Erschienen ist der Freudentag

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Erschienen ist der Freudentag” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst for Whitsunday,

Mel.: Erschienen ist der herrlich Tag.

NOW doth the Day of Joy appear,
For which no man enough can cheer;
God sent His Spirit on this day,
To show to us the heav’nly way.
Alleluia!

2 What was today seen long ago
Is for our comfort here below,
To us God still His Spirit sends,
And as our Comforter commends.
Alleluia!

3 He by whom every tongue was learned
And to Himself the heathen turned,
Still teacheth now His Christians dear
At every hour, both far and near.
Alleluia!

4 As then the stranger stood amazed,
God’s pow’r is still in churches praised,
Throughout the world her line is gone,
The Word our heav’nly life bestows.
Alleluia!

GERMAN

Erschienen ist der Freudentag,
dran sich kein Mensch gnug freuen mag,
heut sendet uns Gott seinen Geist,
der uns den Weg zum Himmel weist.
Hallelujah.

2 Was heut vor langer Zeit gesehn,
das ist auch uns zum Trost geschehn,
Gott schenkt uns euch noch seinen Geist,
der unser höchster Tröster heißt.
Hallelujah.

3 Der alle Sprachen selbst gelehrt,
die Heiden hat zu sich bekehrt,
der lehrt auch noch zu jederzeit
die ganze werthe Christenheit.’
Hallelujah.

4 Wie dort der Fremdling sich entsetzt,
so wird noch jetzt die Kirch ergetzt,
die Predigt geht durch alle Welt,
was Wort bringt uns ins Himmels Zelt.
Hallelujah.

Wie soll ich mein Gott dir danken?

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wie soll ich mein Gott dir danken?” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst for the feast of Pentecost, based on the Gospel for Whitsunday. His other hymns for the occasion there are “Freuet euch, ihr Gotteskinder / freuet euch ihr Christen all” and “Laß mich, o treuer Gott,” which are found translated on this blog.

Mel.: Ach, was soll ich Sünder machen.

O MY God, how shall I thank Thee,
Who Thy love and mercy true
Ever daily dost renew?
Oh, what joy for seasons lengthy
Spirit, mind, and heart possess
In Thy love and graciousness!

2 ’Twas Thy love my Comfort gave me,
And my Mercy-seat alone—
Jesus, Thy beloved Son;
’Tis Thy love that still to save me,
Gives me faith and constancy,
That I live eternally.

GERMAN

Wie soll ich mein Gott dir danken?
Deine große Lieb und Treu
ist mir ewig immer neu,
dein Herz, mein Geist und Gedanken
freuen sich zu aller Zeit
deiner Lieb und Gütigkeit.

2 Deine Lieb hat mir gegeben
deinen allerliebsten Sohn,
meinen Trost und Gnadenthron;
deine Lieb schenkt mir das Leben,
daß ich glaub beständiglich,
daß ich lebe ewiglich.

So seid nur mäßig jederzeit

Here is my translation of the hymn, “So seid nur mäßig jederzeit” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst, the Epistle paraphrase for Exaudi Sunday, from 1 Peter 4.

Mel.: Herr Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht.

BRETHREN, be mod’rate and prepare,
Soberly watching unto pray’r;
Pure charity have t’ward all men;
For that shall cover many a sin

2 Grudge not your hospitality,
Let each the other’s servant be,
That all may be by gifts relieved,
As each man hath of God received.

3 Thus be the stewards of God’s grace,
Disposed aright to time and place.
Whoever speaks, let him speak not,
But as the Word of God hath taught.

4 Who hath an office, let him do
In all estates his office true.
Of the ability bestowed
And wrought within us by our God.

5 That in all things our Maker we
May glorify continually,
Through Jesus Christ, to whom all praise,
Pow’r, and dominion be always.

Translation © 2026 Matthew Carver.

GERMAN

So seid nur mäßig jederzeit
und nüchtern zum Gebet bereit,
die Liebe sei stets unbefleckt,
die Lieb der Sünden Menge deckt.

