Ich steh an deinem Kreuze hier

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Ich steh an deinem Kreuze hier” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, first series, for Judica. The title is likely a reference to Gerhardt’s Christmas hymn, “Ich steh an deiner Krippen hier.”

Mel.: Herr Jesu Christ, du höchstes Gut.

I STAND before Thy cross adored,

To learn and trust true-hearted;

From Thee and from Thy grace, O Lord,

Let me by naught be parted.

For if Thy strength perform it not,

Relief in Thee is vainly sought

By flesh and blood so pow’rless.

2 This I believe, and so am filled

With never-ending gladness,

That, Savior, Thou for me hast willed

To bear all pain and sadness.

I see my sins all clustered here

Upon Thy back a burden drear,

Since Thou wilt expiate them.

3 I feel as if I, thusly graced,

Hung on the cross upon Thee,

And God, appeased, hath me embraced

In love, as He hath done Thee;

For all Thy merits now are mine.

And so all that Thou, Lord divine,

Hast won, is my possession!

4 Since Thou my dear Redeemer art,

No cause for condemnation

Is found for me, I trust at heart,

For in Thy blood’s oblation

True righteousness Thou givest me,

Which in the judgment sets me free

From guilt and retribution.

5 Indeed I trust most certainly

Were I from sin not loosèd,

Another death to set me free

Thou wouldst not have refusèd;

Yet nothing lacks, for here Thou hast

Made satisfaction to the last,

Which merit counts forever.

6 Let me according to Thy grace,

Of Thee be also learning,

And follow Thee with patient pace

And love, no suff’ring spurning.

Upon me lay the yoke of cross,

But lend Thy strength, through joy and loss

To bear it without stumbling.

7 Let me, as Thou hast done for us,

Treat gently those who smite me

With wicked words and blasphemous;

And bless my cursers rightly;

Yea, let me for my rivals pray,

As Thou didst in Thy heartfelt way,

O Friend of every mortal!

8 All this, Lord, as Thou knowest well,

Imperfect here remaineth,

Yet if the Holy Ghost to dwell

Within my heart now deigneth,

The imperfection for its dress

Shall have thy perfect righteousness,

Which Thou to me imputest.

9 Then let me thus with constancy

Be living and believing,

Till I the image clear of Thee,

Dear Savior, am perceiving.

As true as was Thy suff’ring then,

So truly art Thou ris’n again,

So true is my salvation!

Ich steh an deinem Kreuze hier,

zu gläuben und zu lernen.

Laß nichts, o Jesu, mich von dir

und deinen Gnad entfernen.

Denn wo es deine Kraft nicht thut,

so kann mein eigen Fleisch und Blut

sich deiner nicht getrösten.

2 Ich gläube dann, und bin erfüllt

dadurch mit großen Freuden,

daß du, mein Heiland, alles willt

um meinet willen leiden.

Ich sehe meine Sünden hier;

die liegen alle da auf dir,

daß du dafür willt bußen.

3 Mir ist nicht anders, als ob ich

mit dir am Kreuze hienge,

und der versöhnte Gott auch mich,

wie dich, mit Lieb umfienge.

Denn dein Verdienst ist alles mein.

So muß auch das mein eigen sein,

was du damit erworben.

4 Weil du nun mein Erlöser bist,

gläub ich mit festem Muthe,

daß nichts an mir verdammlich ist.

In deinem theuren Blute

hab ich vor Gott Gerechtigkeit,

die im Gerichte mich befreit

von aller Schuld und Strafe.

5 Fürwahr ich gläube sicherlich,

wär ich nicht los von Sünden,

du stürbest noch einmal für mich,

mich völlig zu entbinden.

So aber fehlet nichts daran.

Vollkommen hast du gnug gethan,

und solch Verdienst gilt ewig.

6 Gieb, Jesu, gieb nach deiner Huld,

daß ich auch von dir lerne,

und dir mit LIeb und mit Geduld

im Leiden folge gerne.

LEgst du ein Joch des Kreuzes auf,

so lege so viel Kraft mir drauf,

daß ich es könne tragen.

7 Laß mich, wie du es dargelegt,

mit Sanfmuth dem begegnen,

der mich mit Lästerworten schlägt;

und meinen Flucher segnen.

Ja gieb, daß ich für meinen Feind,

wie du, o aller Menschen Freund,

von Herzen möge beten.

