Friede, ach Friede, ach göttlicher Friede”

Here is my translation of the faith/justification hymn, “Friede, ach Friede, ach göttlicher Friede” (Bartholomäus Crasselius, d. 1724), from Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #392. Fischer, who categorizes it under “Peace of God,” finds it first in Freylinghausen 1704, and says that the author is identified by in Grischow-Kirchner, Nachricht . . ., p. 9; cf. Wetzel, Hymnopoeia IV, p. 84. It was later included in Crüger’s Praxis (1712) etc. It has a proper melody in Freylinghausen, but otherwise is commonly given with “Jesu hilf siegen, du Fürste des Lebens). Kümmerle says that the earliest form of the proper melody was widely considered too secular in style and thus entered most hymnals in the second, more ecclesiastical form.

PEACE! holy peace! filled with heavenly merit
The Father through Christ in the Spirit provides,
Filling the faithful in heart, mind, and spirit
In Christ, which to life everlasting abides—
A peace that will soothe all in Jesus believing,
Who, scorning all else, to Him only are cleaving.

2 Therefore, O peace-loving soul, now address thee
With faith in thy heart, to thy Jesus again;
All that’s above thee, with Christ, let possess thee,
Denying thyself and earth’s fleeting domain.
Take up the light yoke of thy Lord while thou livest,
And rest, sweetest rest, and true peace thou receivest.

3 Christ, Mediator of peace, suffered truly
To reconcile men with the Father above;
Take this to heart, O soul, rightly and duly
And see how thy Jesus doth show thee His love:
True peace by His blood freely flowing He brings thee,
And silenceth all the disquiet that stings thee.

4 Now for thy part, thou art bound to Him ever,
His ownership of thy whole life ne’er shall cease;
For He redeemed thee, becoming thy Savior,
Set thee in the cov’nant of grace and of peace:
Thyself and thy being to Jesus committing,
On Him set thy heart with a love never quitting.

5 Of His peace-fellows, His covenant sharing,
He doth true affection and faithfulness ask,
Therefore of all earthly comforts despairing,
And all that oppose Him, though fair be their mask,
Forsake thou the devil, the world, and transgression,
And flee what opposes the Savior’s confession.

6 Wisely and carefully must be rejected
Society wicked and sin-loving crowd,
Which with the lusts of the world are infected,
They fear not nor love the true God, but are proud;
For those who are joined to their vile congregation,
Shall go with them also to hell and damnation.

7 Love thou, and practice, whate’er Christ may tell thee,
Whatever He teacheth thee, do thou the same.
Let what His Word hates disgust and repel thee,
Peace thou wilt find and rest evermore claim.
Blessed are they who to Christ are devoted,
And live by His Word in true faith, unpolluted.

8 Jesus, Thou Captain of peace’s battalions,
O Ruler of Salem, lead into the fray,
That we may keep peace’s cov’nant with valiance,
And follow Thee faithfully on peace’s way.
Oh, let Thy good Spirit now mightily guide us,
To where our dear Father true peace shall provide us!

Friede, ach Friede, ach göttlicher Friede
vom Vater durch Christum im heiligen Geist,
welcher der Frommen Herz, Sinn und Gemüthe
in Christo zum ewigen Leben aufschleußt;
den sollen die gläubigen Seelen erlangen,
die Alles verläugnen und Jesu anhangen.

2 Richte deswegen, friedliebende Seele,
dein Herze im Glauben zu Jesu hinan;
was da ist droben bei Christo, erwähle,
verläugne dich selbst und den irdischen Plan.
Nimm auf dich das sanfte Joch Christi hienieden,
so findest du Ruhe und göttlichen Frieden.

3 Nahm doch der Mittler des Friedens viel Schmerzen
von wegen des Vaters Versöhnung auf sich:
nimm dies, o Seele, recht fleißig zu Herzen,
und siehe, was thut wohl dein Jesus für dich;
er bringet mit seinem Blut Friede zuwege,
und machet, daß alle Unruhe sich lege.

4 Nun dafür bist du ihm ewig verbunden,
du sollst dafür gänzlich sein Eigenthum sein;
weil er dir ewge Erlösung erfunden,
und schleußt dich in Gnaden- und Friedensbund ein:
drum siehe, daß du dich ihm gänzlich ergiebest,
und immer beständig von Herzen ihn liebest.

5 Siehe, von seinen FriedBundesgenossen
erfordert er Herzliche Liebe und Treu,
darum sollst du von dir Alles ausstoßen,
was seiner feindseligen Gegenpartei:
Welt, Teufel, und Sünde die mußt du nicht leiden,
was Jesus zuwider ist, fliehen und meiden.

6 Weislich und fleißig mußt du dich entschlagen
der bösen Gesellschaft und sündlichen Rott,
welche den weltlichen Lüsten nachjagen,
nicht fürchten und lieben den heiligen Gott;
denn die sich zu solchen Gottlosen gesellen,
die fahren mit ihnen hinunter zur Höllen.

7 Liebe und übe, was Jesus dich lehret,
und was er dir saget, dasselbige thu.
Hasse und lasse, was sein Wort verwehret,
so findest du Frieden und ewige Ruh.
Denn selig, die also sich jesu ergeben,
und gläubig und heilig nach seinem Wort leben.

8 Jesu, du Herzog der Friedens-Heerschaaren,
o König von Salem, ach zeuch uns nach dir,
daß wir den Friedensbund treulich bewahren,
im Wege des Friedens dir folgen allhier.
Ach laß uns doch deinen Geist kräftig regieren,
und dir nach im Frieden zum Vater hinführen.
