Treuer Hirte deiner Heerde

Here is my translation of the Church hymn “Treuer Hirte deiner Heerde” (Henriette Catharine von Gersdorf, 1711), first appearing in the Porst hymnal of 1711, later in the authoress’s Geistriche Lieder (Halle, 1729) with ten stanzas. Fischer quotes Stier as saying: “Intercession hymn of the church in times of oppression and persecution, full of zeal for the Lord’s Word and glory, with compassion for the [spiritually] poor and blind, full of confidence in Him who is the Immanuel of His own: one worthy of the earliest masters.” Our text is taken from Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #234, where the appointed melody is “Zion klagt mit Angst und Schmerzen.”

 

FAITHFUL Shepherd of Thy members,
Of Thy flocks Thou strong Defense!
See how lowly dust and embers,
Rage and storm with impudence,
Mighty God! defying Thee,
And are set maliciously
On Thy church’s devastation
And the ruin of Thy nation.

2 Thou, Immanuel, art reigning;
We in body and soul, are Thine,
Every human help disdaining,
Needing but Thy help divine!
For Thy flock Thou art awake,
To the field dost Thee betake,
For Thy very Word to battle
And the foe’s proud heart to rattle.
 
3 Save Thy truth and holy teaching,
Save the glory of Thy name,
Save, O Christ, Thy Gospel preaching,
Save Thy Passion’s pow’r and fame,
And the service which we owe
To Thee only! From the foe
Thou canst not keep all concealèd,
But Thy might shall be revealèd.

4 Lord, Thou puttest to confusion
All the enemy’s deceit,
Turning all the vain delusion
Of their counsels to defeat;
Persecution is their aim,
Yet Thou bringest soon to shame
All who join themselves together
By Thy storms that none can weather.

5 Strengthen still the faith unsteady,
Which, as tribulations near,
Flesh and fiend are ever ready
To subdue by dread and fear,
To this end their toiling goes;
Lord, do not too much impose!
Well observes Thy mind omniscient
That our pow’rs are insufficient.

6 Save Thine own, and turn the factions
Of the enemy to Thee;
Curb their persecuting actions,
Lest too great for us they be;
Help to the oppressed convey,
Lead upon the even way
Those who still by Satan’s lying
Blindly from Thy grace are flying.

7 Let us walk uprightly, truly,
With a dovelike innocence,
Lead a life serene and holy,
Yet with wisdom’s confidence,
And these evil days redeem,
Ware of those who pious seem,
Serpent-wise, our actions gauging
’Gainst the foes’ deceit and raging.

8 Watching, praying without ending,
May we e’er attentive dwell,
And to Thee leave the defending,
For Thou doest all things well.
Here will Christ our Fighter be,
And Defender there with Thee,
Till in yonder new creation
We shall join His celebration.

Treuer Hirte deiner Heerde,
deiner Glieder starker Schutz!
siehe doch, wie Asch und Erde,
großer Gott! mit Grimm und Trutz,
tobt und wüthet wieder dich;
sie vermißt sich freventlich,
deine Kirche zu zerstören
und dein Erbtheil zu verheeren.

2 Du, Herr! bist ja unser König,
wir sind dein mit Leib und Seel.
Menschenhülf ist ja zu wenig,
wo nicht du, Immanuel!
zu der Deinen Rettung wachst
und dich selbst zu Felde machst,
für dein wahres Wort zu kämpfen
und der Feinde Muth zu dämpfen.

3 Es gilt deines Namens Ehre,
deiner Wahrheit Heiligthum,
Jesu, deine Glaubenslehre,
deines Leidens Kraft und Ruhm,
und den Dienst, den dir allein
wir zu leisten schuldig sein.
Dazu kannst du ja nicht schweigen,
du mußt deine Allmacht zeigen.

4 Du verlachst der Feinde Tücke,
treibst der bösen Herzens Schluß,
Rath und Anschlag selbst zurücke,
daß er nicht gelingen muß.
Die Verfolgung hat ihr Ziel,
du verhängst ihr nicht zu viel
und pflegst derer nur zu spotten,
die, Herr! wider dich sich rotten.

5 Stärke nur den schwachen Glauben,
den, bei so betrübter Zeit,
Fleisch und Satan uns zu rauben
und mit Furcht und Blödigkeit
uns zu schrecken sind bemüht.
Deine Weisheit kennt und sieht
deiner Kinder schwach Vermögen,
und wird nicht zu viel auflegen.

6 Hilf den Deinen, und bekehre
unsrer Feind blindes Heer;
der Verfolgung steure wehre
daß sie uns nicht sei zu schwer.
Nimm dich der Bedrängten an,
leit auch die auf rechte Bahn,
die noch itzt durch Satans Lügen,
sich selbst um ihr Heil betrügen.

7 Laß uns recht und redlich handeln
und in Tauben-Einfalt dir
ganz gelassen heilig wandeln,
doch dabei uns kluglich hier
schicken in die böse Zeit,
und vor falscher Heiligkeit,
vor der Feinde List und Wüthen,
uns mit Schlangenklugheit hüten.

8 Laß mit Beten und mit Wachen
stets uns stehn auf unsrer Hut,
dich, Herr! Alles lassen machen,
denn du machst Alles gut.
Jesus streitet für uns hier
und vertritt uns dort bei dir,
bis wir auf der neuen Erden
bei ihm triumphiren werden.
