Der zu des Vaters Rechten sitzt

 Here is my translation of the hymn on Christ’s office as high priest, “Der zu des Vaters Rechten sitzt” (P. F. Hiller, d. 1769) from Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #142. According to Fischer, it first appears in the author’s Geistliches Liederkästlein I (Stuttgart, 1762) and is based on 1 John 2:1. It should not be confused with Hiller’s similarly named “Mein Jesus sitzt zur rechten Hand,” a longer hymn translated by Henry Mills in his Horae Germanicae as “Our Jesus Now at God’s Right Hand.” The appointed melody is “Was Gott thut das ist wohlgethan.”

HE who sits on the Father’s right,
He for His own imploreth;
Thus they from wrath are sheltered quite
And soothed when sorrow poureth,
And from all need
And fear are freed,
And after death forever
Made heirs with Christ their Savior.

2 Lord Christ, the right is Thine alone
To be our intercessor;
Thou Priest before the sacred throne
Canst act for the transgressor;
No other blood
Hath ever flowed
To be our saving off’ring—
’Twas shed but in Thy suff’ring.

3 Therefore, O Righteous One, Thou art
Th’ Atonement with the Father;
Sin staineth every human heart
But Thine, God-Man, our Brother!
Thou art the Son,
Thou hast the throne
And in Thy name all-holy,
The promise resteth solely.

4 We honor Thee, we trust in Thee;
Thy people whom Thou gainedst
Sing Hallelujah! joyfully,
For Thou our death sustainedst.
Upon this ground
Let ever sound
For us Thy pray’rs and sighing,
E’en in the hour of dying!

Der zu des Vaters Rechten sitzt,
der bittet für die Seinen:
so sind sie vor dem Zorn beschützt,
getröstet in dem Weinen,
befreit von Noth,
erlöst vom Tod,
und dürfen nach dem Sterben
mit ihrem Heiland erben.

2 Herr Jesu, dir gebührt der Ruhm,
nur du kannst für uns beten;
du Priester in dem Heiligthum,
du kannst dein Volk vertreten;
kein anders Blut
ist uns zugut
zum Opfer je geflossen,
du hast's für uns vergossen.

3 Daher du die Versöhnung bist
beim Vater, der Gerechte;
da, was sonst Mensch heißt, Sünder ist,
und Engel deine Knechte;
du bist der Sohn,
du hast den Thron,
und nur in deinem Namen
ist die Verheißung Amen.

4 Wir ehren dich, wir glauben dir;
dein Volk, das du erworben,
jauchzt dir ein Hallelujah für,
weil du für uns gestorben.
Ach bitte du
nur immerzu
für uns aus diesem Grunde,
