Herr Gott, du hast ein Gnadenreich

Here is my translation of the Church hymn, “Herr Gott, du hast ein Gnadenreich” (Georg Österreicher, d. 1621), appearing in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #237. It is not in Fischer’s Kirchenl.-lexicon. In the Psalm-singede und Lobegesängspielende Kirche Christi (Windsheim, 1704), however, I find it in a group of related hymns (all asc. to Österreicher) expounding the petitions of the Lord’s Prayer, the present hymn for the Second Petition. In order they are: (1) O treuer Gott ins Himmels Thron (wie theur ist deine Güte), (2) Herr Gott, du hast ein Gnadenreich, (3) Herr Gott, dein Sohn hast du dahin, (4) Dich bitten wir, o reicher Gott, (5) O Vater, dein Barmherzigkeit, (6) Ach, wie sind wir so arme Leut, (7) Wer alles Unglück recht betracht. All are sung to the same melody, “Ich ruf zu dir, Herr Jesu Christ,” and all have three stanzas but the first, which has four. Wetzel, Analecta II, p. 577ff., confirms the ascription to Österreicher, referencing his Cantor-Büchlein (1615) as the source of his hymns.

 

 

A GRACIOUS kingdom, God our Lord,
Thou hast by Jesus founded,
And pledged its subjects by Thy Word
And Baptism’s grace unbounded.
Thy church and heirs they are to be,
Devoted to Thee wholly,
Living solely
As pleasing is to Thee,
And keeping Thy Word alway.

2 This kingdom Satan doth assail,
And gladly would devour it.
Come with Thy help, that he may fail
And may not overpow’r it.
Destroy his horde, Almighty Lord!
And all who would endeavor
Us to sever
From Thee and from Thy Word,
And break their efforts ever!

3 Thy kingdom come to us with might,
All men its sound discerning,
Thy Word within our hearts cleave tight
And like a fire be burning!
Here with Thy Spirit still abide;
Let Him to faith restore us,
Go before us,
And from this kingdom guide
Into that kingdom glorious.

Herr Gott! du hast ein Gnadenreich
durch Christum aufgerichtet,
und durch die Tauf und Wort zugleich
ein Häuflein dir verpflichtet:
das soll dein Erb und Kirchlein sein,
von Herzen sich ergeben,
dir zu leben
nach all dem Willen dein,
dein Wort zu halten eben.

2 Solchs fichtet an des Teufels Heer,
und will es ja verschlingen.
Komm du mit deiner Hülf und Wehr,
daß ihm nicht mög gelingen:
zerstör sein macht, du starker Hort!
und all, die sich bemühen
uns zu ziehen
von dir und deinem Wort,
zerstöre ihr Bemühen.

3 Gieb, daß dein Reich mit großer Kraft
zu uns komm und erschalle,
dein Wort in unsern Herzen haft
und brünstiglich aufwalle!
Mit deinem Geist von uns nicht weich,
der uns den Glauben mehre,
leit und lehre,
und durch das Gnadenreich
uns führ ins Reich der Ehre.
