Christus schickt aus in alle Welt (O Vater der Barmherzigkeit)

 Here is my translation of the Apostles hymn “O Vater der Barmherzigkeit / wir danken dir mit Innigkeit” (asc. Bohemian Brethren) as it appears in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #261. This is a cento of the 15-stanza evangelical “correction of the Latin hymn for Apostles, “Beata nobis gaudia,” titled: “Christus schickt aus in alle Welt” (Michael Weiße, 1531), of which it comprises stanzas 12–14 with a little alteration. Weiße first describes Christ’s institution of the apostolic office and their ministry according to Bohemian Brethren teaching, then briefly mentions its distortion by the papacy, and concludes with our cento (the early Bohemian Brethren books have a “finger” here, indicating an optional starting place or important section), a thanksgiving for deliverance from papistic error and a supplication for the continued provision of ministers. A further, 15th stanza is irregularly found in early Bohemian sources (along with other light variants in wording). The original melody adapted from “Beata nobis gaudia” was replaced in most Lutheran hymnals by the more familiar “Erhalt uns, Herr, bein deinem Wort.”

 

O FATHER of all mercy, Thee
We thank in deep humility,
That Thou our longing heart hast stirred
And servants true on us conferred.

2 Provide us too with what we need,
Thy Holy Word, our meat indeed,
E’en as Thou makest now transpire
According to Thy heart’s desire:

3 That we may all in unity
Filled with the righteousness from Thee
Through Jesus Christ, Thy dearest Son,
Obtain th’ eternal joy and crown.

CHRIST sent His twelve apostles forth
With mighty pow’r, to all the earth
To teach all men (so were they sent)
God’s will and gracious covenant.

2 They first proclaimed the joyous news
In public witness to the Jews,
But these with force refused the same,
So to the wider world they came.

3 They preached to heathens openly
The true faith in its purity,
How through Christ Jesus men possess
God’s favor and all blessedness.

4 And those who then their word believed,
And from the Spirit faith received,
And with their mouth confessed the Christ,
Into God’s cov’nant they baptized.

5 By this they gave them purity,
In God’s love and true harmony,
And in Christ’s body and His blood,
True righteousness, their highest good.

6 But he who followed his own way,
Nor in the one true Way would stay,
Him they excluded by the ban,
To Satan handing o’er the man. [Nor other torments laid on man.]

7 But if he with contrition burned,
And being drawn by God, returned,
His ways amended, patience prayed,
They loosed the debt that on him weighed.

8 And showed Him by Christ’s mighty pow’r
True comfort, peace, and fellowship,
And him exhorted ne’er by sin
To lose this precious grace again.

9 Thus did they Christendom impress
With love and all submissiveness,
Nor could the antichrist devise
How he might fell them by his lies.

10 When they were dead, not many a year,
And men no longer cautious were,
He twisted Scripture to his will,
And did the church with poison fill. [And thence did mortal poison spill.]

11 He made his pompous throne secure,
His doctrine taught as right and pure,
And whoso would his word gainsay,
Must bear adversity alway.

12 O Father of all mercy, Thee
We thank in deep humility
That Thou our heart to Thee hast won,
And brought us out of Babylon.

13 Provide us carefully and well
With shepherds and food spiritual;
E’en as Thou makest now transpire
According to Thy heart’s desire:

14 That we may all in unity,
Filled with the righteousness from Thee,
Through Jesus Christ, Thy dearest Son,
Obtain th’ eternal joy and crown.

15 Amen we sing with one accord
From lips and heart as one outpoured,
Assured that Thou, through Christ Thy Son,
Wilt do as is by fathers done.

gieb uns dein Wort, die rechte Speis,
wie du denn angefangen hast
nach aller deines Herzens Lust.

3 Damit wir all in Einigkeit,
erfüllet mit Gerechtigkeit,
durch Christum deinen lieben Sohn,
erlangen ewig Freud und Kron.

Christus schickt aus in alle Welt
sein Apostel mit großer Gwalt,
daß sie den Leuten machen kund
Gottes Willen und neuen Bund.

2 Und die predigten offenbar,
zum ersten der Jüdischen Schaar:
und die verwrf sie mit Gewalt,
also kamen sie in die Welt.

3 Und predigten der Heiden Schaar
den rechten Glauben rein und klar,
wie man durch Christum Gottes Huld
zur Seligkeit erlangen sollt.

4 Welch aber glaubten ihrem Wort
und beweisten die Neugeburt,
das auch bekannten mit dem Mund,
die tauften sie in Gottes Bund.

5 Zeugten ihn’n dadurch Reinigkeit,
in Gottes Lieb und Einigkeit,
und mit des Herren Leib und Blut,
Gerechtigkeit zu seinem Gut.

6 Wer aber sein Mutwillen trieb,
und nicht in dieser Wahrheit blieb,
den schloßen sie aus durch den Bann,
übergaben ihn dem Satan.

7 Wenn denn ein solcher Reu gewann,
von Gott gezogen, wieder kam,
sich bessert und but um Geduld,
vergaben sie ihm seine Schuld.

8 Und zeugten ihm durch Christi Kraft
Trost, Fried und heilig Gemeinschaft,
vermahnten ihn, daß er solch Huld
nicht mehr durch Sünd verlieren sollt.
