Das ist ein theures, werthes Wort

Here is my translation of the Jesus/Redeemer hymn “Das ist ein theures, werthes Wort” (Heinrich Georg Neuß, 1686) based on 1 Tim. 1:16, included in Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #139 in the section: “Offices and Life of Jesus.” It should not be confused with Gotter’s Advent hymn of the same first line. It first appears (with a couple differences, as noted in square brackets) in Neuß’s Heb-Opfer zum Bau der Hütten Gottes (1692) with the date “anno 86” and its own proper melody (Zahn 2408 below). In our present hymnal is appointed to be sung to “Machs mit mir, Gott, nach deiner Güt.”

 

THIS is a sure and precious word,
A word to cheer thee wholly:
The sinner’s hope is Christ the Lord,
He will instruct the lowly;

2 Christ Jesus welcomes those who pine,
Heals those with sickness ridden,
No invitation will decline
If only He be bidden;
This is a sure and precious word:
The sinner’s hope is Christ the Lord.

3 Christ Jesus is the Shepherd true,
He seeks the wand’rer ever,
The lost He doth restore anew—
He is the chosen Savior;
This is a sure and precious word:
The sinner’s hope is Christ the Lord.

4 Thee, Christ, God’s Son, with praise I greet!
Thou borest our transgression, [Thou Bondsman for us debtors]
Thou Paschal Lamb, Thou Mercy-seat,
To weary Consolation; [Thou Refuge for us murd’rers]
This is a sure and precious word:
The sinner’s hope is Christ the Lord.

5 Oh, grant me that this grace I own,
Of all my sin repenting,
That I, Thy sheep, may long for Thee
With ardor unrelenting,
And think upon this precious Word:
The surest hope is Christ the Lord. [The sinner’s hope . . .]
