Es fähret heute Gottes Sohn

Here is my translation of the Ascension hymn “Es fähret heute Gottes Sohn” (Anon., 1714?), appearing in ELGB #210. Fischer traces it only back to Freylinghausen 1714, but describes it as an “obvious reworking of an early hymn.” It is somewhat reminsicent of “Heut triumphieret Gottes Sohn” (Caspar Stolzhagen, 1592), whose tune (Gesius, 1601) is first appointed for it, with Hallelujahs after every two lines (cf. LW 136 “Today in Triumph Christ Arose”). The relationship of the two hymns reflects that of their possible Latin inspirations, Surrexit Christus Dominus and Caelos ascendit hodie (of which Latin and German versions are found e.g., in the Buffalo Synod hymnal). In the Wisc. Hymnal, the melody “Erschienen ist der herrlich Tag” is used with the single Hallelujah at the end of the stanza.

TODAY the Son of God ascends
In majesty that never ends,
He to the Father’s throne doth rise,
All things to rule by counsel wise.

2 The devil’s might He hath made naught,
And slain his host that ’gainst Him fought,
E’en as a champion slays his foe
When to the battle line they go.

For Thou art sinners’ Savior true,

Partakers of Thy victory.

4 The foe in us let be undone,

wie mit Gewalt ein starker Held

daß wir indem du uns machst rein,
