Ihr Christen, seht, daß ihr ausfegt

Here is my translation of the hymn “Ihr Christen, seht, daß ihr ausfegt” (Anon., 1659), an Easter hymn on the festival Epistle, 1 Corinthians 5:6–8. Its first appearance in the Hanover hymnal of 1659 bears the title: “From 1 Cor. 5. Mel. ‘Wo Gott der Herr nicht bei uns hält’ or ‘O heiligste Dreifaltigkeit.’” Fischer states that, because many early instances in hymnals were accompanied by the initials L. B., it was often ascribed to Lucas Backmeister (1578–1633). Other ascriptions include Philipp Jacob Spener and Erhard Meyer. Fischer himself suggests one of the two editors of the Hanoverian hymnal: David Denicke or Justus Gesenius. The Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #199 ascribes it to L. Backmeister and assigns to it the melody “Nun freut uch, lieben Christen gmein.”

 

 

 

 

YE Christians, seek to purge away
What sin ye still discover
And leaven which remains today—
No more must be left over—
That ye a new, clean lump may be,
Unleavened, in all purity,
A lump to God well pleasing.

2 And yet watch carefully indeed,
Attention ever giving,
How ye your daily life may lead,
Before your Maker living:
For soon a little leaven may
Spread through the lump from day to day
And leaven it completely.

3 Such ever is the way with sin:
Where one in pow’r is dwelling,
There too remains a cause within
E’er to new sins compelling;
The Lamb in the new covenant
Demands the heart be penitent,
From top to bottom spotless.

4 He that the Paschal feast would keep
Must not let be omitted
This bitter herb of penance deep:
’Gainst evil must be pitted,
That Christ our Paschal Lamb, for us
Once slaughtered on the holy cross
May by His blood then cleanse him.

5 So let us eat the Paschal feast
Not in all wicked leaven;
Let all hypocrisy be ceased
To which we are so given,
And let us keep it solemnly
In good, unleavened purity
And truth, as Christians ought to.

6 Lord Jesus, Paschal Lamb, bestow
On us Thy Easter blessing,
That we Thy heav’nly peace may know,
A spotless heart possessing,
And grant that by Thy Holy Word,
Sin’s leaven may from us purged
In e’er-increasing manner.

Ihr Christen seht, daß ihr ausfegt,
was sich in euch von Sünden
und altem Sauerteig noch regt,
nichts muß sich des mehr finden,
daß ihr ein neuer Teig möcht sein,
der ungesäuert sei und rein,
ein Teig der Gott gefalle.

2 Habt doch darauf genaue Acht,
daß ihr euch wohl probiret,
wie ihrs vor Gott in allem Macht,
und euren Wandel führet:
ein wenig Sauerteig gar leicht
den ganzen Teig fortan durchschleicht,
daß es wird ganz durchsäuert.

3 Also es mit den Sünden ist;
wo eine herrschend bleibet,
da bleibt auch, was zu jeder Frist
zum Bösen ferner treibet.
Das Osterlamm im neuen Bund
erfordert, daß des Herzens Grund
ganz rein in Allem werde.

4 Wer Ostern halten will, der muß
dabei nicht unterlassen
die bittern Salzen wahrer Buß;
er muß das Böse hassen,
daß Christus unser Osterlamm,
für uns geschlacht't ans Kreuzes Stamm,
ihn durch sein Blut rein mache.

5 Drum laßt uns nicht im Sauerteig
der Bosheit Ostern essen,
auch nicht in Schalkheit, ob sie gleich
uns hat sehr hart besessen;
vielmehr laßt uns die Osterzeit
im süßen Teig der Lauterkeit
und Wahrheit christlich halten.

6 Herr Jesu, Osterlamm, verleib
uns deine Ostergaben,
daß wir den Frieden und dabei
ein reines Herze haben.
Gieb, daß in uns dein heiligs Wort
der Sünden Sauerteig hinfort
je mehr und mehr ausfege.