2 Ohn Murmeln sollt ihr gastfrei sein,
einander dienen in gemein

in allen Ständen ingesamt
aus dem Vermögen und der Kraft,
die Gott darreicht und in uns schafft.

5 Auf daß in allen Dingen wir
Gott immer preisen für und für
durch Jesum Christ, dem ist bereit
Ehr und Gewalt in Ewigkeit.

Mein Gott, dir ist unverborgen

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Mein Gott, dir ist unverborgen” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst, for Exaudi Sunday.

Mel.: Ach was soll ich Sünder machen.

O MY God, ’tis not concealèd
From Thy sight what dire distress
And what griefs Thy flock oppress!
All my tears have been revealèd,
All my sorrows and my sighs—
All appear before Thine eyes.

2 Thy most holy truth must suffer,
While its persecutors boast,
And in anguish sighs Thy host.
For Thy truth the world doth proffer
Terror, slaughter, hatred, spite,
Poorness, mis’ry, scorn, and slight.

3 Rise, my God, and loose Thy thunder!
Show Thou art our Helper true,
Who forgettest not Thy few;
Let the foe not trample under
With the sword Thy Word divine,
Nor with cunning undermine.

4 Keep Thy sheep, let nothing shake us,
Let Thy Word of truth be e’er
Our salvation here and there.
Suffer naught from Thee to take us,
Guard Thy people mightily,
Let us ever boast of Thee!

Translation © 2026 Matthew Carver.

GERMAN

Mein Gott, dir ist unverborgen,
wie dein Häuflein bis in Tod
drückt so gar viel Angst und Noth,
du weißt alle meine Sorgen,
meine Seufzer, mein Begier,
meine Thränen sind vor dir.

2 Deine Wahrheit muß sich leiden,
die Verfolger rühmen sich,
dein Volk seufzet ängstiglich,
Schrecken, Würgen, Hassen, Neiden,
Armuth, Elend, Schmach und Hohn,
ist ja deiner Wahrheit Lohn.

3 Stehe auf mein Gott, laß sehen,
daß du unser Helfer bist,
der der Seinen nicht vergißt,
laß ja nimmermehr geschehen,
daß des Satans List und Mord
unterdrückt dein göttlich Wort.

4 Laß uns deine Schäfflein bleiben,
laß uns deiner Wahrheit Wort
selig machen hier und dort,
laß uns nichts von dir abtreiben,
schütz uns dein Volk mächtiglich,
laß uns rühmen ewiglich. Amen.

Herr mein Gott, ich will dich preisen

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Herr mein Gott, ich will dich preisen” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst, for Cantate Sunday.

Mel.: Ach was soll ich Sünder machen.

LORD my God, I laud and praise Thee,
And for all Thy mercies free,
Mighty pow’r, and majesty,
With which Thou dost e’er amaze me,
Thee forever here adore,
And in heaven evermore.

2 What Thy Son for me obtainèd,
When He poured His precious blood
Freely, gladly, for my good,
And the cross and death sustainèd—
I from Thy dear Spirit learn,
And the Way to heav’n discern.

3 Lord, Thy Truth must stand unshaken,
Evermore Thy Word remains
And with might the vict’ry gains.
Lies must all away be taken,
No unrighteousness shall stay,
Pride and envy pass away.

4 This world’s prince in ruin lieth,
Razed, his kingdom, wall, and tow’r,
Vain is all his craft and pow’r,
Truth God keeps, and him defieth,
Truth no fear of peril hath,
Firm abiding e’en to death.

5 Let Thy truth direct and guide me,
Help me by Thy Spirit glad,
By whom help in need is had,
Strong to stand when foes deride me,
To o’ercome them valiantly,
And fore’er to worship Thee.

GERMAN

Herr mein Gott, ich will dich preisen,
ich will deine Gütigkeit,
deine Macht und Herrlichkeit,
die du mir stets thut erweisen,
rühmen hier zu aller Zeit
und in alle Ewigkeit.

2 Was dein Sohn mir hat erworben,
da er selbst sein theures Blut
hat vergossen mir zu gut,
als er ist am Kreuz gestorben,
lehret mich dein werther Geist,
der den Weg zum Himmel weist.

