Willkommen sei die fröhlich Zeit

My next new hymn translation for Lochner’s Easter-book is “Willkommen sei die fröhlich Zeit” (A. Lobwasser, 1578), of which stanzas 1–2, 4–5 open Devotion 36 (“Christ, imparting a blessing, ascends into heaven”). It is a paraphrase of Lactantius’ “Salve festa dies.” Lochner interestingly does not (? know to) ascribe the hymn to Lobwasser, but simply notes: “16th century.” In 16th c. hymnals, the tune “Christe der du bist Tag und Licht” is sometimes assigned. Other early paraphrases of the hymn include “Also heilig ist der Tag” (a popular hymn intercalated in the procession, 15th c.), “Grüest seist du heilig Tag” (J. von Salzburg, 1390), “Freut euch heut alle gleich” (Boh. Breth. 1544), and “Sei gegrüßt du heilger Tag” (J. Spangenberg, 1545). Though we have some translations and paraphrases of the hymn in English (e.g., “Hail Thee, Festival Day,” “Welcome, Happy Morning,” etc., and my own “Welcome, Festal Morning” in Liber Hymnorum), few or none exist in Common Meter, so I offer my own translation from the German here.

HAIL, welcome be, thou joyful day,
A solemn feast to keep for aye;
When Christ defeated hell’s domains
And evermore in heaven reigns!

2 Behold, how fair the world’s rebirth—
A token to us here on earth,
That He, the Lord, hath every grace
From heaven brought to bless our race!

3 For now that hell a captive pines,
And Christ in glorious triumph shines,
Rejoicing fills the greening wold,
Glad sings the herb in field and fold.

4 All heaven’s lights and earth and sea
Praise God and own His majesty,
His heav’nly path with worship swell,
Who wasted all the realms of hell.

5 True God, He governs all things now
Whose on the cross to death did bow,
All creatures which He caused to be
Adore His glorious majesty.

6 O Christ, Redeemer sent from heav’n,
Who as a pledge to us wast giv’n,
The Father’s Son eternally,
Begotten of His Deity:

7 Keep us from hell’s devouring jaws,
Lest ever they our ruin cause,
Let us be loosed from bonds of sin
And vict’ry o’er the devil win.

2 Schau, wie schön ist die Welt verneut,
welchs uns das anzeigt und bedeut,
daß der Herr aller Gnaden Gab
