Wach auf, mein Herz, die Nacht ist hin

Here is my translation of the Easter hymn “Wach auf, mein Herz, die Nacht ist hin” (Laurentius Laurentii, 1700), appearing in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #194, and originating from Laurentii’s Evangelia melodica, where it is appointed for First Easter Day (according to the Lutheran usage, Christmas, Easter, and Pentecost were observed with three consecutive feast-days) and makes a nice application of the Easter Lesson. Having misread my records, I made the translation despite the existence of two others: Miss Alice Manington, “Wake up, my heart, the night has flown,” and J. Buckoll, “Rouse up, my heart, the night is o’er.” However, I find the former less faithful, and wanting in some parts, and the latter entirely unavailable except for its first line, so I do not count this a superfluous translation. The appointed melody is “Nun freut euch, lieben Christen gmein.”

 

AWAKE, my heart! The night is o’er,
The sun is now arisen!
This day the Savior burst death’s door
And left His stony prison,
Delight to all the world to bring,
So with thy mind and spirit spring
To welcome Christ the Savior!

2 Rise from the tomb of sin and death,
A new life duly living;
And finish well thy course of faith
And let thy heart be striving
To heaven, where Thy Jesus is
Seek that which is above, as His
True Christian, ris’n in spirit.

3 Forget what things behind thee lie,
And seek for what’s above thee,
And let thy heart e’er rise on high
To Jesus, who doth love thee.
Tread down the wicked world, and race
To reach the heav’nly dwelling place,
Where Jesus e’er abideth.

4 Though heavy stones of care annoy,
Thy Jesus will remove them;
All Christians can find peace and joy
E’en where their crosses prove them
Cast all thy cares on Him today;
Fret not, He is not far away
For He is now arisen.

5 Then to the tomb of Jesus go,
With those dear women faring
Who early leave (they love Him so),
Their gift of ointment bearing,
And thou shalt see that Christ did rise
From death today, no more He lies
Within the tomb’s dark chamber.

6 Today did Judah’s Lion gain
The vict’ry o’er damnation;
Today the Lamb of God once slain
For all mankind’s salvation
Brought righteousness and life to light,
For after conqu’ring in the fight
He led His foes in triumph.

7 So rise, my heart, and join the fight,
Christ’s vict’ry stands unshaken;
In thee He will prevail with might
For He all pow’r hath taken
From every foe, that thou may’st win,
And rise, and thy new life begin,
Thy God in true faith serving.

8 The devil, world, and hell may sneer
But shrink not nor be flighty,
For Jesus lives! There’s naught to fear!
He is the Champion mighty
Who wears the crown and doth uphold
The weak and least ones in the world;
So thou shalt be victorious.

9 O Christ my Lord, who to the light
From gloomy death art risen!
Save us from Satan’s guile and might
And from death’s awful prison
That we may all arise as one
And that new life may be begun
Which Thou for us hast gotten.

10 Be Thou adored by all God’s sons
In this world yet contending,
And by all those victorious ones
In glory never-ending,
Who overcame by Thy dear blood;
Lord Jesus, strength and courage good
To overcome, oh, grant us!

Wach auf, mein Herz! die Nacht ist hin,
die Sonn ist aufgegangen!
Ermuntre deinen Geist und Sinn,
den Heiland zu empfangen,
der heute aus des Todes Thür
gebrochen aus dem Grab herfür
der ganzen Welt zur Wonne.

2 Steh aus dem Grab der Sünden auf
und such ein neues Leben;
vollführe deinen Glaubenslauf
und laß dein Herz sich heben
gen Himmel, da dein Jesus ist,
und such was droben, als ein Christ,
der geistlich auferstanden.

3 Vergiß nun was dahinten ist,
und tracht nach dem, was droben,
damit dein Herz zu jeder Frist
zu Jesu sei erhoben.
Tritt unter dich die böse Welt
und strebe nach dem Himmelszelt,
wo Jesus ist zu finden.

4 Quällt dich ein schwerer Sorgenstein:
dein Jesus wird ihn heben;
es kann ein Christ bei Kreuzespein
in Freud und Wonne leben.
Wirf dein Anliegen auf den Herrn
und sorge nicht: er ist nicht fern,
weil er ist auferstanden.

5 Geh mit Maria Magdalen
und Salome zum Grabe,
die früh dahin aus Liebe gehn
mit ihrer Salbungsgabe;
so wirst du sehn, daß Jesus Christ
vom Tod heut auferstanden ist
und nicht im Grab zu finden.

6 Es hat der Löw aus Juda Stamm
heut siegreich überwunden,
und das erwürgte Gotteslamm
hat, uns zum Heil, erfunden
das Leben und Gerechtigkeit,
weil er nach überwundnem Streit
die Feinde Schau getragen.

7 Drum auf, mein Herz, fang an dem Streit,
weil Jesus überwunden:
er wird auch überwunden weit
in dir, weil er gebunden
der Feinde Macht, daß du aufstehst
und in ein neues Leben gehst
und Gott im Glauben dienest.

8 Scheu weder Teufel, Welt noch Lob,
noch gar der Hölle Rachen;
denn Jesus lebt, es hat kein Noth;
er ist noch bei den Schwachen
und den Geringsten in der Welt
als ein gekrönter Siegesheld;
drum wirst du überwinden.

9 Ach, mein Herr Jesu, der du bist
von Todten auferstanden,
rett uns aus Satans Macht und List
und aus des Todes Banden,
daß wir zusammen insgemein
zum neuen Leben gehen ein,
daß du uns hast erworben.

10 Sei hochgelobt in dieser Zeit
von allen Gotteskindern,
und ewig in der Herrlichkeit
von allen Überwindern,
die überwunden durch dein Blut:
Herr Jesu, gieb uns Kraft und Muth,
daß wir auch überwinden.
