Ist Gott die Liebe wesentlich

Here is my translation of the hymn on love, “Ist Gott die Liebe wesentlich” (Johann Jacob Rambach, d. 1735), in GGELB #402 with melody assignment “Herr Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht” and omitting stanzas 2–6 (on love to God and love to self). It is not in Fischer’s lexicon. I find it in the author’s Geistreiches Haus-Gesang-Buch (1735), no. 424, p. 508, with title “On the love of God, of ourself, and of our neighbor, as the content of the whole Law,” where the melody “O Jesu Christ meins…” or “Dies sind die heilgen zehn Gebot” is appointed.

GOD is essential Love and true,
Man must reflect that image too,
With love and charity to all,
Here in this life we mortal call.

[2 Since God doth love, thou too must love,
Love’s way doth to requital move.
He gives Himself in love to thee;
Give Him thyself and like Him be.

3 He, as the highest Good, is due
From soul and spirit honor true,
And all the pow’rs that in us move
Should show themselves to Him in love.

4 Self-love is not forbidden too,
Provided it be not undue;
If thou wilt love thyself, then mark:
Man, do so as God’s handiwork.

5 Pursue thy godly livelihood,
And hold God as the highest Good;
Thy heart His temple make alone,
Let soul and body be His own.

6 Seek not what flesh and blood desire,
For ’tis false love and deadly fire;
All yield to God, to thee the rest.
Then lov’st thou rightly and art blest.]

7 As thine own self thy neighbor love,
His soul’s salvation let thee move,
Forsake all hate and enmity
And from all selfishness be free.

8 On thine own good set not much store,
But seek thy neighbor’s good the more;
Let thy good works before him shine,
That he too may to good incline.

9 What thou wouldst have done unto thee,
Do unto others equally;
As thine own self thy neighbor love,
With all thy heart thy kindness prove.

10 In love give to thy neighbor heed,
His cause defend in every need.
Forbear not for all men to sigh:
This love delights the Father’s eye.

11 Thou findest not the pow’r in thee,
So trust in Jesus, who, since He
Is Love Himself, the same doth give,
And teaches how one ought to live.

12 Thy hindrances He takes away
And makes thee stronger day by day;
From heaven floweth into thee
What thou canst not, and plenteously.

13 Then love will be no burd’ning art,
Since thou hast Jesus in thy heart.
God is with thee, His house art thou,
And naught but love flows from thee now.

Gott Lob, daß er uns Menschen liebt

Here is my translation of the Holy Word hymn, “Gott Lob, daß er uns Menschen liebt” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #225 with melody assignment “O Jesu Christe, wahres Licht.” The Church Hymn Book (1816ff.) provides the English rendering “A precious gift on man bestowed,” probably the work of the same author, in five stanzas of Long Meter, somewhat altered as to content.

TO God be praise, who loves our race,
And to us gives His Word in grace;
It is our heritage most bright,
Shows us salvation, life, and light.

2 The Bible doth to us make plain
All that had else concealèd lain;
It shows that Jesus Christ, God’s Son,
Is man’s Redeemer—He alone.

3 The Bible is of greatest worth,
God’s doctrine doth it show the earth,
It is for aye the highest Good,
Makes glad the heart and hope supplies.

4 How blest are they that this believe!
They find what none can break or thieve;
Not e’en the foe with pow’r and plot
Can overpow’r a single jot.

5 He that the Bible’s truth will hold
Hath found the weapon bright and bold,
By which he shall in battle win
Against the devil, world, and sin.

6 Preserve, O Lord, to us Thy Word
And let it ever, undeterred,
Among and in us mighty be,
Thine be the praise eternally.

CHURCH HYMN BOOK
A Precious gift on man bestow'd,
That is to have the word of God;
The sure infallible record
That shews the counsels of the Lord.

2 That book it has to man reveal'd,
That which was to the world conceal'd.
That book reveal'd the glorious plan
By which God sav'd the race of man.

3 Of all the treasures here on earth,
This book is of the greatest worth;
From age to age it handeth down,
As much as need to man be known.

4 The Bible is a light divine!
It makes a world of darkness shine;
And ev'ry chapter, line and page,
Can cast a light on ev'ry age.

5 Bless'd are the rays this light doth give,
And bless'd are they who do receive;
This blessed light, this blessed heat,
Can make our hopes and joys complete.

Du unbegreiflichs höchstes Gut

Here is my translation of the hymn on union with God, “Du unbegreiflichs höchstes Gut” (Joachim Neander, d. 1680), in NEGB #205 with melody assignment “O Jesu Christe, wahres Licht,” originally published in 6 stanzas in the author’s Glaub- und Liebes-Übung (Bremen, 1679) with title “The one crying as a hart, Ps. 42:2,” soon taken up into Halberstadt 1699, Freylinghausen 1704, Praxis 1712, etc. It was further expanded by Leopold Franz Friedrich Lehr with 6 stanzas of responses by the Savior, transforming it into a dialog-hymn, e.g., in Wernigeröde Gsb 1735. I give this as an alternate below.

