My next new translation for Lochner’s Easter-book is “Gelobt sei Gott im höchsten Thron” (M. Weiße, 1531), of which four stanzas from a later, shortened form are taken equivalent stanzas 1, 10, 18, and 19/20 of the original form, 19 and 20 being combined into a closing stanza. This shorter, five-stanza form with slight textual changes is found in 19th c. hymnals and is composed of the original stanzas 1, 4, 10, 18, 19/20, thus Lochner omits only one stanza of this cento. This form is found, e.g., with a modern melody for two voices in Blösch’s Zweihundertsechzig zweistimmige Lieder (3rd ed., 1874), which melody includes 3 Alleluias rather than the original 1. An earlier cento including orig. stanza 9 as new stanza 2 also occurs. Generally, the centos are found with the melody and triple Alleluia by Melchior Vulpius attached to “Ye Sons and Daughters of the King.”
Mel.: Gelobt sei Gott im höchsten Thron
BLEST be our God on heaven’s throne
With Christ His sole begotten Son,
Who grace and favor for us won,
Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia.
2 When here He lived with reverence,
He paid for sin and all offense,
By dying in all innocence.
Alleluia, &c.
3 Anointed then His body lay
As was the wonted Jewish way,
And with a watch kept night and day.
Alleluia, &c.
4 The third day, at the break of dawn,
When by the door still stood the stone,
He freely rose without a groan.
Alleluia, &c.
5 An angel came from heav’n that day,
And rolled the mighty stone away
Whereat the watch had great dismay.
Alleluia, &c.
6 When thus the tomb he open brake,
At once the earth was made to quake,
The keepers’ strength did them forsake.
Alleluia, &c.
7 The angel sat upon the stone,
His robe was white, his count’nance shone
Like lightning, brighter than the sun.
Alleluia, &c.
8 Then to the tomb the women came,
And saw the angel like a flame,
At which a fear upon them came.
Alleluia, &c.
9 The angel said to them: Fear not,
For I know well your fearful thought:
Ye find not Jesus, whom ye sought.
Alleluia, &c.
*10 He is arisen from the dead,
He overcame distress and dread,
Come see the place where he was laid [For sin and all offense He paid].
Alleluia, &c.
11 They ventured fearful then inside,
Sitting wherein a lad they spied,
Whose radiant face them terrified.
Alleluia, &c.
12 Then unto them the angels said
Him whom ye seek away is sped,
Find ye in Galilee your Head.
Alleluia, &c.
13 His word to you in heart reprise,
How from the dead He would arise,
That ye may see Him with your eyes.
Alleluia, &c.
14 Go then and His disciples tell
That He arose; their fears dispel,
All that He said rememb’ring well.
Alleluia, &c.
15 Tell them to go to Galilee,
That they their Savior’s face may see,
When some few days concluded be.
Alleluia, &c.
16 This word the women soon forgot,
And to th’ eleven tidings brought
That He was gone whom they had sought.
Alleluia, &c.
17 Th’ eleven would not trust the word,
Because the things which had occurred
They had not seen, but only heard.
Alleluia, &c.
*18 Therefore, Lord Christ, we ask of Thee,
Whom risen from the dead we see,
Grant what for us shall blessed be.
Alleluia, &c.
*19 Ready our hearts, Lord, Thee we pray,
That we Thy truth receive today
In no cold, unbelieving way
Alleluia, &c.
*20 So may we, from all sin set free,
To Thy blest name unfearingly
Sing now and for eternity:
Alleluia, &c.

GERMAN
Gelobt sei Gott im höchsten Thron
samt seinem eingebornen Sohn,
der für uns all hat gnug gethan.
Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja.
2 Als er allhie gewandelt hat,
versühnet Sünd und Missethat,
durch seinen unschuldigen Tod,
Halleluja.
3 Nach welchem er gesalbet ward
begraben nach Jüdischer Art,
und da mit Hütern wohl verwahrt.
Halleluja.
4 Des Morgens früh am dritten Tag
weil nach der Stein am Grabe lag
erstund er frei ohn alle Klag.
Halleluja.
5 Ein Engel steig vom Himmel hrab
und thet den großen Stein von Grab
welchs den Hütern erschrecken gab,
Halleluja.
6 Da er also das Grab aufbrach,
bald ein groß Erdbeben geschach,
davon der Hüter Kraft zubrach.
Halleluja.
7 Der Engel satzt sich auf den Stein,
sein Kleid war weiß, sein Antlitz schein
gleichwie der Blitz ganz hell und rein.
Halleluja.
8 Da kamen Weibesbilder dar,
wurden des Engels auch gewahr,
und entsatzten sich ganz und gar.
Halleluja.
9 Der Engel sprach, Ei fürcht euch nicht,
denn ich weiß wohl, was euch gebricht:
ihr sucht Jesum, den findt ihr nicht.
Halleluja.
*10 Er ist erstanden von dem Tod,
hat überwunden alle Noth,
kommt, seht, wo er gelegen hat [versöhnet Sünd und Missethat.
Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja.
11 Sie gingen furchtsam in das Grab,
in dem da saß ein ander Knab,
des Glanz ihn auch Erschrecken gab.
Halleluja.
12 Da sagten die Engel zu ihnn,
Den ihr sucht, der ist schon dahin,
in Galiläa findt ihr ihn.
Halleluja.
13 Denkt, was er euch gesaget hat,
wie er würd auferstehn vom Tod,
und wißt, daß sichs ergangen hat.
Halleluja.
14 Geht hin und sagt sein Jüngern frei,
daß er vom Tod erstanden sei,
und denket seiner Wort dabei.
Halleluja.
15 Heißt sie in Galiläam gehn,
daß sie daselbst vor ihm gestehn,
sobald ein wenig Tag vergehn.
Halleluja.
16 Die Weiber fehlten dieser Lehr,
und sagten dem betrübten Heer,
wie Jesus weg getragen wär.
Halleluja.
17 Doch gläuben diß die Jünger nicht,
weil ihnn diese ware geschicht
noch nicht recht kam für ihr Gesicht.
Halleluja.
*18 Nun bitten wir dich, Jesu Christ,
weil du vom Tod erstanden bist,
verleih, was uns seliglich ist. [verleihe, was uns selig ist.
Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja.
*19 O mach unser Herzen bereit [O mache unser Herz bereit,
anzunehmen deine Wahrheit
ohn alle Eigensinnigkeit.
Halleluja.
*20 Damit wir von Sünden gefreit [damit wir, von der Sünd befreit,
deinem Namen gebenedeit,
frei mögen singen allezeit: [dir mögen singen allezeit.
Halleluja, Halleluja, Halleluja.