3 Deine Wahrheit muß bestehen,
dein Wort bleibet ewiglich,
dein Wort siegt gewaltiglich,
alle Lügen muß vergehen,
alle Ungerechtigkeit,
aller Welt Trutz, Haß und Neid.

4 Weil der Weltfürst selbst erleget,
weil sein Reich gestürmet ist,
ist umsonst sein Macht und List,
Wahrheit wird von Gott geheget,
Wahrheit scheuet keine Noth,
bleibt beständig bis in Tod.

5 Laß mich deine Wahrheit leiten,
hilf durch deinen Freudengeist,
der mir treulich Beistand leist,
deiner Feinde Macht bestreiten,
laß mich siegen ritterlich
und dich preisen ewiglich. Amen!

Mein Jesus ist der gute Hirt

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Mein Jesus ist der gute Hirt” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst for Misericordias Domini. The melody there indicated, “Wenn Gott der Herr nicht bei uns hält” (with note: “The last [part of] the melody is repeated”) seems unsatisfactory, especially since the meter is supported by the well-known chorale, “Was mein Gott will, das gscheh allzeit.” This is a repeated problem in the book, and is perhaps the result of an inept editor.

The question of authorship here arises, since Fischer/Tümpel (Das deutsche ev. Kirchenlied…, 1911, vol 5, p. 571) gives the text under the Fruitbearing Society member, “Der Spate,” Caspar Stieler (1632–1707) from his book INI Jesus-Schall und Wiederhall… (1684), notably later than Olearius’s publication. However, the editor notes, “The foregoing melody, ‘Es ist das Heil’ does not fit; the correct one is ‘Was mein Gott will…’ — Whether Stieler composed the above hymn and the following is uncertain.”) Here we can safely ascribe the authorship to Olearius, and simultaneously find confirmation of the melodic problem, no doubt arising from an incautious editor, and its solution.

Mel.: Was mein Gott will, das gscheh allzeit.

CHRIST is my Shepherd good and true,

My God, my heart’s delighting!

He keeps me safe and leads me through

All cross and grief affrighting;

He is with me / continually,

No pow’r this union cleaveth;

For mine He is, / and I am His,

Who me in joy receiveth.

2 He is my Shield, my Life, my Light,

My Hope and Consolation,

My Good, my Portion day and night,

My All, and my Salvation;

At every hour / His helping pow’r

In all my needs attendeth;

He faithfully / provides for me,

And every ill amendeth.

3 Praise, laud, and honor evermore

With joy I’ll sing before Thee,

Thy faithfulness and grace adore,

And ever sound Thy glory,

Alone ’tis Thine, / O King divine,

Oh, in Thy kingdom ever

Let me abide, / joined to Thy side!

Thou shalt deny me never!

Laß mich, mein Gott, dein Wort

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Laß mich, mein Gott, dein Wort” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst, for Quasimodogeniti.

Mel.: O Jesu, Gottes Lamm.

MY God, let Thy dear Word

 forever rule and guide me,

Thy Spirit be my stay

 before me and beside me.

Thy Word, the truth, gives balm

 and quick’ning on life’s road,

So that my heart faints not

 beneath the cross’s load

2 Thy Son all guilt doth bear,

His peace to me is given.

Why doubt then, since Thou dost

swear life to me, and heaven.

Christ says: “The sinner’s death

 I never once would see.

Come unto Me! I am

the Door of grace for thee:—

3 “My Spirit, Baptism, Word,

 My Body, Blood, life-power

Is all thine own! Let these

 console thee every hour,

In all thy sorrows thou

 art yet My child, My own;

Therefore take heart, thy faith

 doth hold the heav’nly throne.”

4 Thanks be to God most High,

 who gives me consolation

Dispelling all distress

 and cause of tribulation!

How then shall I be sad,

 since God doth drive away

My woes, and quick’ning gives

 until my dying day.

5 All glory, praise, and laud

 be Thine, my God, forever,

For all Thy grace and love,

 Thy faithfulness, and favor,

Who quick’ning kindly giv’st.

