Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ / daß du vom Tod

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ / daß du vom Tod . . ., an Easter hymn in three stanzas (melody: “Erschienen ist der herrlich Tag) by Thomas Hartmann, archdeacon of Eisleben. It originally appears with only the first two stanzas and no doxology in Hartmann’s Der kleine Christenschild . . . (1604), p. 37. Wackernagel notes that it is one of several hymns with the same first line, mentioning N. Selnecker’s “Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ, das du vom Tod erstanden bist: Daran stößt sich Teufel und Tod,” etc. However, only the first two lines echo Selnecker’s, the rest being entirely independent. It should also be distinguished from Christoph Fischer’s 4-stanza Passion hymn of the same first line, the second line continuing “daß du für uns gestorben bist,” translated by A. crull as “Lord Jesus, we give thanks to Thee / That Thou hast died to set us free”; Selnecker’s 5-stanza Evening hymn “Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ, daß du unser Erlöser bist”; the anon. 13-stanza Ascension hymn “Wir danken dir Herr Jesu Christ, / daß du gen Himmel gfahren bist / O starker Gott Immanuel”; J. C. Ruben’s 12-stanza Ascension hymn: “Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ, daß du nun aufgefahren bist”; and Helder’s 4-stanza Advent hymn: “Wir danken dir, Herr Jesu Christ, daß du vom Himmel kommen bist, / und hast als ein König gerecht.” (Fischer II, p. 395f.) The hymn appears in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch as #198, p. 101f.

WE thank Thee, O Lord Jesus Christ,
That from the dead Thou didst arise,
Death’s pow’r didst break forevermore,
And us to life again restore.

2 We pray Thee of Thy boundless grace
All our iniquity erase,
And with Thy goodness us endue,
That we may be Thy servants true.

3 To God the Father on the throne,
With His only begotten Son
