Lobe, mein Herz! deinen Gott,

Here is my translation of the praise hymn “Lobe, mein Herz, deinen Gott” (J. Olearius, d. 1684). It is included in the Evangelisch-Lutherisches Gesangbuch (Wisconsin Synod) #42. The appointed hymn is “Singen wir aus Herzensgrund.”

 

GIVE to God, my heart, thy praise,
Who from trouble guards thy ways,
Doth for all thy sin atone
By His grace and love alone,
Gives thee here His righteousness
Comfort, grace, and holiness,
And hereafter, blessedness.

2 Then thy God thine All will be,
There thy gladd’ning Light is He,
He thy Comfort and Defense,
Fills with joy thine heart and sense,
Makes thy soul and body new,
Like the beauteous sun for hue,
Since thou art his image true.

3 To Thy praise and glory, Lord,
From my grateful lips outpoured,
Songs shall rise continually
With the chosen company!
How my soul and body thrill
Endless days with hymns to fill
On Thy glorious heav’nly hill.

Lobe, mein Herz! deinen Gott,
der dir hilft aus aller Not,
der dir alle Sündenschuld
schenkt aus lauter Gnad und Huld,
der dir hier Gerechtigkeit,
Gnade, trost und Heiligkeit,
und dort giebt die Seligkeit.

2 Da will dein Gott Alles sein,
da dir Gott, dein Freudenschein,
Leib und Seel erneuen ganz,
gleich dem schönen Sonnenglanz;
da ist Gott dein Trost und Schild,
der dein Herz mit Freuden füllt,
weil du bist sein Ebenbild.

3 Dir, Herr! zu Lob, Ehr und Dank
will ich meinen Lobgesang
fröhlich singen immerdar
mit der auserwählten Schaar:
denn mein Leib und Seel erfreut
in des Himmels Herrlichkeit
wohnen wird in Ewigkeit.