8 Dies alles zwar, wie du wohl weißt,

wird unvollkommen bleiben;

doch wird mich nur dein guter Geist

in meinem Herzen treiben;

so wrid die Unvollkommenheit

jedennoch durch Gerechtigkeit,

die du mir schenkst, bedecket.

9 Wohlan, laß mich beständiglich

so gläuben und so leben,

bis du, mein liebster Heiland, dich

mir wirst im Schauen geben.

Ach ja, so wahr dein Leiden ist,

so wahr du auferstanden bist,
so wahr werd ich auch selig!

Ach wie betrübt sind fromme Seelen! / wie ängstet sie die böse Welt

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Ach wie betrübt sind fromme Seelen! / wie ängstet sie die böse Welt” (E. Neumeister, 1710), from the author’s Zugang zum Gnadenstuhl, first series, for Judica. The hymn is likely based on the Anon. 17th c. hymn, of the same first line. Perhaps on this account the aforesaid book assigns the melody “Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten,” used by that anon. hymn, though this only seems to fit the first stanza—which may have had the last two endings contracted in attempt to fit, but this was later neglected. While “Wer nur” seems sometimes, in consideration of its familiarity, to have been used for this meter, by an appropriate division of the last notes of the last two lines, I here suggest a few melodies in the correct meter which were published before Neumeister’s hymn.

Mel.: Ach, Herr, warum wirst du so ferne;
Or: Welt, tobe, wie du willst, und wüte;
Or: Mein Jesu, hier sind deine Brüder.

HOW troubled are the souls believing,

How harried by the wicked world!

Who can count up the hours of grieving,

When suff’ring on their head is hurled?

And when their eyes, their sorrow showing,

With bitter tears are overflowing,

2 Indeed, their life’s a path of crosses,

Filled with all trials and distress,

The sea of fear and anguish tosses

Before their eyes—oh, bitterness,

To grasp the weight of tribulations

And bear it all with holy patience!

3 Whenever lying tongues revile us,

And lash us till the blood doth flow,

When they with sland’rous words defile us,

Then well the pain we feel and know

Of holding back our cries and fretting,

Our shame and griefs to be forgetting.

4 This seal hath those as Christians living:

“In persecution patience e’er!”

Here Christ Himself, the pattern giving,

Doth innocent His suff’ring bear.

Who’er would be His member namèd,

He must confess it unashamèd.

5 Content thee with His kindness for us,

Which never ceases nor grows old;

At last must innocence, victorious,

Serve for thy shield, herein be bold;

God sees, God shall avenge completely,

And give the end that pleases sweetly.

6 Then rave, ye foes, in godless fever!

My hope in God I firmly place.

He is my friend and help forever,

Who hath redemed me from disgrace

What want I more, who for brief sadness

The crown inherit of His gladness!

GERMAN

Ach wie betrübt sind fromme Seelen!

Wie ängstet sie die böse Welt!

Wer mag die Stunden alle zählen,

da sie ein Leiden überfällt?

Und da die Augen trübe stehn,

wenn sie mit Thränen übergehn?

2 Ach ja! es muß ihr ganzes LEben

ein trübsalsvoller Kreuzweg sein,

wo Furcht und Angst vor Augen schweben.

Und ach! da gehets bitter ein,

wenn man die Last von allen Plagen

beherzt und mit Geduld soll tragen.

3 Wenn uns die falschen Zungen schmähen,

und geißeln uns bis auf das Blut;

wenn man sich muß verspottet sehen;

5 Laß dir an seiner Huld begnügen.

Die höret nimmermehr nicht auf.

Die Unschuld muß zuletzt doch siegen,

die ist dein Schild, da trotze drauf.

Gott siehts, Gott wird auch alles rächen,

und dich gewünscht zufrieden sprechen.

6 So redet immerhin, ihr Feinde!

tobt immerhin. Ich bin getröst.

Ich habe meinen Gott zum Freunde,

der mich aus aller Schmach erlöst.

Was will ich mehr? für zeiglich Leiden

erb ich die Krone seiner Freuden.

Wer Jesum recht erkennet

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wer Jesum recht erkennet” (L. Laurentii, 1700), from the author’s Evangelia Melodica, for Judica, the first hymn.

Mel.: Von Gott will ich nicht lassen.

WHO Jesus rightly knoweth

And, as a Christian, bears

His name where’er he goeth,

His lonely path he shares,

And follows as he should

In all his life’s endeavor,

And surely fighteth never

Against his highest Good.

