Gott Vater, Herr, wir danken dir

Here is my translation of the prayer hymn “Gott Vater, Herr, wir danken dir” (Anon., ? 17th c.), a Trinitarian hymn constructed, like Luther’s “Erhalt uns, Herr, bein deinem Wort,” with petitions to the three persons and finally to the Trinity. I find it published in Christliche Kirchen-Gesang (Nuremberg, 1625) without ascription. Fischer also gives it as anonymous, evidently first appearing in Praetorius’s Musae Sioniae, fol. Q iij, no. CXXXIX, then in a German-French hymnal of Montbeliard, 1618. The melody appointed in the Evangelisch-Lutherisches Gesangbuch #46 is “Herr Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht.”



 

LORD God and Father, thanks to Thee
That Thou hast kept us constantly,
And fed us of Thy bounteous store;
In grace preserve us evermore.

2 Lord Jesus Christ, Thou, true God-Man,
Hast saved us from th’ eternal ban
And brought us heaven’s kingdom near:
Oh, make us like Thine angels dear!

3 God, Holy Ghost, the Couns’lor kind,
Who makest new the heart and mind:
Increase faith, hope, and charity,
And turn us from all sin to Thee.

4 O God, the Holy Trinity,
Thou blessed art eternally;
O faithful God, when life we leave,
Our soul into Thy hands receive!

bewahr uns fürder gnädiglich.

2 Herr Jesu Christ, wahr Mensch und Gott,
hast uns erlöst vom ewgen Tod
und uns verdient das Himmelreich,
mach uns dein lieben Engeln gleich.

3 Gott heilger Geist, du Tröster gut,
der du giebst rechten Sinn und Muth;
den Glauben, Lieb und Hoffnung mehr
und uns von Sünden zu dir kehr.

4 Du heilige Dreifaltigkeit,
du seist gelobt in Ewigkeit!
O treuer Gott, am letzten End
nimm unsre Seel in deine Händ!
