Here is my translation of the hymn, “Erschienen ist der Freudentag” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst for Whitsunday,

Mel.: Erschienen ist der herrlich Tag.

 

NOW doth the Day of Joy appear,
For which no man enough can cheer;
God sent His Spirit on this day,
To show to us the heav’nly way.
Alleluia!

2 What was today seen long ago
Is for our comfort here below,
To us God still His Spirit sends,
And as our Comforter commends.
Alleluia!

3 He by whom every tongue was learned
And to Himself the heathen turned,
Still teacheth now His Christians dear
At every hour, both far and near.
Alleluia!

4 As then the stranger stood amazed,
God’s pow’r is still in churches praised,
Throughout the world her line is gone,
The Word our heav’nly life bestows.

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Als die Jünger beisammen warn” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sontags-Evangelia, for Quasimodogeniti. Herman indicates with the hymn for Easter day that the melody (= “Erschienen ist”) could be used for every Sunday in Eastertide. Gesius 1605 provides his own setting:

BEFORE His foll’wers’ huddled band

The risen Savior came to stand,

Whenas for fear of Jewish threat

The doors were shut and bolted yet.

2 Into their midst then entered He,

And said: My peace upon you be!

His hands and side to them displayed

With print and puncture-mark arrayed.

3 Right glad were His disciples then!

The Savior speaking peace again,

Said: As My Father Me did send,

So send I you to earth’s far end.

4 He breathed on them His sacred breath:

Receive the Holy Ghost, He saith,

When ye remit sin, guilt, and pain,

Men shall in truth remission gain.

5 But then was Thomas not with them,

Thereafter, when to them he came,

With joy the tidings they outpoured,

And told him: We have seen the Lord.

6 Then Thomas to the others saith,

On this I cannot rest my faith,

Except I see the nail-prints, and

Put in my fingers, and my hand.

7 Christ, in like manner the eighth day

Appearing, did to Thomas say:

Thy finger hither only reach,

Thy hand thrust in the lance’s breach.

8 And be not faithless, but believe!

Then Thomas did his Lord receive:

My Maker, Lord, and God Thou art!

I Savior own Thee with my heart.

9 O Thomas, Christ the Lord replied:

Because thou see’st, thou dost confide;

But blest is he that doth not see,

Yet firmly doth believe in Me.

10 Of signs did Jesus many yet

Which are not here in writing set,

But these are written and abide

Among all Christians far and wide.

11 That we in Jesus may believe,

And that believing, through His name

2 Er trat unter sie mitten ein,

3 Die Jünger wurden herzlich froh,

da sprach der Herr zu ihn also:

Wie mich mein Vater hat gesandt,

so send ich euch in alle Land.

4 Er bließ sie an, und sprach zu ihn’n:

Den heilgen Geist jetzt nehmet hin,

wenn ihr erlaßt Sünd, Schuld und Pein

5 Thomas das Mal nicht bei ihn’n war,

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Am Sabbath früh Marien drei” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sontags-Evangelia for Easter Day. Interestingly, Herman says “Early on the Sabbath,” obviously meaning the latter in the Christian sense inaugurated by the resurrection, while the text says “Very early in the morning, the first day of the week.” With this hymn is the first instance of the melody now known as “Erschienen ist der herrlich Tag” (a hymn originally designed especially for the girls’ school), but a note indicates that the melody is appointed for all the Gospel paraphrases for Eastertide written in LM (88.88).

ON Sunday morn three Marys come

With spices early to the tomb

As now the shining day doth break,

And heaven’s sun is seen to wake.

2 Who will for us the stone (they said)

Roll from before the tomb so dread?

But when they did the tomb behold

They saw the stone away was rolled.

3 They entered then the sepulcher

And saw the angels sitting there

Upon the right side and arrayed

In long white garments heaven-made.

4 In great affright the three are caught,

The angel saith to them: Fear not.

Ye seek Christ crucified, your Head,

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Heut triumphieret Gottes Sohn, / nach überstandner Passion” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, first series, for Easter Day, a parody of Stolzhagen’s hymn retaining the first lines of each stanza. On this occasion I have chosen not to use pre-existing translations for these lines (cf. O. Rupprecht/M. Carver in Walther’s Hymnal 107). Only one Alleluia is indicated, which may suggest “Erschienen ist” rather than the hymn melody assigned, since no form of the hymn to my knowledge has only one Alleluia.

TODAY in triumph God the Son

Rose from the tomb, His suff’rings done.

Death, that before received Him dead,

Is now in Jesus’ triumph led.

May tread the foe beneath his feet.

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Da kommen sollt der Welt Heiland” (N. Herman, 1561), from the author’s Sonntags-Evangelia, for the Annunciation. Gesius 1605 adapts an abbreviated form of Luther’s melody for “Verleih uns Frieden gnädiglich,” stopping before the final (fifth) line. For congregational purposes, “Erschienen ist” (with Kyrie for Alleluia) or “Erhalt uns Herr” might work well.

WHEN all men’s Savior was to come,

God Gabriel sent to seek the home

Of Mary, chaste with virgins’ crown,

All in a Galilean town.

2 Into her house the angel came,

And told his errand without blame,

Hail, gracious maid of tender heart,

God is with thee, thou blessed art.

3 When him she saw, she, troubled, thought

What sort of greeting here was brought,

Hereat the angel to her said

Chaste Mary, be thou not afraid!