O HIGHEST Good, all things above,
To which my soul doth cling in love:
I thirst, O Fount of Life, for Thee.
Oh, help! Oh, run! Oh, come to me!

2 I am a hart that pants for thirst,
O Christ, with mighty heat I burst,
But Thou a cooling water art:
Refresh this deer so faint at heart!

3 To Thee with silent voice I grieve;
I groan, O Lord! my sigh perceive,
Perceive it, O Thou Fount of grace,
Refresh my soul, hot from the chase.

4 I have no water in supply;
Lord Jesus! draw me to Thee nigh—
For Thee great thirst is driving me,
Oh, to be joined as one in Thee!

5 Where art Thou then, O Bridegroom mine?
Where feedest Thou, O Lamb divine?
At what sweet water liest? Oh, where?
I thirst! Oh, let me join Thee there!

6 I can do naught, I am too frail,
I cry, I thirst, to Thee I wail:
The hart requires Thy draft divine,
For Thou art his, and he is Thine!

LEHR’S EXPANDED FORM:

The Soul:
O highest Good, all things above,
To which my soul doth cling in love:
I thirst, O Fount of Life, for Thee.
Oh, help! Oh, run!
Oh, come to me!

The Savior:
2 Who is’t that with such anguish whines?
Is’t thou, dear soul that seeking pines?
I am not far; nay, I am nigh,
With all My bounties from on high.

The Soul:
3 I am a hart that pants for thirst,
O Christ, with mighty heat I burst,
But Thou a cooling water art:
Refresh this deer so faint at heart!

The Savior:
4 Come, weary lamb! Here is My Blood,
Which does the soul’s affliction good.
Unhesitating drink it down
And treat it as thy drink alone.

The Soul:
5 To Thee with silent voice I grieve;
I groan, O Lord! my sigh perceive,
Perceive it, O Thou Fount of grace,
Refresh my soul, hot from the chase.

The Savior:
6 I know, O soul, thy torments all,
How many tears thine eyes let fall;
Yet none is felt or falls in vain;
Here let thine eyes their comfort gain.

The Soul:
7 I have no water in supply;
Lord Jesus! draw me to Thee nigh—
For Thee great thirst is driving me,
Oh, to be joined as one with Thee!

The Savior:
8 I draw thee, soul, most certainly!
Yea, this thy feeble, woeful plea
Is in itself a mighty leap:
Thou com’st, and I thy soul will keep.

The Soul:
9 Where art Thou then, O Bridegroom mine?
Where feedest Thou, O Lamb divine?
At what sweet water liest? Oh, where?
I thirst! Oh, let me join Thee there!

The Savior:
10 There—there I lie, and there I feed,
Where for My help My people plead:
There springs the fountain of My grace,
Where help is found no other place.

The Soul:
11 I can do naught, I am too frail,
I cry, I thirst, to Thee I wail:
The hart requires Thy draft divine,
For Thou art his, and he is Thine!

The Savior:
12 Dear soul, if thou art well disposed,
Then drink, and let thy thirst be
Here is My heart! I still am thine,
And thou shalt evermore be Mine.

GERMAN
Du unbergreiflich höchstes gut,
An welchem liebt mein herz und muth,
Ich dürst, o lebensquell, nach dir,
Ach hilf! ach lauf! ach komm zu mir.

2 Wer winselt denn so ängstiglich?
Bist du's, a seele! suchst du mich?

Und keiner ist umsonst geschehn;

An welchem brünnlein ruhest du?

12 Wohlan! so bist du recht geschickt,
So trinke denn und werd erquickt.
Hier ist mien herz! ich bleibe dein;
Und du sollst ewig meine seyn.

O Jesu, Gottes Lämmelein

Here is my translation of the Passion/Death hymn, “O Jesu, Gottes Lämmelein” (asc. Martin Moller, d. 1606), in ELGB #113. Fischer says the hymn is found in Martin Moller’s art-of-dying book, Manuale de Præparatione ad mortem (Görlitz, 1596) among the 11 hymns which Moller describes as “made by other spiritual people.” Nevertheless, in hymnals it is ascribed almost universally to Moller, including in Crüger’s Praxis pietatis melica 1648. In Balthasar Schnurr’s Schöne, Christliche Andächtige Reimen Gebetlein (Strassburg, 1615), the hymn is marked: “J. Pollio ex V[eit] T[heodoricus],” i.e., Veit Dietrich. Two further stanzas are added in Vopelius’s Gsb 1682. The appointed melody is “O/Herr Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht.”

