Lobet und preiset den Schöpfer des Himmels und Erden

Here is my translation of the seasonal praise hymn, “Lobet und preiset den Schöpfer des Himmels und Erden” (? Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #245 with melody assignment “Lobe den Herren, den mächtigen König der Ehren” and title “On the seasons of the year.” Despite the title, only summer is expounded on, from which we may surmise that several other stanzas, omitted or unwritten, would have treated the other seasons. This is the final hymn of NEGB’s first edition. The 2nd adds in an appendix a few more common hymns, already translated. The hymn is marked with the cipher of a colon (:.) and period which may be taken as the typographer’s erstatz double-dagger and period (‡.) otherwise employed to signify the works of Paul Henkel, especially since the German text exhibits characteristics of his style (if I may say so) and appears nowhere else to my knowledge.

PRAISE and adore ye the Maker of earth and of heaven,
Who summer, winter, and all the year’s seasons hath given!
Come, glorify
Him praised by angels on high,
By love and thankfulness driven.

2 Lo, the fair summer with bounties so fruitfully raining,
By our kind heavenly Father’s most gracious ordaining!
Praise and adore
Him who doth bid you implore,
For so He gives, all sustaining.

3 Lo, the green field and the pasture and meadow-land glorious!
More glorious yet are the sights that confront the victorious:
Beauteous and fair
Shall be the holy ones’ share
When we behold Him before us.

4 God’s loving care for all creatures in summer suffices,
Since He hath fashioned all things, and His will so devises
Them to sustain,
So doth He gen’rously reign;
Therefore my praise to Him rises!

5 God, who sustainest my body, Thy bounties bestowing,
Oh, grant all that I receive may this lesson be showing:
From Thee alone
Comes every good I have known:
Praise to Thee only is owing.

dieweil er alles erschaffen, so war es sein Wille;

 Here is my translation of the harvest thanksgiving hymn, “Wir preisen heute Gottes Gnad” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #238 with melody assignment “Es ist gewisslich an der Zeit.”

GOD’S grace today we glorify
With gladsome heart and spirit,
And celebrate our Lord Most High
Whose love, without our merit,
Hath blest us with all that we need,
And constantly doth aid and speed
What for our life is useful.

We have been spared by God, our Shield,
Who safety hath supplied us,
Preserved the fruit upon the field,
Which now again provide us
The sustenance for man and beast;
Our God forsaketh not the least,
Now to His name be glory!

3 God hath remembered us in love,
Therefore to us hath given
The joyous blessing from above
And graced this earth from heaven,
He gives us clothing, food, and drink,
Wherefore with thanks of Him we think
And for His love we thank Him.

4 Our handiwork the Lord hath blessed
And by His hand it groweth;
He gives us strength to do what’s best,
And once again bestoweth
What shall our life with gladness fill;
That is our God’s intention still;
We praise Him for His kindness.

5 Our Father’s heart on us is set;
He loves us and receives us
And gladly pardons all our debt
And His good Spirit gives us,
Who makes our understanding bright,
And shows us Christ, our Life and Light,
Our Way, and our Salvation.

6 With all our heart we thank our God
For His dear Word and teaching;
With heart and lips we praise and laud,
His glories loudly preaching
For all the good that He has shown;
He is our highest Good alone,
To Him be glory ever!

GERMAN
Wir preisen heute Gottes Gnad
mit freudigem Gemüthe:
Preis dem, der uns gesegnet hat
aus lauter Treu und Güte
mit allem, was uns nützlich ist,
und schenkt uns auch zu jeder Frist
was unserm Leben dienet!

2 Er hat uns wiederum verspart,
gefristet unser Leben,
die Früchte auf dem Feld bewahrt,
die uns nun wieder geben
die Nahrung beid für Mensch und Vieh;
er, unser Gott, verläßt uns nie;
wir priesen seinen Namen.

3 Gott hat in Lieb an uns gedacht,
drum hat er uns gegeben
den Segen, der uns fröhlich macht,
auf Erden hier zu leben.
Er schenkt uns Kleider, Speis und Trank,
ein jeder sag ihm Lob und Dank
und danket seiner Liebe!

