Wunderbarer Gnadenthron

Here is my translation of the Christmas hymn “Wunderbarer Gnadenthron” (Johann Olearius, 1671), #126 in the Ev.-Luth. Gesanagbuch. The hymn first appears in the author’s Singe-Kunst appointed for the Third Day of Christmas (according to the early Lutheran scheme for Christmas observances) and is based the Lesson taken from the prophecy of Isaiah ix. The appointed melody is “Singen wir aus Herzensgrund.”

MERCY-seat all wonderful,
God and Man adorable,
Son of God and Mary mild,
In Thy crib a little Child,
Mighty, Everlasting Word,
For Thy pow’r and glory, Lord,
By all Christendom adored.

2 Thou dost suffer poverty,
Giv’st us treasure heavenly;
Mighty God, art meager born,
Puttest hell and death to scorn.
All the world perceiveth now,
Yea, e’en all Thy foes see how
Wonderful, O Lord, art Thou.

3 Make Thy grace and faithfulness
Daily new, my soul to bless;
Be distress or death my lot,
God, my God, forsake me not!
Let Thy glorious majesty
And Thy wondrous favor be
My delight eternally.

GERMAN

Wunderbarer Gnadenthron,
Gottes und Marien Sohn,
Gott und Mensch, ein kleines Kind,
das man in der Krippe findt,
großer Held von Ewigkeit,
dessen Macht und Herrlichkeit
rühmt die ganze Christenheit.

2 Du bist arm, und machst zugleich
uns an Leid und Seele reich;
du wirst klein, du großer Gott,
und machst Höll und Tod zu Spott.
Aller Welt wird offenbar,
ja auch deiner Feinde Schaar,
daß du, Gott, bist wunderbar.

3 Laß mir deine Güt und Treu
täglich werden immer neu.
Gott, mein Gott, verlaß mich nicht,
wenn mich Noth und Tod anficht,
Laß mich deine Herrlichkeit,
deine Wundergütigkeit
schauen in der Ewigkeit.
