Du wesentliches Wort (supplement to Winkworth)

Here, in stanzas 3 and 5, is my supplement to Miss Winkworth’s translation of the Christmas hymn “Du wesentliches Wort” (Laurentius Laurentii, 1700), from Evangelia Melodica for the Third Day of Christmas (in the old Lutheran scheme), that is, for the Christmas Gospel from John 1. The appointed melody is “O Gott du frommer Gott.”

O Thou essential Word,
Who wast from the beginning
With God, for Thou wast God;
Thou hope of all the sinning,
Sent down to save our race,
Most welcome, Lord, Thou art,
Redeemer, Fount of grace,
To this my longing heart.

2 Come, self-existent Word,
And speak Thou in my spirit!
The soul where Thou art heard
Doth endless peace inherit.
Thou Light that lightenest all,
Abide through faith in me,
Nor let me from Thee fall,
And seek no guide but Thee.

3 O Thou essential Word,
Who, ere the world’s foundation
Wast even then with God:
E’en then, to what compassion
For me Thou movèd wast!
Yea, Thou wast God as well;
Thus in the flesh Thou dost
Confound sin, death, and hell.

4 Ah! what hath stirred Thy heart,
What cry hath mounted thither,
And reached Thy heav’nly throne,
And drawn Thee, Savior, hither?
It was Thy wondrous love,
And my most utter need,
Made Thy compassions move,
Stronger than death indeed.

5 Thou art the Word, by whom
The whole world was created;
For all that is by Thee
From light hath been translated;
Oh, then! Thy kindness gave
Dear Savior, life to me,
And all I am and have,
I have received from Thee.

6 Then let me give my heart
To Him who loved me, wholly;
And live, while here I dwell,
To show His praises solely:
Yes, Jesus, from anew
This stony heart of mine,
Make it till death still true
To Thee, forever Thine.

7 Let naught be left within
But what Thy hand hath planted;
Root out the weeds of sin,
And quell the foe who haunted
My soul, and sowed the tares;
From Thee comes nothing ill,
O save me from his snares,
Make plain my pathway still.

8 Thou art the Life, O Lord,
And Thou its Light art only!
Let not Thy blessed rays
Still leave me dark and lonely.
Star of the East, arise!
Driuve all my clouds away,
Till earth’s dim twilight dies
Into the perfect day.

GERMAN

Du wesentliches Wort,
von Anfang her gewesen!
du, Gott, von Gott gezeugt!
von Ewigkeit erlesen
zum Heil der ganzen Welt,
o mein Herr Jesu Christ:
willkommen, der du mir
zum Heil geboren bist!

2 Komm, o selbständigs Wort!
und sprich in meiner Seelen,
daß mir's in Ewigkeit
an Trost nie solle sehlen;
im Glauben wohn in mir
und weiche nimmer nicht;
laß mich auch nicht von dir
abweichen, schönstes Licht!

3 Du wesentliches Wort
warst bei Gott, eh geleget
der Grund der großen Welt,
da sich dein Herz beweget
zur Liebe gegen mich;
ja, du warst selber Gott,
damit du machst im Fleisch
Sünd, Höll und Tod zu Spott.

4 Was hat, o Jesu dich
vom Anfang doch bewogen?
Was hat vom Himmels Thron
dich in die Welt gezogen?
Ach! deine große Lieb
und meine große Noth
hat deine Gluth entflammt,
die stärker als der Tod.

5 Du bist das Wort, wodurch
die ganze Welt formiret;
denn alle Dinge find
durch dich aus Licht geführet.
Ach so bin ich, mein Heil,
auch dein Geschöpf und Gab,
der Alles, was ich bin,
von dir empfangen hab.

6 Gieb, daß ich dir zum Dienst
mein ganzes Herz ergebe,
auch dir allein zum Preis
auf dieser Erden lebe:
ja, Jesu laß mein Herz
ganz neu geschaffen sein
und dir bis in den Tod
gewidmet sein allein.

7 Ach! laß nichts in mir sein,
was du nicht hast geschaffen:
reut alles Unkraut aus
und brich des Feines Wassen;
was bös, ist nicht von dir,
das hat der Feind gethan:
du aber führ mein Herz
und Fuß auf ebner Bahn.

8 Das Leben ist in dir,
und alles Licht des Lebens:
laß an mir deinen Glanz,
mein Gott, nicht sein vergebens!
Weil du das Licht der Welt:
so sei mein lebenslicht,
o Jesu, bis mir dort
dein Sonnenlicht anbricht.