4 Er segnet unser Hände-Werk,
er läßts iuns wohl gedeihen,
er giebt zum Guten Kraft und Stärk
und schenket uns von neuen,
was unser Leben glücklich macht;
das ist von Gott uns zugedacht;
wir preisen seine Güte.

5 Er ist der Vater der uns liebt,
in Liebe an uns denket,
der uns gern alle Schuld vergibt
und seinen Geist uns schenket;
der uns erleuchtet den Verstand,
der uns macht Jesum Christ bekannt:
der Weg, das Heil und Leben.

6 Wir danken Gott von Herzensgrund
für dies sein Wort und Lehre;
wir preisen ihn mit Herz und Mund,
wir geben ihm die Ehre
für alles Gute daß er thut,
er ist ja unser höchstes Gut,
drum sei ihm ewig Ehre.

Ach, heiliger, gerechter Gott

Here is my translation of the general (national) distress hymn, “Ach, heiliger, gerechter Gott” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #237 with melody assignment “Es ist das Heil uns kommen her.” An analogous hymn in the subsequent Church Hymn Book (Va., 1816ff.) was not immediately apparent.

ALAS, O holy, righteous God!
Should not we faint in spirit
Before the threat’ning of Thy rod,
And scourges which we merit?
For all our land is laid beneath
The peril of Thy fearsome wrath.
Oh, hear our lamentation!

2 How righteous were Thy judgment, Lord—
We never could deny it,
But must confess with one accord,
Our sins well justify it—
If every curse and threat should fall
On us, and doom us sinners all,
Which in Thy Word is written.

3 And if our land in blood be drowned,
A gruesome inundation,
And if within it naught be found
But death and devastation
As is the case in other lands,
Where everything in ruin stands,
We would be paid most justly.

4 The Lord hath called us many a day
To penance and amending,
But stubbornly we go our way,
Resisting and offending.
Before, He gave us peace and rest
And all our works and labors blessed,
And gave us all we needed.

5 His Word and Spirit He bestows,
The Word of folly rids us;
The Spirit strength and succor shows,
To do whate’er He bids us.
How oft we hear Him knock outside,
Desiring that we open wide
Our heart, to be His dwelling.

6 Yet vanity and fleshly lust
And worldly fondness hollow
On earth are common as the dust,
And we that impulse follow—
That wicked impulse found within,
Which only makes us fond of sin,
And from the truth distracts us.

7 Truth’s mockery receives its rod
At last, as men see clearly;
Thou art in truth the righteous God,
And sin rebukest dearly.
Thou visitest iniquity
With which men have offended Thee
And earned this heavy chast’ning.

8 Yes, Lord, we have, with sins defiled,
Deserved in grief to perish,
Yet Jesus hath us reconciled,—
Thy Son, whom Thou dost cherish.
Then judge us not, we beg of Thee,
Nor thrust us evermore from Thee,
Nor let us ever perish.

9 Forgive our trespasses, we pray,
For Christ the Mediator;
Thy Spirit send to be our stay
And help our fallen nature
To do what Thy commandments tell,
Then we will walk before Thee well,
And in Thy way continue.

GERMAN
Ach heiliger, gerechter Gott,
ach sollten wir nicht zagen,
da uns nun drohet große Noth,
und wohlverdiente Plagen?
Est steht ja unser ganzes Land
in recht gefährlichem Zustand,
wie leider zu beklagen.

2 Ach wie gerecht wär dein Gericht!
wir müßtens ja gestehen,
wir konntens ewig leugnen nicht,
es wird uns recht geschehen:
wenn uns sollt treffen jeder Fluch,
den uns beschreibt das Bibel-Buch,
der allen Sünder drohet.

3 Und müßt auch unser ganzes Land
in seinem Blute baden,
und wäre es mit nichts bekannt
als Leibs und Seelen Schaden,
so wies in andern Ländern steht,
da alles ins Verderben geht,
so wär es recht belohnet.

