Prophete Jesu, du bist groß

Here is my translation of the hymn on Christ’s prophetic office, “Prophete Jesu, du bist groß” (Anonymous, 18th c.?), included in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch in a 9 stanza cento, omitting stanzas 7–8. Addressing the 2nd Person of the Trinity, it relates, and thus praises, Jesus in His office of prophet in the estates of His humiliation and exaltation, thus fitting it for Laetare Sunday and Exaudi. The origin of this cento before the Pennsylvania hymnal is obscure, as are other details about the hymn. It existed with both minor and major alterations, the latter form (e.g. in the Rostock hymnal of 1829) beginning “Groß bist du, Jesu, also Prophet.” The Pennsylvania, and thus Wisconsin, hymnals have an 18th c. source. The earliest instance available to the translator is the Hanover hymnal of 1745. The appointed melody is “Es ist das Heil uns kommen her.”

 

O Jesus, Prophet, Thou art great
In action and oration!
The Father’s bosom is Thy seat,
Yet, for the world’s salvation,
Thou didst present Thyself to all
A mighty Teacher, with the call
To be our Mediator.

2 Of Christ all prophets testified,
And so Thine office showeth
That what to us was prophesied
The world in Thee now knoweth,
For Thou art called a Teacher true,
A Master, and a Shepherd too,
And of our souls the Bishop.

3 This wast Thou in these latter days
When by the Father’s stirring,
Thou camest to our sin-wrought maze
To teach the lost and erring
How we should walk and live toward heav’n,
Thou wast all pow’r and Spirit giv’n,
And marked with oil of gladness.

4 As Shepherd Thou wast chiefly sent
To Isr’el’s House decaying,
To teach the lost sheep to repent,
And to return from straying;
There too Thy heart was faithful shown,
As at Thy Baptism God made known:
“This is My Son. Oh, hear Him!”

5 The wretched, broken, and contrite,
The captive, bound, and grieving,
Who nonetheless in God aright
As Christians are believing,
Refreshment, healing find in Thee,
Relief, release, and liberty,
The year of grace, and gladness.

6 Thy Gospel, grace and truth which brought,
Thou gav’st to spirits weary,
To gladden those who long were taught
By Moses’ preaching dreary;
Yet didst Thou also high uphold
God’s will, which in the Law is told,
Faith and repentance teaching.

7 And when the pow’r Thy Word possessed
By wonders was attended,
Thou by the crowds wast praised and blest,
For all Thy works that mended
The blind and deaf and lame, and those
In leprosy or demon’s throes—
Yea, those whom death had taken.

8 This office Thou hast still maintained
E’en in Thine exaltation,
Through Thine apostles’ voice unstained,
Who at Thine instigation
Were sent out into every land
When Thou up to the Father’s hand
In glory wast ascended.]

9 Thine office dost Thou still fulfill,
Thy prophets to us sending;
Praise God! This rock stands firm until
The world shall reach its ending.
The faithful teacher’s pure lips tell
That Thou all teachers dost excel:
The way to God Thou teachest!

10 My Jesus! Yes, Thou art alone
The long-awaited Savior,
Through whom God opted to make known
To us His light of favor.
Our Surety and Shepherd good,
Who leads the soul to heav’nly food
With gentle staff and easy.

11 O Lord, then lead and guide Thou me
To pastures of salvation,
Let Thy Word ever mightily
Be my heart’s consolation;
And when the world shall pass away
O Prophet, in that blessed day
Fulfill what Thou hast promised.

Dein Sitz ist deines Vaters Schooß: [Dein Thron]
jedoch, der Welt zu rathen,
hast du dich selber dieser Welt
als einen Lehrer dargestellt
in deinem Mittleramte.

2 Wie die Propheten allesammt
von Christo Zeugniß gaben; [Von dir das]
so zeiget dein Prophetenamt,
daß wir an dir nun haben,
was uns von dir versprochen wird. [auch noch verkündigt wird]
Du heißt ein Lehrer, Meister, Hirt,
und Bischof unsrer Seelen.

3 Du warst es durch des Vaters Rath [wurdst] [da du Gottes Rath]
in diesen letzten Tagen: [selbst auf der Erde lehrtest]

der uns Propheten sendet.
Gottlob! der feste Grund besteht,

10 Mein Jesu! ja du bist allein [Ja, Jesu, du bist in der That]
das Heil, das kommen sollte;
durch den Gott seinen Gnadenschein [und den uns Gott nach seinem Rath]
uns offenbaren wollte. [zum Segen schenken…]
Der Mittler und der Seelen Hirt, [Seelenhirt]
von dem mein Geist geweidet wird

11 So leite denn, und führe mich
auf eine grünen Weide!
Dein Wort sei immer kräftiglich
des Herzens Trost und Freude.
Und wenn die Welt einmal vergeht,
ach! so erfülle, mein Prophet!