 Let me be graciously

Kept in this comfort, and

 Forever worship Thee.

GERMAN

Laß mich, mein Gott, dein Wort

zu aller Zeit regieren,

laß deinen werthen Geist

auf rechten Bahn mich führen,

dein Wort ist Wahrheit, die

mich tröstet und erquickt,

daß unter Kreuzeslast

mein Herze nicht erstickt.

2 Dein Sohn trägt alle Schuld,

sein Fried ist mir gegeben,

wie sollt ich zweifeln, weil

du mir versprichst das Leben?

Ich will des Sünders Tod

gar nicht kommt her zu mir

spricht Jesus, kommt, ich bin

die rechte Gnadenthür.

3 Mein Geist, mein Wort, mein Tauf,

mein Leib, mein Blut, mein Leben,

ist alles dein, den Trost

laß dir im Herzen schweben,

in aller Traurigkeit,

du bist mein lieber Sohn,

drum sei getrost, dein Glaub

ergreift den Himmelsthron.

4 Dank sei dem höchsten Gott,

der mir den Trost geschenket,

der alle Noth vertreibt,

und alles, was mich kränket,

wie könnt ich traurig sein,

weil mein Gott meine Noth

vertreibt und mich erquickt

im Leben und im Tod?

5 Lob, Preis und Ehr sei dir

mein Gott, vor dein Güte,

vor deine Lieb und True,

die mein Herz und Gemüthe

so väterlich erquickt,

erhalt mich gnädiglich

bei solchem Trost, daß ich

dich lobe ewiglich.

Amen.

Hilf Gott! wie muß sich doch leiden *

Here is my second translation of “Hilf Gott! wie muß sich doch leiden” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst for Judica. The previous translation, posted here in 2023, was based on a slightly amended text from Ohio. This version is from the author’s original text. Interestingly, the melody assignment, as so often in this book, is “Ach was soll ich Sünder machen” with the note “The last melody is repeated.” These might be notes supplied by an amanuensis or publisher rather than Olearius himself. The meter is clearly that of “Freu dich sehr” or “Werde munter.” I suggest the first or “Der am Kreuz,” which, though anachronistic, is quite fitting.

Mel.: Freu dich sehr, o meine Seele;

Or: Der am Kreuz ist meine Liebe.

GOD, how must Thy truth be ever

Made to suffer year by year!

How the world and devil never

Cease to vex Thy people dear,

Sowing lies whene’er Thy Word

And Thy truth go undeterred,

O’er the world, that all may hear it,

Fighting ’gainst the lying spirit.

2 Now Thy Son hath borne affliction,

Mock’ry, falsehood, wrong, and scorn,

Blows and stripes and crucifixion

Thus men thanked Thy truth forlorn.

Yet because He fights the foe,

Laying earth’s dread tyrant low,

Truth abideth to this hour,

Nor can fall to any power.

3 Yes, Thy truth shall stand unfailing,

When the world must turn to dust,

Firm remains Thy Word availing;

Blest are they therein who trust.

Who hath built upon this ground

And to God alone is bound,

Can o’ercome with jubilation,

Yea, in death he finds salvation.

GERMAN

Hilf Gott! wie muß sich doch leiden

deine Wahrheit immerdar,

wie gar heftig pflegt zu neiden

Welt und Teufel deine Schar,

wie tobt Lügen, wenn dein Wort,

deine Wahrheit immerfort

sich will immer mehr ausbreiten

und den Lügengeist bestreiten?

2 Nun dein Sohn hat selbst empfunden

Unrecht, Lügen, Spott und Hohn,

Schläge, Marter, Kreuz und Wunden

war der Wahrheit Dank und Lohn,

doch weil er den Feind bekriegt,

dem Weltfürsten obgesiegt,

muß die Wahrheit dennoch bleiben

keine Macht kann sie vertreiben.

3 Deine Wahrheit wird bestehen,

mein Gott, dein Wort bleibet fest,

wenn die Welt muß untergehen,

wohl dem, der sich drauf verläßt,

wer auf diesen Grund gebaut,

und nur seinem Gott vertraut,

der kann fröhlich überwinden,

ja im Tod das Leben finden. Amen!