4 Der Herr hat uns gerufen lang,
zur Buß und bessern Leben,
wir aber gehen unsern Gang,
ihm stets zu widerstreben;
bisher schenkt er uns Fried und Ruh,
die Nahrung reichlich noch darzu,
und was wir sonst bedarfen.

5 Er schenket uns sein Wort und Geist,
das Wort uns underweiset,
der Geist uns Kraft und Beistand leist
zu thun, was er uns heißet,
wie oftmals klopft er bei uns an,
er will, daß ihm werd aufgethan
das Herz, darinn zu wohnen.

6 Doch Eitelkeit und Fleisches-Lust,
Hoffart und der Weltliebe,
das bleibt am besten uns bewußt,
wir folgen nur dem Triebe;
dem Triebe, dem sehr bösen Trieb,
der uns nur macht die Sünde lieb,
und zieht uns von der Wahrheit.

7 Doch endlich trifft der Wahrheit Spott,
wie manche es empfinden;
du bist doch der gerechte Gott,
drum strafest du die Sünden;
du suchest heim die Missethat,
damit man dich beliedigt hat,
und deine Straf verdienet.

8 Wir habens, Herr, ja wohl verdient,
daß wir in Noth verderben,
doch warst du, Herr, mit uns versöhnt
durch deines Sohnes Sterben.
Ach geh nicht mit uns ins Gericht,
verstoß uns von dir ewig nicht,
laß uns nicht ewig sterben.

9 Vergieb uns alle Missethat
um unsers Mittlers Willen;
schenk deinen Geist, schenk Hilf und Rath,
so werden wir erfüllen
und thun, was fordert dein Gebot,
dann werden wir vor dir, o Gott,
in deinem Wege gehen.

Gott Lob, daß er uns Menschen liebt

Here is my translation of the Holy Word hymn, “Gott Lob, daß er uns Menschen liebt” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #225 with melody assignment “O Jesu Christe, wahres Licht.” The Church Hymn Book (1816ff.) provides the English rendering “A precious gift on man bestowed,” probably the work of the same author, in five stanzas of Long Meter, somewhat altered as to content.

TO God be praise, who loves our race,
And to us gives His Word in grace;
It is our heritage most bright,
Shows us salvation, life, and light.

2 The Bible doth to us make plain
All that had else concealèd lain;
It shows that Jesus Christ, God’s Son,
Is man’s Redeemer—He alone.

3 The Bible is of greatest worth,
God’s doctrine doth it show the earth,
It is for aye the highest Good,
Makes glad the heart and hope supplies.

4 How blest are they that this believe!
They find what none can break or thieve;
Not e’en the foe with pow’r and plot
Can overpow’r a single jot.

5 He that the Bible’s truth will hold
Hath found the weapon bright and bold,
By which he shall in battle win
Against the devil, world, and sin.

6 Preserve, O Lord, to us Thy Word
And let it ever, undeterred,
Among and in us mighty be,
Thine be the praise eternally.

CHURCH HYMN BOOK
A Precious gift on man bestow'd,
That is to have the word of God;
The sure infallible record
That shews the counsels of the Lord.

2 That book it has to man reveal'd,
That which was to the world conceal'd.
That book reveal'd the glorious plan
By which God sav'd the race of man.

3 Of all the treasures here on earth,
This book is of the greatest worth;
From age to age it handeth down,
As much as need to man be known.

4 The Bible is a light divine!
It makes a world of darkness shine;
And ev'ry chapter, line and page,
Can cast a light on ev'ry age.

5 Bless'd are the rays this light doth give,
And bless'd are they who do receive;
This blessed light, this blessed heat,
Can make our hopes and joys complete.

Gott Lob, daß er uns Menschen liebt
und uns die liebe Bibel gibt,
die Bibel unser bestes Theil
zeigt uns das Leben, Licht und Heil.

2 Die Bibel macht uns offenbar,
was allen sonst verborgen war,
sie zeiget uns daß Jesus Christ
der ganzen Welt Erlöser ist.

