Gott ist die Liebe selbst

Here is my translation of the Trinitarian hymn, “Gott ist die Liebe selbst” (Anon., 18th c.), as found in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #58 (Wisconsin Synod); first appearing, according to Fischer, in the Eisleben hymnal 1721 among the Pentecost hymns. It is to be distinguished from a similarly titled hymn by [Johann Peter] Uz. The appointed melody is “Nun danket alle Gott.”

 

THE Lord our God is Love,
From whom love’s gifts so pleasing
As from a fountain pure
Spring up and flow unceasing;
That man in God abides
Who doth abide in love,
And whom no might or force
From Jesus’ wounds doth move.

2 The Father loves the world
And in great mercy gave us
Poor mortals His dear Son
To comfort and to save us;
His Son doth love us too
And, counting not the loss,
Bore all things willingly,
E’en death upon the cross.

3 What plenteous streams have flown
From this, God’s love and favor!
God’s love is shed abroad
In our hearts now and ever.
The Holy Ghost Himself
Doth occupy our soul,
So that we have become
His house and temple whole.

4 He who the Savior loves,
Holds high what His words tell us;
The Lord this promise makes:
That He will come indwell us:
What joy and bliss divine,
When God the Father, Son,
And Spirit come to stay,
And in the soul are known!

5 O God the Holy Ghost,
To know Christ’s love, oh, teach us!
And that our hearts e’er burn
With purest love, enrich us!
And to the life above
Transport us finally,
Where then at last our love
Shall perfect be in Thee.

Gott ist die Liebe selbst,
von dem die Liebesgaben,
als aus dem reinsten Quell,
den ersten Ursprung haben;
der bleibet fest in Gott,
wer in der Liebe bleibt,
und welchen keine Macht
aus Jesu Wunden treibt.

2 Der Vater liebt die Welt;
sein väterlich Erbarmen
schickt den geliebten Sohn
zu uns verlassnen Armen,
und dieser liebet uns,
drum scheut er keine Noth,
er träget williglich
sogar den Kreuzestod.

3 Wie reiche Ströme sind
von dieser Huld geflossen!
Die Liebe Gottes ist
in unser Herz gegossen.
Der werthe heilge Geist
nimmt selbst die Seele ein;
so daß wir nun sein Haus
und Tempel worden sein.

4 Nun, wer den Heiland liebt,
der hält sein Wort in Ehren,
und so verspricht der Herr,
bei ihm selbst einzukehren:
was muß für Freud und Lust,
die göttlich ist, entstehn,
wenn Vater, Sohn und Geist
in eine Seele gehn.

5 Gott heilger Geist! lehr uns
die Liebe Jesu kennen,
Laß unsre Herzen stets
in reiner Liebe brennen,
und endlich führ uns dort
in jenes Leben ein,
wo unsre Liebe wird
in dir vollkommen sein.
