohn,
fröhlich an allen Enden.
Denn er der aller höchster ist,
der größte König Jesus Christ,
auf dem ganzen Erdboden.

2 Die Völker wird er unter uns
durch sein göttlich Gwalt zwingen,
zum Erbtheil hat er uns aus Gunst
erwählt, drum wir ihm singen
ein Lied zu Lob, daß er uns so,
gar hoch geliebt, und sind des froh,
daß er uns herrlich machet.

3 Mit Jauchzen unser Gott fährt auf,
mit der Posaunen helle.
Mit ihm zugleich ein großer Hauf
der freuden Mitgesellen,
lobsinget Gott, lobsinget ihm,
lobsinget ihm mit heller Stimm,
unserm König lobsinget.

4 Denn Gott ist König auf der Erd,
auf dem ganzen Erdkreise,
drum singet ihm, er ists wohl werth,
klüglich mit schöner weise,
denn er über die Heiden ist
ein König groß zu aller Frist,
sitzt auf seim heilgen Stuhle.

5 Sein Reich geht durch die ganze Welt,
er herrscht an allen Enden.
Manch großer Herr ihm auch zufällt,
zu ihm aufhebt sein Hände,
wird im Glauben ein guter Christ,
denn Gott sehr hoch erhaben ist,
auf Erden bei den Schilden.

Jauchzet und spring, ihr Christen all

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Jauchzet und spring, ihr Christen all” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm XLVII, Omnes gentes, with title “Psalm of thanksgiving and prophecy of the calling of the Gentiles and that God governs all things by His Gospel.” The Ionian/major melody by Waldis, hovering in the upper rank, suggests celebratory singing, and follows the meter 88.88 D (ABABCDCD), a meter used notably by Hegenwalt’s earlier Miserere hymn, “O Herre Gott, begnade mich,” with melody composed by Walter.

YE Christians all, clap, shout, and spring
For Christ the King, our glorious Lord!
Praise Him with joyful noise and sing,
Who ought by us to be adored!
The King of all the earth is He,
And all the peoples He subdues
By Word, not swords and armory,
To Him all things must humbled be.

2 He by His suff’ring, death, and pains,
His rising, and ascent to heav’n,
Hath put both sin and hell in chains,
And death and devil captive driv’n
As trophies in His retinue
Of triumph, by His pow’r divine.
Therefore all honor He is due,
All princes praise to Him consign.

3 All tribes and nations of the earth
His reign let highly glorify
That He alone hath been set forth
The One we must be rescued by
And freed from evil evermore,
And of eternal life be heirs;
This we believe, and Him adore
To whom in glory none compares.

4 God hath in His begotten Son
A Judge for all humanity
And Savior made, and Him alone,
That by His Word they drawn might be
Wherever it is rightly taught,
Of heathenkind a mighty host,
One fold, by one great Shepherd brought
And gathered in from coast to coast.

5 The kings of earth who wield the rod,
And subjects all of every race
Shall gathered be to mighty God,
Adored by Abr’ham for His grace,
And He shall honored be alone
On earth by all authority,
The truth of Christ must rulers own,
And Him exalt eternally.

Frohlockt mit Freud, ihr Völker all

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Frohlockt mit Freud, ihr Völker all” (Cornelius Becker, d. 1604), based on Psalm XLVII, Omnes gentes plaudite, with melody assignment “Erstanden ist der heilig Christ.” Luther writes (Biblia, 742), “It is a prophecy of Christ, how He shall ascend and become King over all the world without swinging of swords, only through shouting, singing, and trumpets, that is, through the joyful preaching of the Gospel; just as the walls of Jericho fell through trumpets and shouting without any weapons.” Updated May 14, 2026.

O CLAP your hands, ye lands, rejoice,
And shout to God with gladsome voice!
The fearsome Lord of highest worth,
Is King and Lord o’er all the earth,
Alleluia.

2 With pow’r He doth subdue His foes,
The nations underfoot He throws.
He chose us His inheritance—
The church He loves, His excellence,
Alleluia.

3 With shouts of joy God’s Son ascends,
Clear trumpet-tone the Lord attends.
Sing praise to God, adore His name,
Who sin and hell and death o’ercame!
Alleluia.

4 Christ is the Lord of all the earth;
Sing praise with wisdom, praise His worth,
He reigns o’er all created things,
And heathen to His kingdom brings.
Alleluia.

5 The princes and the mighty He
Joins to His Christian company
If they God’s glory but extend,
And church and doctrine pure defend.
Alleluia.