3 Die Bibel ist von großem Werth,
sie zeigt uns, was Gott selber lehrt,
sie ist und bleibt das höchste Gut,
erfreut das Herz, gibt Trost und Muth.

4 Wohl dem, der an die Bibel glaubt,
der findet was ihm niemand raubt;
der Satan selbst mit Macht und List
dazu auch nicht vermögend ist.

5 Wer sich nur hält zur Bibel-Lehr,
der findt daran die beste Wehr,
damit er endlich überwindt
den Teufel, Welt und alle Sünd.

6 Erhalt uns, Herr, dein heilig Wort,
und laß dasselbe immerfort
bei uns und in uns kräftig sein,
zu deiner Ehr und Preis allein.

He gives us drink and food,
Our every need addressing.
May He His Spirit send
With His dear Word in love,
To guide us till our end
To rest here and above.

Gott Lob, daß ich den Tag vollbracht

Here is my translation of the evening hymn, “Gott Lob, daß ich den Tag vollbracht” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #165 with melody assignment “Es ist gewisslich an der Zeit.” It forms a counterpart to his morning hymn, “Gott Lob, daß er mich letzte Nacht” treated recently.

TO God be praise, now ends the day!
By grace God hath sustained me;
His angel, who hath watched my way,
This night as well defend me!
God stretch o’er me His shelter blest,
That I may sleep in perfect rest
Until the day returneth!

2 Dear God, how many souls this day
Have from this world departed,
And I, thy lowly child, yet may
Remain here, joyful-hearted!
Therefore, dear Father, Thee I praise,
And pray Thee still for all my days
In Thy good grace preserve me.

3 For Jesus’ sake I Thee implore,
My sins and guilt forgive me,
That I may justly them abhor
And they may duly grieve me;
Thy Spirit with His brightness send,
To strengthen me and help to lend
To live a life more godly.

4 Confiding in my Savior’r Word,
To sleep I now commend me,
And certainly may rest assured
That He will still defend me,
And grant me rest and sweet repose.
Hereat my weary eyes I close,
And in God’s name I slumber.

Gott Lob, daß ich den Tag vollbracht

2 Ach, lieber Gott, wie manche sind,

Drum, lieber Vater, preis ich dich,

laß meinen Jesum walten;

Gott Lob, daß er mich letzte Nacht

Here is my translation of the morning hymn, “Gott Lob, daß er mich letzte Nacht” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #159 with melody assignment “Es ist das Heil uns kommen her.”

TO God be praise, who through the night
In boundless love and favor
Hath guarded me from harm and fright
And shown again as ever
That I, though wretched, have His love,
And He this morning from above
The new day’s light hath given!

2 In quiet peace I lay and slept,
Beneath Thy grace defended;
Thou hast o’er me Thy vigil kept
And when the night was ended
Awakened me to morn’s fair hour,
That jofyul, with replenished pow’r
I may go to my labor.

3 To Thee, dear Father, thanks I say
For faithfulness shown to me.
Within Thy light and on Thy way
Still lead me and work through me.
Give strength to pass the day for Thee,
And so to serve Thee faithfully
As Thou hast me commanded.

4 Forgive me all my sins anew
For Jesus’ sake, I pray Thee,
And let me Thy commandments do
And as thy child obey Thee,
And follow in my Savior’s way,
So that my eyes may every day
Be fixed alone on Jesus.

Gott Lob, daß er mich letzte Nacht
aus großer Lieb und Treue

daß er mich armen Mensch noch liebt,

2 Ich lag und schlief in stiller Ruh,
dein Gnad hat mich bedecket;

3 Ich lob und preise, Vater, dich,

Wie reichlich wird dort dem belohnt

Here is my translation of the heaven/eternal life hymn, “Wie reichlich wird dort dem belohnt” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #150 with melody assignment “Wie schön leucht uns der Morgenstern.” Its theme more particularly is the various heavenly rewards received by Christians for their good works, or as one source puts it, “degrees of glory corresponding to differences of work and fidelity here on earth, producing praise to God but no envy (see 2 Cor. 9:6; Matt. 20:23).” It is an exhortatio positiva forming a counterpart to the negativa in Henkel’s previous hymn on the Final Judgment. The Church Hymn Book (1816ff.) adapts it in 9 stanzas of Long Meter as “Exceeding Greet Is the Reward.”