O JESUS, Lamb of God divine,
In life and death I’m ever Thine;
I pray Thee, let me, like to Thee,
An heir within Thy kingdom be.

2 What purpose had Thy mortal dread,
Thy many wounds and lashes red,
If I might not in bliss with Thee
Partake of them eternally?

3 Why shut away Thy life and limb,
And leave it in a cavern grim,
If by Thy death, O God my Stay,
My death should not be done away?

4 Therefore, O Jesus, be Thou nigh,
Sure help and comforts to supply;
Forsake me not, O Christ, my God,
For I am washed in Thy dear blood.

5 In peace grant me to fall asleep
And so my rest in Thee to keep;
Grant me to see Thy face, O Lord,
A blessed end to me afford.

6 I pray Thee by Thy bitter pain,
Let this my final wish remain,
And I will offer praise to Thee,
My God, for all eternity.

GERMAN
O Jesu, Gottes Lämmelein:
ich leb odr sterb, so bin ich dein.
Ich bitt, laß mich mit dir zugleich
ein Erbe sein in deinem Reich.

2 Denn was war sonst dein Sterbensnoth,
so viel Striemen und Wunden roth:
wenn ich nicht in der Seligkeit
genießen solt die Ewigkeit?

3 Warum hast du dein Leib und Lebn
im Grab verschlossen und aufgebn:
wenn nicht mein Tod durch deinen Tod
verjagt soll werdn, du treuer Gott?

4 Darum, o Jesu, steh mir bei,
gewissen Trost und Hülf verleih;
verlaß den nicht, Herr Jesu Christ,
der mit deim Blut gewaschen ist.

5 Im Frieden laß mich schlafen ein,
und in dir haben Ruhe fein;
dein Antlitz laß mich sehen, Herr,
ein seligs Ende mir bescher.

6 Ich bitt durchs bittre Leiden dein;
laß das mein letztes Wünschen sein:
so will ich loben allezeit
dich, o mein Gott, in Ewigkeit.

Here is my translation of the faith/justification hymn, “Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ / daß du der Sünder Heiland bist” (Ernst Gottlieb Woltersdorf, d. 1761), from Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #391, not to be confused with Luther’s Nativity hymn “Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ, / daß du Mensch geboren bist.” It first appears in Wolter’s Sämtliche Neue Lieder (Berlin, 1767) with the title verse 1 Tim. 1:15, “This is a trustworthy saying . . .” In the same collection, notes Fischer, there is a “praise hymn for children” on Is. 40:11 beginning “Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ, daß du Kinder Heiland bist.” The appointed melody according to Fischer is “Herr Gott, dich loben alle wir” (Old 100th), but in the Wisconsin hymnal, “O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht.”

ALL praise, O Jesus Christ, to Thee,
Who wilt the sinner’s Savior be!
All praise be for Thy precious blood
Which for our souls doth wondrous good!

2 All praise be to the Father’s plan,
Who sent Thee to the world of man,
And in His mercy deigned to place
On Thee the debts of all our race!

3 All praises to the Spirit be,
Who points us, Jesus, unto Thee!—
To Thee, the great Physician, who
Canst by Thy wounds all flesh renew.

4 Praise God! Then there is hope for me!
My God and Lord, I trust in Thee,—
In Thee, who hast the balance paid
When on Thyself my debt was laid.

5 Debts I inherit none too small;
Not half corrupt am I, but all,
And nothing ever find in me
That I may gain my liberty.

6 Praise God! For I have rescued been,—
I, who am sickly and unclean,
Whom fear and shame and doubt attack,
Who every pow’r for goodness lack.

7 My Lord receives the sinful man!
I come to Him, howe’er I can.
For he who seeks himself to save
Reviles the blood that Jesus’ gave.

8 The ailing make themselves not well,
But of their wounds their healer tell;
Thus, Lamb of God, I come to Thee:
Thou wilt perform Thy work in me.

9 Forgiveness all my heart amends,
Its blots out fear and sorrow ends,
It calms the heart, illumines sense,
And fills with sweetest confidence.

10 The soul is loosed from all that binds,
It lauds and sings, and meanwhile finds
The Spirit’s quick’ning pow’r within,
The bounteous fruit of faith to win.

11 So must true faith in Jesus’ blood
In sinners poor make all things good,
And any ill that yet is left
But drives us to the Helper deft.

12 All praise, O Jesus Christ, to Thee,
Who wilt the sinner’s Savior be!
All praise, high Ruler, for Thy will
To be the sinner’s Savior still!

GERMAN

Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ,
daß du dir Sünder Heiland Bist
und daß dein unschätzbares Blut
an unsern Seelen Wunder thut.

2 Gelobet sei des Vaters Rath,
der dich der Welt geschenket hat,
und weil er viel Erbarmen hegt,
dir alle Schulden aufgelegt.