Ich trau auf Gott zu aller Zeit

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Ich trau auf Gott zu aller Zeit” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst, for Laetare. The assigned melody in that book (in which a number melodies are unfortunately unfit for the texts) is “Erschienen ist,” but the meter is properly 88.99, but with contraction of the final syllables it can be made to fit LM. I have therefore constructed the translation so as to fit either meter, with the Jacobean -eth being contracted to -s as required. The classic 88.99 melody is “Old 9th” (Geneva Psalm 9), which, perhaps significantly, like “Erschienen ist,” begins with three notes on the same pitch and then leaps up a fifth (in the first examples here, both D D D A). Melodies for the meter were later composed by Hintze and perhaps S. Bach.

Mel.: Erschienen ist der herrlich Tag;
Or: Ich will dich Herr von Herzensgrund
Or: Auf, auf, die rechte Zeit ist hier.

I TRUST in God at every hour,
Who ready stands to help with pow’r.
My God of few soon many maketh,
And in all things to help awaketh.

2 However hard th’ adversity
I here must bear by land or sea,
I know that God all ills amendeth,
And in all things with help attendeth.

3 He who doth in His Word to me
Proclaim such works of majesty
Doth teach me that He hath the power
To help e’en in the direst hour.

4 Oft reason saith with sense untrue:
“Among so many what are few?”
Yet God of few soon many maketh,
And from all ill great good awaketh.

5 Since Jesus is the God-Man true,
Who soon makes many out of few,
My comfort’s this: He soon amendeth
And in all things with help attendeth.

spricht, was soll wenig unter viel?
Doch kann Gott viel aus wenig machen,
und bessern alle böse Sachen.

5 Weil denn nun Jesus ist der Mann,
der viel aus wenig machen kann,
bleibt dies mein Trost: Er wirds wohl machen,
und helfen allen meinen Sachen. Amen.

Wir bitten euch noch mehr

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Wir bitten euch noch mehr” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst, for Reminiscere, a paraphrase of the Epistle, 1 Thess. 4:1–7.

Mel.: O Jesu, Gottes Lamm.

ONCE more we you beseech,
Receive our exhortation
Which in the Lord we make,
To flee from all transgression,
And walk as pleaseth God,
And as ye justly ought,
In godliness increase,
Lest ye astray be brought.

2 This is the will of God,
Be sanctified, abstaining
From fornication’s vice,
All carnal lust disdaining,
And Gentiles’ blinded ways
Who know not God the Lord,
But live as senseless beasts.
Disgrace is their reward.

3 Let every one of you
Possess his vessel holy,
In honor—old and young,
Great lord and peasant lowly.
Let no man go beyond,
But live upright and just.
He erreth who defrauds
And breaks his brother’s trust.

4 For know, the Lord our God
Is of all sins th’ Avenger,
As oft ye have been told,
They bring great threat and danger.
For God hath called us not
To filth and things unclean,
But (as He holy is)
To holiness pristine.

GERMAN

Wir bitten euch noch mehr,
laß unser Wort Statt finden,
denn wir vermahnen euch
im Herrn, flieht alle Sünden,
und wandelt wie es Gott
gefällt, wie sichs gebührt,
‘seid immer frömmer, seht,
daß ihr nicht werdt verführt.

2 Denn das ist Gottes Will,
seid heilig, daß ihr meidet
die Schand und Hurerei
und nicht Lustseuche leidet
noch blinder Heiden Arth,
die wissen nichts von Gott,
und leben als das Vieh,
ihr Lohn ist Schmach und Spott.

3 Ein jeder unter euch
soll sein Faß rein behalten
in Ehr und Heiligkeit,
die Jungen samt den Alten,
es greife niemand nicht
zu weit, lebt recht und schlecht,
der Handels Vortheil an
dem Bruder ist nicht recht.

4 Denn der HErr unser Gott
ist Rächer aller Sünden,
es ist euch oft gesagt,
die Strafe wird sich finden,
Gott hat uns nicht beruft
zu der Unreinigkeit,
der allein heilig ist,
ruft uns zur Heiligkeit.