2 ’Tis not in man’s possession,

With Jesus to declare

Himself without transgression;

Of this let all despair,

And rather seek and find

With all our strength and power

In all our living hour

To have the Savior’s mind.

3 So may we not be shamèd

By all the worldly host,

Nor we, who Christ’s are namèd,

May lose our sacred boast

O’er Jews and pagans all,

Nor deal with worse transgressions

Than Turks and heathen nations

And lose our Christ withal.

4 When He the truth declareth,

Men will believe Him not;

And who here never careth,

Doth not what He hath taught.

The truth men scorn and flout,

And none of them will hear it

Taught by those who revere it;

They quickly are cast out.

5 Thus he the truth who writeth

and speaks, will suspect stand;

Who in God’s works delighteth

And teacheth, soon is banned.

The world is deaf and blind;

They will not give attention,

Nor hear with comprehension,

That they true faith may find.

6 They make of Jesus’ teaching

A mock’ry, scorn, and fraud,

Can hear not Scripture-preaching,

For they are not of God.

In curse they live and lie;

The Word of life is fruitless

With them, remaining rootless—

A book sealed to their eye.

7 Who is not God’s baptizèd,

He heareth not His Word,

In vain is realizèd

All teaching he hath heard.

He speaks the truth hereof,

Who all things taught most rightly,

And yet was heard but slightly—

The Son of God above.

8 O man, be not so blinded,

But take it now to heart,

And be not reckless-minded,

For near thine end thou art.

Art thou not born of God,

Then thou must surely perish,

And lose all thou dost cherish.

So hear what Christ doth laud.

9 Lord Jesus, let me clearly

Perceive the truth, Thy Word,

And treasure that most dearly,

And henceforth undeterred

Walk ever in Thy way

With holy conversation,

And own my obligation

Until the final day.

GERMAN

Wer Jesum recht erkennet,

und sich als einen Christ

von seinem Namen nennet,

der muß zu jeder Frist,

in allen, was er thut,

ihm folgen in dem Leben,

und ja nicht widerstreben

dem allerhöchsten Gut.

2 Ob zwar kein Mensch zu finden,

der Jesu spreche nach,

wer ist, der einer Sünden

zu zeihen mir vermag?

So soll man doch dahin,

mit allen Kräften streben,

daß man im ganzen Leben,

mög haben Christi Sinn.

3 Damit uns nicht beschäme,

das Volk, das draußen ist,

und nicht den Ruhm benehme,

die wir den Namen Christ

für Jud- und Heiden führn,

und doch oft schlechter handeln,

als Türk und Heiden wandeln,

und Christum gar verliern.

4 Wenn er die Wahrheit saget,

so glaubet man ihm nicht,

und wer hier nicht nachfraget,

der thut nicht, was er spricht,

die Wahrheit ist verhaßt,

und will sie keiner hören,

die sie mit Nachdruck lehren,

die sind verworfen fast,

5 Wer jetzt die Wahrheit schreibet,

und sagt, ist in Verdacht;

wer Gottes Werk recht treibet

mit Macht, der ist veracht,

die Welt ist blind und taub,

und stumm, und will nicht sehen,

nicht hören noch verstehen,

was sei der wahre Glaub.

6 Sie macht von Christi Lehren

Verachtung, Hohn und Spott,

und kann das Wort nicht hören,

weil sie nicht ist von Gott,

sie liegt und lebt im Fluch,

drum ist bei ihr vergebens,

das süße Wort des Lebens,

und ein versiegelt Buch.

7 Wer nicht aus Gott geboren,

der höret nicht sein Wort,

es ist an ihm verloren

das Lehren fort und fort.

Die Wahrheit spricht hievon,

der alles recht gelehret

und doch nicht werd gehöret,

des allerhöchsten Sohn.

8 O Mensch, nimms doch zu Herzen,

und sei nicht mehr verblendt.

Es läßt sich hier nicht scherzen,

es nahet sich dein End,

wirst du geboren nicht

aus Gott, so mußt du sterben

und jämmerlich verderben,

drum hör, was Jesus spricht.

9 Herr JEsu, laß mich hören

die Wahrheit, und dein Wort,

für alle Schätze ehren,

und nichtes mehr hinfort

Verlangen, als darnach,

mein Leben einzurichten,

und dir mich zu verpflichten,

bis an den jüngsten Tag.