3 Gelobet sey der heilge Geist,
der uns zu dir, o Jesu, weist,
zu dir, du Arzt, der Jedermann
durch seine Wunden heilen kann.

4 Gott Lob, nun ist auch Rath für mich;
was mir an meiner Rechnung fehlt.

5 Die Schulden sind mir angeerbt,
ich bin nicht halb, nein, ganz verderbt;
und treffe bei mit gar nichts an,
das ich zur Lösung zahlen kann.

6 Gott Lob, daß ich nun weiß wohin,
ich, der ich krank und unrein bin,
den Furcht und Schaam und Zweifel quält,
dem alle Kraft zum Guten fehlt.

7 Mein Jesus nimmt die Sünder an;
ich komme zu ihm, wie ich kann;
denn wer sich selber besser macht,
von dem wird Christi Blut veracht't.

**8 Der Kranke wird nicht erst gesund.
Er mach dem Arzt die Seuche kund.
So komm ich, Gottes Lamm, zu dir.
Ich weiß, du thust dein Amt an mir.

9 Vergebung heilt mein ganzes Herz,

in armen Sündern alles gut,
und was noch Böses übrig bleibt,
ist Noth, die uns zum Helfer treibt.

12 Gelobet seist du, Jesu Christ,
daß du der Sünder Heiland bist;
und daß du hocherhabner Fürst,
der Sünder Heiland bleiben wirst.

Mein Gott, die Sonne geht herfür

Here is my translation of the Sunday Morning hymn, “Mein Gott, die Sonne geht herfür” (Benjamin Schmolck, d. 1737), from Ev.-Luth. Gesangbuch #325, originally from the author’s Der lustige Sabbath (1712), in the appendix of weekly morning and evening hymns. Fischer records J. P. Lange (Reformed scholar) as calling it “a legal[istic] meditation without lyrical power.” In its simplicity and meter it is reminiscent of ancient office hymns. The appointed melody is “O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht,” which in Layriz is “Herr Jesu Christ . . .”

MY God, the sun arises now,
In me the very Sun be Thou,
The Sun of righteousness within
To drive away the shades of sin.

2 For Thee my first bring,
My heart belongs to Thee, my King,
Oh, come Thyself and dwell in me,
This temple sanctify for Thee!

3 Grant me to keep my way from sin,
Ere to Thy temple I go in
With all Thy faithful Christian band,
That holy I before Thee stand.

4 Prepare my heart and mouth and hand
And make me wise to understand,
That I Thy Word devoutly hear,
And so Thy glorious name revere.

5 All firmly in my heart enthrone,
Lest I a hearer be alone,
Meanwhile Thy strength bestow on me,
That I a doer too may be.

6 Help me throughout this holy day
With soul and body rest alway,
Let me the worldlings’ way forsake,
Who sinfully Thy Sabbath break.

7 So will I go rejoicingly
Within Thy house to be with Thee
My heart with fitting garments dressed,
O Holy Trinity most blest!

daß ich nicht nur ein Hörer bin;
verleih mir deine Kraft dabei, [Verleihe deine…]
daß ich zugleich ein Thäter sei.

6 Hilf, daß ich diesen ganzen Täg

wo ich bei dir zu Hause bin,
mein Herz ist willig und bereit,
o heilige Dreieinigkeit!

Ich armer Mensch gar nichtes bin

Here is my translation of the poem or hymn “Ich armer Mensch gar nichtes bin” (J. Gigas, 1564), or “…doch gar nichts bin,” a versified supplication of one who is near death. It is based on a Latin elegaic Precatio by Philip Melanchthon dating to 1555  (See Wackernagel 1:457). The six couplets which comprise the original form of the lyric are first seen at the end of an exposition by Gigas of the hymn, “Ein Kindelein so löbelich” which was published in 1564. The tune normally appointed for it in hymnals is “O Jesu Christ, meins Lebens Licht” or “Herr Jesu Christ, wahr Mensch und Gott.”

I, WRETCHED man, am naught, I own.
    God’s Son remains my gain alone,
My hope—that He true Man was made,
    My ransom—’twas His blood that paid.

2. O God the Father, govern me
    With Thy good Spirit constantly;
Allow Thy Son, my Life and Stay,
    To dwell within my heart alway.

3. Oh, when the final hour I see,
    Take me, Lord Jesus Christ, to Thee!
For Thine I am, and mine Thou art—
    To meet Thee soon how longs my heart!
Amen.

GERMAN
Ich armer Mensch gar nichtes bin,
Gotts Sohn allein ist mein Gewinn.
Daß er Mensch wordn, das ist mein Trost;
Er hat mich durch sein Blut erlöst.
O Gott Vater, regier du mich
Mit deinem Geiste stetiglich.
Laß deinen Sohn, mein Trost und Lebn,
Allzeit in meinem Herzen schwebn;
Amen.
