Ich heb mein Augen sehnlich auf

Here is my translation of the hymn, “Ich heb mein Augen sehnlich auf” (C. Becker, d. 1604), a metrical version of the 121st Psalm from Becker’s Psalter (1602). In the Evangelisch-Lutherisches Gesangbuch #48, the melody “Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir” is appointed, though it is perhaps well known that a proper melody composed for the hymn by Heinrich Schütz exists (which melody has also been fitted in a Lutheran hymnal to a versification of the Magnificat) and may be used to good effect especially by a choir using the full harmonization.

 

I LIFT my gaze with longing eye
And glimpse the tow'ring hills on high,
From whence to me, from heaven's seat,
My God descends with succor sweet. 

2 My help comes from the Lord alone,
Whose heart is glad to make it known;
Both heav'n and earth His hands have made,
Round us He keeps His guard arrayed

3 He leads thee on the righteous way,
Nor suffers foot to slip or stray;
In God put all thy confidence,
He is thy sleepless, strong Defense. 

4 The faithful Ward of Israel
Thy soul and body watcheth well,
He slumbers not by day or night,
Ne’er droops His eye nor dims His sight. 

5 By grace, when any harm impends,
Thy faithful God thy life defends,
Beneath the shelter of His grace
Thou findest e’er thy surest place.

6 The heat of sun, the moon by night,
Shall never thee disturb nor smite;
God turns away all weights of grief,
To His own glory, thy relief. 

7 There shall no evil thee assail;
The Lord's protection shall avail.
He graciously preserves thy soul
From every woe, and keeps thee whole. 

8 The Lord preserve thy goings e’er,
Thy health on every pathway spare,
Escort thee to His heav’nly door,
From henceforth and forevermore.

1 Ich heb mich Augen sehnlich auf
und seh die Berge hoch hinauf,
wann mir mein Gott vons Himmelsthron
mit seiner Hilf zu statten komm.

2 Mein Hilfe kommt mir von dem Herrn;
er hilft uns ja von Herzen gern.
Himmel und Erd hat er gemacht;
er hält über uns Hut und Wacht.

3 Er führet dich auf rechter Bahn,
wird deinen Fuß nicht gleiten lan;
setz nur auf Gott dein Zuversicht:
der dich behütet, schläfet nicht.

4 Der treue Hüter Israel
bewachet dir dein Leib und Seel;
er schläft nicht, weder Tag noch Nacht,
wird auch nicht müde von der Wacht.

5 Vor allem Unfall gnädiglich
der fromme Gott behütet dich;
unter dem Schatten seiner Gnad
bist du gesichert früh und spat.

6 Der Sonne Hitz, des Monden Schein
dir sollen nicht beschwerlich sein.
Gott wendet alle Trübsal schwer
zu deinem Nutz und seiner Ehr.

7 Kein Übel muß begegnen dir;
des Herren Schutz ist gut dafür.
In Gnad bewahrt er deine Seel
vor allem Leib und Ungefäll.

8 Der Herr dein Ausgang stets bewahr,
zu Weg und Steg gesund dich spar;
bring dich zu Haus in seim Geleit,
von nun an bis in Ewigkeit.