Was pochst du doch, du arger Feind

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Was pochst du doch, du arger Feind” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst for Invocavit.

Mel.: Ich hab mein Sach Gott heimgestellt.

WHY glory thus, O wicked foe,
That the ungodly flourish so
And harmful ills, which by thy pow’r
And craft each hour
Are helped, that they might us devour?

2 Know’st not, that with us is the Lord,
The Man, who with one little Word
Can still thy boasting suddenly —
My God is He,
Who turneth all to good for me.

3 Who can be ’gainst me? Be it known,
God is with me; in Him alone
At every hour I will confide,
Since for His bride
His help doth ready e’er abide.

4 Defeated lies the serpent’s head;
There is, praise God, no cause for dread.
God’s mighty arm doth me embrace;
O wondrous grace
That God hath set before my face!

5 Lord Jesus Christ, my Rock and Tow’r,
Cast down the devil’s craft and pow’r!
I am but dust if not for Thee;
My God, help me
From trouble and death’s agony!

GERMAN

Was pochst du doch, du arger Feind,

Mein Gott, mein Schutz,
der alles schickt zu meinem Nutz.

3 Wer mag mir denn zuwider sein?
Gott ist mit mir; auf ihn allein
verlaß ich mich zu allen Zeit,
weil stets bereit
sein Hülfe seiner Christenheit.

4 Der Schlangenkopf liegt schon im Koth,
drum hats, Gott Lob, nun keine Noth;

Ach was muß mein Jesus leiden

Here is my translation of the hymn, ”Ach was muß mein Jesus leiden” (J. Olearius, 1671), from the author’s Singekunst for Esto mihi (Quinquagesima). The original printing indicates the tune ”Ach was soll ich Sünder machen” with repetitions as needed, but it is clear that the text originates as a rhymed prayer not designed for singing to a standard chorale melody. One could alternate two melodies for the body and refrain of each stanza (87878778 and 7777, both trochaic, though of the former there are only two in Zahn). Instead, I give a new melody by Robin D. Fish, Jr, specially composed for this post (thanks, Robin!).

Mel.: Ach was muß mein Jesus leiden.

OH, what must my Jesus suffer!—
  What great torment and distress—
Sin and death to slay, and offer
  Life with Him in blessedness!
Who can
count His sorrows ever?
I was dead in sin’s black night,
Now I am a child of light!
Now no foe can vex
me ever.
Help, Lord, mercy have on me!
From all sin my heart make free,
Let me e’er more faithful be,
Let me give due thanks to Thee!

2 Let me be Thy grace perceiving
Through Thy cross bedecked with gore,
When the cross, distress, and grieving
Press my heart and choke me sore.
Thou my heart’s true jubilation,
Christ, the virtue of Thy blood
  Is my precious, quick’ning flood
In all grief my consolation.
Help, Lord, mercy have on me!
From all sin my heart make free,
Let me e’er more faithful be,
Let me give due thanks to Thee!

Ach was muß mein Jesus leiden,
wieviel Marter, Angst und Noth,
daß mich nicht von ihm soll scheiden
meine Sünde, Höll und Tod!
Wer will allen Jammer zählen?
Ich war lebend, tot und blind,
nun bin ich des Lichtes Kind,
nun kann mich kein Feind mehr quälen.
 Jesu, hilf, erbarm dich mein!
Mach mein Herz von Sünden rein.
Laß mich Sünd nicht nehmen ein,
laß mich immer frömmer sein,
laß mich dir recht dankbar sein.

2 Laß mich durch dein Kreuz erblicken
deine große Gütigkeit,
wenn mein Herz will gar ersticken,
wenn mich drückt Kreuz, Noth und Leid.
Jesu, meines Herzens Freude,
deines theuren Blutes Kraft
ist der edle Lebenssaft,
und mein Trost in allem Leide.
 Jesu, hilf, erbarm dich mein!
Mach mein Herz von Sünden rein.
Laß mich Sünd nicht nehmen ein,
laß mich immer frömmer sein,
laß mich dir recht dankbar sein.
