Der Glaub ist eine Zuversicht (supplement)

Here is my 1-stanza supplemental translation for the faith and justification hymn, “Der Glaub ist eine Zuversicht” (asc. Ludwig Andreas Gotter, d. 1735), from Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #375. Fischer finds its earliest appearance in Freylinghausen 1714, and the asc. to Gotter is not supported by Wetzel or Gotter’s hymn manuscript. He also notes that it was later reworked by Joh. Herm. Schrader with the third line “Die seines Geistes Kraft und Licht.” I am fortunate to find an earlier appearance in Geo. Seb. Krauss’s Geistliche Andachts-Harphe (Nur., 1708), again without ascription. Geistlicher Liederschatz (Nur., 1719) gives it the title “The Nature and Fruit of Faith.” Mich. Lilienthal’s Des Singens vernünftiger Gottesdienst (1723) gives the ascription “incerti,” that is, of an uncertain author. The stanza omitted from Hoppe’s translation as it appears in both the Northwestern Lutheran and Sela Gesangbuch is the fourth, perhaps most primed for the chopping block by its theologically negative / antithetical nature. The change of “Glück” to “Glaub” in st. 4, line 5, seems to originate with Freylinghausen, perhaps in confusion with or by analogy from st. 5, line 5, though Glaub seems like a natural reading, admittedly. The appointed melody in the Wisc. hymnal is “Es ist das Heil,” though in earlier hymnals, “Nun freut euch” and sometimes “Es ist gewisslich” are indicated.

FAITH is a trustful confidence
In God’s free grace reposing,
More than belief held by frail sense;
God as its Treasure choosing,
True Faith the heart and spirit fills,
Desireth only what God wills,
And trusts Him without doubting.

2 Who thus his heart with strength hath filled,
And trusts in God securely,
Who all His hopes on Christ doth build
Hath firm foundation surely.
Clothed in the Savior’s righteousness,
Cleansed by His blood, in fearlessness
A Christian journeys homeward.

3 This faith is not the work of man,
But they who seek, obtain it
Through prayer to God, Whose Spirit can
Create, increase, sustain it.
Works that are pleasing in His sight
Flow from the faith wrought by His might,
Without Him faith is worthless.

4 It is a shameful wicked dream
Mere faith to be admitting,
And yet with wicked works to teem,
For Christians most unfitting;
Who does so, let him freely know
His bliss is but an empty show [His faith…]
And will to hell convey him.

5 Lord, through Thy mercy let me be
An earnest Christian ever.
Purge me from vain hypocrisy,
Grant me the blest endeavor
To know and do Thy will divine
Then will my faith, a gift of Thine,
Illume my neighbor’s pathway.

GERMAN
Der Glaub ist eine Zuversicht
zu Gottes Gnad und Güte;
der bloße Beifall thut es nicht:
es muß Herz und Gemüthe
durchaus zu Gott gerichtet sein
und gründen sich auf ihn allein,
ohn Wanken und ohn Zweifel.

2 Wer sein Herz also stärkt und steift
im völligen Vertrauen
und Jesum Christum recht ergreift,
auf sein Verdienst kann bauen:
der hat des Glaubens rechte Art
und kann zur seligen Hinfahrt
sich schicken ohne Grauen.

3 Das aber ist kein Menschenwerk:
Gott muß es uns gewähren;

[so…geziemen]
