Wort des höchsten Mundes

My next new hymn translation for Lochner’s Easter-book is “Wort des höchsten Mundes” (H. C. Hecker, 1730), of which stanzas 1 and 3–5 close Devotion 29 (“Christ for the Propagation of His Kingdom Bids the Disciples Go into All the World and Preach the Gospel unto All Creatures”).

WORD from heav’n expressèd,
Jesus, Angel blessed
Of the cov’nant high!
At our parents’ falling,
Came Thy precious calling,
Sped Thy Gospel nigh—
Pow’r that gives / true faith that lives!
Tidings pledging life and heaven,
By Thy mercy given!

2 Now is that fulfillèd
Which His pleasure willèd
Ere the worlds began—
What the shadow-tinted
Off’rings long had hinted,
For the sake of man—
What was heard / in sacred Word—
Shall be Yea, Amen forever
In our Lord and Savior.

3 All is now completed,
Wrath and guilt defeated
By the Savior’s grace;
Jesus favor gained us
And God’s love obtained us,
Dying in our place.
This thing too / is sure and true:
Jesus lives, for us beseeching:
Oh, most blessed teaching!

4 To the sin-dead mortal,
Jesus’ Word the portal
Unto life makes clear:
Oh, those feet adorèd,
Doctrine sweetly pourèd,
Covenant most dear!
Tidings told / to young and old,
That, by doctrine true discernèd,
They may all be turnèd!

5 Come, ye hearts convicted,
Bitterly afflicted,
Who your sins deplore:
Come to His compassion,
Who for your salvation
All affliction bore.
Be renewed / by Jesus’ blood:
God, who loves you, for you liveth
And all guilt forgiveth.

6 Firm this ground abideth,
When the world subsideth,
’Twill not sink nor fail;
Thereon will I stay me;
Faith will not betray me,
But in Christ avail;
And I’ll lead / a life indeed
As befits this Gospel power,
By God’s help each hour.

7 Christ, Thy strength ’tis solely
Does such wonders holy;
Oh, then help Thou me!
Naught from Thee can tear me;
In the Gospel bear me
Through all agony,
And let me / at last with Thee
As Thy Gospel-child inherit
All that Thou didst merit!

Wort des höchsten Mundes!
Engel meines Bundes!
Jesu, unser Ruhm!
Bald, da wir gefallen,
ließest du erschallen
Evangelium,
eine Kraft, die Glauben schafft,
eine Botschaft, die zum Leben
uns von dir gegeben.

2 Was sein Wohgefallen
vor der Zeit uns allen
fest bestimmet hat;
Was der Opfer Schatten
längst verkündet hatten,
das vollführt sein Rath.
Was die Schrift verspricht, das trifft
alles ein in Jesu Namen,
und ist Ja und Amen.

3 Alles ist vollendet,
Jesu Gnade wendet
allen Zorn und Schuld.
Jesus ist gestorben,
Jesus hat erworben
alle Gnad und Huld.
Auch ist dies fürwahr gewiß:
Jesus lebt in Preis und Ehre;
ach erwünschte Lehre!

4 Uns in Sünden Toten
machen Jesu Boten
dieses Leben kund.
Lieblich sind die Füße,
und die Lehren süße,
theuer ist der Bund.
Aller Welt ist nun vermeldt
durch der guten Botschaftlehre,
daß man sich bekehre.

5 Kommt, zerknirschte Herzen,
die in bittern Schmerzen
das Gesetz zerschlug,
kommt zu dessen Gnaden,
der für euch beladen
alle Schmerzen trug.
Jesu Blut stärkt euren Mut,
Gott ist hier, der euch geliebet
und die Schuld vergibet.

6 Dieser Grund bestehet;
wenn die Welt vergehet,
fällt er doch nicht ein.
Darauf will ich bauen;
so soll mein Vertrauen
evangelisch sein;
auch will ich nun würdiglich
dieser Kraft, die mir gegeben,
evangelisch leben.

7 Jesu, deine Stärke
schaffet diese Werke,
stehe du mir bei!
Nichts kann mich nun scheiden,
hilf denn, daß mein Leiden
evangelisch sei.
Laß auch mich einmal auf dich,
als ein Kind mit dir zu erben,
evangelisch sterben!
