Zur Zeit des alten Testaments

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase, “Zur Zeit des alten Testaments” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm LXXII, Deus judicium tuum, with title “Prophecy of the kingdom of Christ, repayment of sin, and praise of God.” The pleasant Ionian melody, constructed on the meter 887.887.447.447, is relatively straightforward and accessible.

 

 

 

WHEN stood the ancient covenant,
And Isr’el’s royal government,
Men longed with great desiring
That God would send from David’s line
The long-since promised His Son divine
And hear their plea untiring.
King Solomon / too sought this Son,
Here of His kingdom telleth,
By th’ Holy Ghost / doth sing and boast
Of what Christ’s reign entaileth.

2 O God, Thy judgment give the King,
And in the King’s Son let there spring
Thy righteousness unfailing.
Let Him bring peace and righteousness
Unto the souls in sin’s distress,
And spare the grieved and wailing.
That here on earth / peace going forth
May have its proclamation;
Thy righteousness / Thou shalt express
By Word to every nation.

3 By Him the needy in their plight
Shall see true justice come to light,
The poor shall see salvation.
Those whom the Law did sore compel
And conscience, and sin pressed to hell,
He will show His compassion,
Th’ oppressors, who / by lore untrue
Men’s consciences devour—
He by His Word / shall, rest assured,
Break and cast down with power!

4 On earth He will be feared as sure
And long as moon and sun endure,
In every generation.
Like drops that on the grass distill
And rains the lands with moisture fill,
Shall be His proclamation,
And in His time / with joy sublime
The righteous be uplifted;
His mighty peace / shall never cease
To mortals to be gifted.

5 Begin shall His dominion broad
In Judah’s land by Jordan’s flood,
Thence to the world extending;
To earth in its entirety,
He shall from sea to farthest sea
Salvation wide be sending.
The desert-kind / with heart inclined
Shall for His grace implore Him;
His rivals must / all lick the dust,
And bow their face before Him.

6 The kings of distant isles with wealthy hoard
Shall bow and worship Him, the Lord,
And what they have shall proffer;
And those of rich Arabia
Shall come with hearts of joy and awe,
Their gifts to Him shall offer,
And one and all / before Him fall,
To glorify the Savior;
All nations, poor / and rich adore
And live upon His favor.

7 He shall receive the poor man’s cry,
Deliver him, and help supply,
And still his sorrows wholly;
He shall do well and grace bestow,
Redeem the souls from pain and woe
Who needy are and lowly.
From all deceit / and harmful threat,
He gives men help most gracious,
To Him their blood / for Him that flowed
Is ever counted precious.

8 Unceasing shall His kingdom be
In heav’n and earth no peer hath He,
For He shall live forever.
All things that Christians are and have
He kindly will from them receive,
From any faithful giver.
In every need / He shall give heed
To pray’rs of those who fear Him;
With thanks and praise / in all their ways
They daily may draw near Him.

9 Like as the trees of Lebanon
Stand green and fair with fruit well grown
And in the breezes shaking,
So shall the Gospel also stand
With life and doctrine fill the land
All by the Spirit’s making.
With young and old / all manifold
Shall He His gifts be granting;
The world around / His Word shall sound,
In grace shall none be wanting.

10 As long as sun to earth gives light
And in the firmament shines bright,
His name time never fazes;
So that men who in ages hence
Shall come into this world immense
Will sing and write His praises:
That nations all, / both great and small,
Shall in this Lord be blessèd,
And His praise be / increasingly
Throughout the world expressèd.

¶ Blest be the God of Israel,
The Lord, our dear Immanuel,
Who doeth wonders solely!
Blest be His glorious name for aye,
His majesty as bright as day,
By all be praised as holy,
And be confessed / from east to west,
That all may hear and see it;
With joyful sound / our thanks propound
And sing Amen, so be it!

Und Israelschen Regiments,
Thet man hertzlich begeren,
Daß got seinn son auß Davids stam,
Wolt kommen lan so lobesam,
Und sie der bitt geweren,
Des ward auch fro, / köng Salomo,
Sein Reich thut hie beschreiben,
Durch Gottes geyst, / ders singen heyst,
Was Christus solt betreiben.

