Christenherz, sei unverzaget

Here is my translation of the exhortatory comfort hymn “Christenherz, sei unverzaget,” an anonymous cento (stanzas 1, 7, 6, 9, 11, 12, 14, 15) and revision of the hymn “Ei, mein Herz, sei unverzaget / Kennst du Gottes Liebe nicht” (Jacob Gabriel Wolf, d. 1754), which was set to “Freu dich sehr, o meine Seele” and comprised 15 stanzas as first published in Freylinghausen 1714. Its main theme is God’s faithfulness and our consequent trust. The revision evidently dates from the mid-19th century, the earliest instance located by the translator being the Deutsches Gesangbuch für die Evangelisch-Lutherische Kirche in den Vereinigten Staaten (J. C. File, 1849) #65, the hymnal of the Evangelical Lutheran Ministerium of Pennsylvania and the Adjacent States. From thence (or rather from ed. 1866) it seems to have passed into Evangelisch-Lutherisches Gesangbuch (Milwaukee, Wisc.: G. Brumder, 1872), the hymnal of the Ev.-Luth. Joint Synod of Wisconsin and Other States, which was largely a copy of the Pennsylvania hymnal. Meanwhile, German hymnals, esp. in Prussia, continued to include the original hymn, nor does the Pennsylvania revision seem to have crossed the Atlantic. The appointed melody in the American hymnals is “Werde munter, mein Gemüte.”

 

CHRISTIAN heart, be not despairing!
Know’st thou not God’s faithfulness?
Hear His Word to thee declaring;
He shall not His oath efface;
If in deep distress thou cry,
If in throes of death thou sigh,
Oh, God’s faithfulness is ever
New each hour, and faileth never!

2 Who brought reconciliation
With Himself by Jesus blood?
Who hath crowned thee with salvation
Far beyond all earthly good?
Is’t not God who chooseth thee
One among His saints to be,
Since His faithfulness is ever
New each hour, and faileth never?

3 Who hath hitherto thee guided,
Leading on an even road?
Who hath for thy meat provided,
And besides done many a good?
Neither will He now withhold
His most gracious face of old,
For His faithfulness is ever
New each hour, and faileth never!

4 Firstly, then, due praises sing Him
For the riches of His grace!
Grateful off’rings shalt thou bring Him
With true love before His face.
In true faith a hymn intone
Of what He for thee hath done;
For His faithfulness is ever
New each hour, and faileth never!

5 Never gladly He aggrieveth
When He chastens those He loves;
All their sorrows He relieveth,
Whom the Cross by trial proves.
Those who will His hour await
His glad presence will elate;
For His faithfulness is ever
New each hour, and faileth never!

6 Therefore let no cross deprive thee
Of thy trust in Him alone!
God Almighty will revive thee,
Wait but for His light to dawn!
Lightning dread and thunder blast
Yield to fairer skies at last,
For His faithfulness is ever
New each hour, and faileth never!

7 See, Thy Helper now extendeth
Arms of love, thee to embrace;
He His mercy to thee sendeth,
Brings thee to His dwelling place.
There in tender love will He
Crown thy patience blessedly.
See His faithfulness forever
New each hour, and failing never.

8 Christian heart, this faith possessing,
Boldly hasten, Him to meet!
Hasten to receive His blessing,
There thou hast the harbor sweet.
When thy journey thus is done,
Let a new hymn be begun:
“Praise God’s faithfulness, forever
New each hour, and failing never!”

Christen herz, sei unverzaget!
Kennst du Gottes Treue nicht?
Höre, was sein Wort dir saget;
glaube, das er dir's nicht bricht.
Ob du rufst aus tiefer Noth,
ob du ringest mit dem Tod;
Gottes alte Vatertreue
ist noch alle Stunden neue. (1)

2 Wer hat dich mit ihm versöhnet
in dem blute Jesu Christ?
Wer hat dich mit Heil gekrönet,
welches unaussprechlich ist?
Ist's nicht Gott, der dich erwählt
und zu seinen Kindern zählt?
O die alte Vatertreue
ist noch alle Stunden neue. (7)

3 Wer hat dich bisher geleitet
und geführt auf ebner Bahn?
Wer den Tisch dir zubereitet
und dir sonst viel Guts gethan?
Der entzieht dir jetzt auch nicht
sein erbarmend Angesicht.
Trau der alten Vatertreue,
die noch alle Stunden neue. (6)

4 Preise denn vor allen Dingen
solchen Reichtum seine Güt!
Du mußt ihm Dankopfer bringen
aus inbrünstigem Gemüth;
stimm ein Lied im Glauben an,
von dem, was er schon gethan,
und hoff auf die Vatertreue,
die noch alle Stunden neue. (9)
 
5 Gott betrübet nie von Herzen,
wenn er züchtigt die er liebt;
er stillt alle ihre Schmerzen,
wenn sie sind durchs Kreuz geübt.
Wer nur harrt dir rechten Zeit,
der wird bald von ihm erfreut
und erfährt, daß seine Treue
ist noch alle Stunden neue. (11)

6 Nun so laß dir deinen Glauben
und die frohe Zuversicht
keine Macht des Kreuzes rauben!
Warte, bis dein Licht anbricht!
Auf den Blitz und Donnerschlag,
folgt ein angenehmer Tag
und verkündigt Gottes Treue
sei noch alle Stunden neue. (12)

7 Sieh, dein Helfer streckt die Arme
voll von Liebe nach dir aus,
daß er deiner sich erbarme
und dich führe in sein Haus.
Dort wird seine Vaterhuld
selig krönen die Geduld,
und du schaust die alte Treue,
wie sie in dem Himmel neue. (14)

8 Christenherz, eil ihm entgegen,
fahr im Glauben freudig fort!
Eile, nimm von ihm den Segen,
so gelangest du zum Port.
Und am Ende deine Bahn
stimmst ein neues Lieb du an:
"Dank der ewgen Vatertreue!
Sie war alle Stunden neue!" (15)
