Here is my translation of the hymn, “Ich heb mein Augen sehnlich auf” (C. Becker, d. 1604), a metrical version of the 121st Psalm from Becker’s Psalter (1602). In the Evangelisch-Lutherisches Gesangbuch #48, the melody “Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir” is appointed, though it is perhaps well known that a proper melody composed for the hymn by Heinrich Schütz exists (which melody has also been fitted in a Lutheran hymnal to a versification of the Magnificat) and may be used to good effect especially by a choir using the full harmonization.
I LIFT my gaze with longing eye
And glimpse the tow'ring hills on high,
From whence to me, from heaven's seat,
My God descends with succor sweet.
2 My help comes from the Lord alone,
Whose heart is glad to make it known;
Both heav'n and earth His hands have made,
Round us He keeps His guard arrayed
3 He leads thee on the righteous way,
Nor suffers foot to slip or stray;
In God put all thy confidence,
He is thy sleepless, strong Defense.
4 The faithful Ward of Israel
Thy soul and body watcheth well,
He slumbers not by day or night,
Ne’er droops His eye nor dims His sight.
5 By grace, when any harm impends,
Thy faithful God thy life defends,
Beneath the shelter of His grace
Thou findest e’er thy surest place.
6 The heat of sun, the moon by night,
Shall never thee disturb nor smite;
God turns away all weights of grief,
To His own glory, thy relief.