2 Got gib dem könig dein gericht,
Dein grechtigkeyt laß fehlen nicht
Christo des königs Sone:
Daß Er bring zur gerechtigkeyt
Das volck, so in den Sünden leit,
Der elendent verschone,
Auff das auff erd, / verkündet werd,
Der frid an allen enden,
Dein grechtigkeyt, / werd außgebreyt,
Wann du dein wort wirst senden.

3 Damit das elend volck auff erd,
Durch in bei recht erhalten werd,
Und sei das heyl der armen:
Welchen das gsetz die gwissen zwingt,
Und durch die Sünd zur hellen dringt,
Der wil Er sich erbarmen,
Die lesterer, / mit menschen leer
Die gwissen wölln zerreissen.
Die sol Er fort, / mit seinem wort,
Biß in die hell zerschmeissen.

4 Man wirt in förchten hie auff erd,
So lang der Mon und Sonne wert
Von kind zu kindes kinden:
Wie die tropffen falln in das graß
Und der regen das land macht naß,
Wirt man sein wort verkünden.
Zu seiner zeit, / mit grosser freud,
Wirt sich der grecht erheben.
Seinn friden groß, / on underloß,
Wil Er der welt hie geben.

5 Sein herrschafft wirt sich heben an,
Im Judschen land an dem Jordan,
Biß an der welte ende:
Der Erden kreyß gantz runds umbher
Von einem biß zum andern Meer
Wirt Er sein heyl auß senden.
Die wüsten hertz, / soln sich herwertz
Zu seiner gnaden schicken.
Die im warn gram, / soln sich alsam
Vor seinem angsicht bücken.

6 Die König in den Inseln fern,
Soln all anbetten disen HERRN,
Im schencken was sie haben:
Und die auß reich Arabien,
WErden auch fr¨ølich kommen hin,
Zu bringen ire gaben.
Sol jederman, / in betten an,
Und im die ehre geben.
All heyden gleich, / beyd arm und reich,
Soln seiner gnad geleben.

7 Er wirt erhörn des armen gschrey,
Erretten in und machen frey,
Und all seinn kummer wenden:
Er wirt wol thun und gnedig sein,
Den Seelen helffen auß der pein,
Der gringen und ellenden,
Auß dem betrug, / und ungefug,
Hilfft Er in hie auff erden.
Es wirt ir blut, / thewr, werdt und gut,
Vor im geachtet werden.

8 Unendtlich wirt sein Königreich,
Im himel, erd hat er keyn gleich,
Dann Er wird ewig leben:
All was die Christen sein und han,
Nimpt Er gnediglich von in an,
Wann sies im glauben geben.
Stedts immerdar, / in alles fahr,
Werden sie vor im betten.
Mit lob und preiß / auff alle weiß,
Mögen sie zu im tretten.

9 Gleicher weiß wie der Libanon,
Steht mit bäumen gar grün und schon,
Und von dem wind thut beben:
So sol das Evangeli auch,
Mit lehr und leben gehn im brauch,
Als durch den geyst gegeben.
Bei jung und alt, / gar manigfalt,
Wirt Er sein gab außteylen.
In aller welt, / sein wort erschalt,
An gnad sols niemand feylen.

10 So lang die Sonn auff erden wert,
Und sich das firmament umbkert,
Wirt sein Nahm ewig bleiben:
Auff das auch die nach diser zeit
Soln kommen in die welt so weit,
Von im singen und schreiben.
Daß durch in werd / allhie auff erd,
Gesegnet alle heyden.
Daß sie sein ehr, / fort mehr und mehr,
In aller welt erbreyten.

¶ Gelobt sei Gott in Israel,
Der HERR genant Emmanuel,
Der thut alleyn die wunder:
Gelobt sei sein herrlicher nahm,
Sein Majestat so lobesam,
In gmein und in besunder.
Und werd bekandt / in allem land,
Die ehr seins heylgen namen.
Dem danckn wir all / mit reichem schall,
Und singen Amen, Amen.
