Here is my translation of the Church hymn “Gleichwie sein Haus der Vogel baut” (Nicolaus Selnecker, d. 1592), as it appears in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #264, along with the omitted stanzas from the 10-stanza version originally published in the author’s Geistliche Psalmen (1587) with the title “For Preservation in God’s Word: from the 84th Psalm.” It was originally appointed to be sung to “Mensch willt du leben seliglich” with “Kyrioleis” after each stanza, presumably dividing the first slur of the last line to accommodate a full eight syllables. In later use, however, the melody “Erhalt uns, Herr, bei deinem Wort” was appointed and the Kyrioleis omitted.
LIKE as the sparrow builds his home,
The swallow to her nest doth come,
So do I seek with heart sincere,
Lord Jesus Christ, Thy altar dear.
2 Through sorrow’s valley help me, Lord!
Thy servants everywhere afford,
That Thy blest fount may be maintained
And we preserve the faith unstained.
3 Far better ’tis to be the least
In Thy assembly, at Thy feast,
Than worldly glory to possess
with wealth, goods, money, fame, success.
4 Thou, Lord, my Light, my Sun, my Shield,
Rich blessings graciously dost yield;
