Daß unser Heiland Jesus Christ . . . Darum all Welt zun Waffen grifft

Here is my translation of the psalm paraphrase “Daß unser Heiland Jesus Christ . . . Darum all Welt zun Waffen grifft” (Burkard Waldis, d. 1556), based on Psalm XCIX, Dominus regnavit, with title “Psalm of thanksgiving, that God preserves His Word and true divine service in the face of all the world’s raging.” It is to be distinguished from Waldis’s Psalm XCVII, which begins with the same line, analogous to the similarities in the Psalm text itself. In this Psalm, Waldis uses a similar but slightly longer meter by inserting lines of 8 and 4 syllables between the lines of 7, thus 847.847 D (also used in Ps. XVII and LXVIII, e.g.), where his Ps. XCVII has 847.847.8477. His melody here

 

THAT Christ our Lord the throne is giv’n
O’er earth and heavn,
And is both King and Savior,
Makes all the world rise up and cry
Boast and defy,
And hold Him in disfavor.
Yet is His might Zion’s ground
Without all bound
And all the world must fear Him
And thank Him for His wondrous grace
In every place,
And for His works revere Him.

2 Christ’s righteousness within His realm
Doth overwhelm
All sin and all transgression;
The pains of judgment are relieved,
There is received
For torment, free salvation.
Exalt, therefore, the Lord your God,
And His name laud
Both morn and eve unfailing.
Before His footstool Him adore,
In fear implore
His mercy all-availing.

3 As Moses did, and Aaron too,
His faithful crew,
In priest’s and Levite’s station,
And Samuel, the sanctified,
And more beside
Of Isr’el’s ancient nation.
They were, according to God’s Word
In mercy heard,
And balm received from heaven.
They kept His testimonies aye
In every way,
And praise to God was given.

4 O Lord, Thou God of faithfulness,
In all distress
The wretched Thou relievest,
The sins of those who turn to Thee
With faithful plea,
Thou in Thy grace forgivest.
And so before Thy mercy seat
We come as meet
To give Thee adoration,
Since Thou dost on our soul impress
Thy holiness,
Forgiving our transgression.

Pocht, trutzt und keifft,
Und wil auffrührisch werden,
Doch ist sein gwalt zu Zion groß,
On alle moß,
Der alle welt muß weichen,
Im dancken für sein wunderthat,
Und grosse gnad,
Der HERR hat keynen gleychen.

2 Im Reich Christi wirt außgebreyt
Gerechtigkeyt,
Und alle Sünd vergeben:
Des grichtes straff wirt glassen nach,
Für pein und raach
Geschenckt das Ewig leben,
Drumb wir erheben unsern Gott,
Stedts frü und spat,
Seinn heylgen namen ehren,
