Gleichwie sein Haus der Vogel baut

Here is my translation of the Church hymn “Gleichwie sein Haus der Vogel baut” (Nicolaus Selnecker, d. 1592), as it appears in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #264, along with the omitted stanzas from the 10-stanza version originally published in the author’s Geistliche Psalmen (1587) with the title “For Preservation in God’s Word: from the 84th Psalm.” It was originally appointed to be sung to “Mensch willt du leben seliglich” with “Kyrioleis” after each stanza, presumably dividing the first slur of the last line to accommodate a full eight syllables. In later use, however, the melody “Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort” was appointed and the Kyrioleis omitted.

LIKE as the sparrow builds his home,
The swallow to her nest doth come,
So do I seek with heart sincere,
Lord Jesus Christ, Thy altar dear.

2 Through sorrow’s valley help me, Lord!
Thy servants everywhere afford,
That Thy blest fount may be maintained
And we preserve the faith unstained.

3 Far better ’tis to be the least
In Thy assembly, at Thy feast,
Than worldly glory to possess
with wealth, goods, money, fame, success.

4 Thou, Lord, my Light, my Sun, my Shield,
Rich blessings graciously dost yield;
Help, Lord, the faith in us increase,
And let our hearts in Thee find peace.

[5 Preserve Thy church in every land,
Thy name to every clime expand,
Lord Christ, our sure Foundation be,
Give faithful teachers constantly.

6 With us abide, Thy crown defend,
Thy Word and saving doctrine tend;
Thou hast all pow’r and might indeed,
Though Thee the world may little heed.

7 What is the world? What is its art?
What are its dreams that soon depart?
Who hath Thy Word will always stay;
Pride, pow’r, and favor pass away.

8 Help, O Lord Christ, and hide Thee not,
Nor for our sins our due allot;
Consider our life’s brevity
And be our stay continually.

9 Thy Church preserve, Thy Judgment speed,
Leave us no more to wait in need,
Deliver us from every woe,
Grant us Thy blessedness to know.

10 Help us to pass through death’s Red Sea
Turn Thou our heart, O Lord, to Thee,
That we escaping shame and sin
Unto the promised land may win.]

die Schwalb auch auf ihr Nestlein schaut,
also tracht ich nun ganz und gar,
Herr Jesu Christ, nach deim Altar.

2 Hilf mir,o Herr, durchs Jammerthal!
Gieb deinen Dienern überall,
daß sie dein Brünnlein leiten recht,
daß wir bhalten den Glauben schlecht. […recht]

3 Viel besser ist, in deiner Gmein
der Allergringst und wenigst sein,
denn sonst der Herrlichst in der Welt,
voll Reichthum, Glück, Ehr, Gut und Geld.

4 Du bist der Herr, Licht, Sonn und Schild,
giebst Gnad und Ehr, bist gut und mild.
Hilf, Herr, den Glauben in uns mehr
und unser Herz zu dir bekehr!
