Du lieber Herre Jesu Christ

My next new hymn translation for Lochner’s Easter-book is the pastoral office hymn, “Du lieber Herre Jesu Christ” (L. Helmbold, 1585), which closes Devotion 31. A multivoice setting is provided by Joachim a Burck, for which only the discant line is available.

DEAR Jesus Christ, my God and Lord,
The Father’s everlasting Word,
Thou broughtest from His very breast
The Word that saves and makes us blest.

2 Thou hast sent into every land
Thy servants chosen by Thy hand—
Yea, send’st them to us still today;
Thine therefore be the praise for aye.

3 We pray Thee, heedful of Thy Word—
Thou by the Father shalt be heard—
Grant them one in Thy truth to be,
As Thou with Him, eternally.

4 Teach us to mourn our sins indeed,
And through Thee to be truly freed;
with Thy Spirit rule us all,
Thine be forever praise and laud.