WHAT rich rewards will He possess
Who seeketh here for godliness,
A Christian life pursuing;—
Who strove and struggled morn and eve
Till he was given to perceive
How toilsome is the doing:
How sour,
How dour
The endeavor,
Striving ever,
Till victorious,
We o’ercome the toils inglorious.

2 Who thus the course doth finish well
Is freed from suff’ring, sin, and hell
And knoweth only blessing.
For in the suff’rings of this age
He is prepared that heritage
To take for his possessing.
Hardly
Could he
In the present
Life unpleasant
See or ponder
What great things await him yonder.

3 Then only will it plain appear
In truth, what Jesus’ life was here
How in His saints He liveth.
What here they showed in word and deed
To which the world gives little heed
Its glory there receiveth.
All that
Here sat
Long obscurèd,
In earth’s lurid
Night enclosèd
Is in heav’nly light exposèd.

4 The suff’rings of this age invite
In yonder world a glory bright
That eye hath not perceivèd,
Nor hath the ear of mortal heard
What God hath on His saints conferred
Who here with Christ are grievèd:
Where He
Safely
Deigns to lead them
And to feed them
In His pasture
Till in joy they see their Master.

The faithful man shall rise again
And, glorified, will join the train,
Like as the sun bright shining.
He shall in yonder fatherland
With heaven’s throng in friendship stand,
All joy therein obtaining.
We who
Pursue
Godly living
By God’s giving,
Shall be given
Rich rewards above in heaven.

CHURCH HYMN BOOK
Exceeding great is the reward,
To such who strive to serve the Lord;
Who persevere and still endure,
To war with sin and Satan's pow'r.

2 By self-experience they know,
What sorrows they must undergo,
'Till they obtain and gain the field,
'Till ev'ry foe to them must yield.

3 How blest are they who run this course,
In spite of Satan and his force:
They gain the vict'ry and the prize,
And enter in eternal joys.

4 Their suff'rings, conflicts, war and strife
Will fit them for a better life:
Such happiness they never knew,
Shall then be open to their view.

5 In yonder world shall be reveal'd,
The life of God in Christ conceal'd,
Such glories as no one can paint,
Shall be reveal'd in ev'ry saint.

6 All acts of love the christian wrought,
Such as the world regarded not,
The Lord will cause them to appear,
And shew that such had serv'd him here.

7 Eye hath not seen, nor ear yet heard,
What treasures Jesus has prepar'd;
For those who love him with their heart,
With him they have their lot and part.

8 With him they shall in glory dwell,
Where happiness shall never fail;
Where was and strife shall be no more,
But peace for evermore endure.

9 In that great day they shall arise,
And meet their Saviour in the skies;
Their bodies chang'd and glorified!
They meet the lamb and are his bride.

GERMAN
Wie reichlich wird dort den belohnt,
der sich stets hier nach Tugend sehnt,
und sucht sie zu verwalten;
der kämpfet, streitet früh und spat,
bis er es recht erfahren hat,
daß es kaum auszuhalten:
wie sehr,
wie schwer
alles Leiden
durch zu streiten,
daß sich findet
bis man alles überwindet.

2 Wohl dem der so den Lauf vollendt,
der findt vom Leiden dann ein End;
er wird auch überwinden;
dann in dem Leiden dieser Zeit
wird er für jene Welt bereit;
der wird auch glücklich finden:
Was er
vorher
nicht konnt sehen
noch verstehen
hier im Leben,
wird ihm dort im Himmel geben.

3 Nur dort wird es recht offenbar,
was hier das Leben Jesu war,
wie er lebt in den Frommen:
was hier der Fromme ausgeübt,
worauf die Welt nie Achtung giebt,
wird dort ans Lichte kommen:
was wir
allhier
nur im Schatten
Dunkel hatten,
auf der Erden,
wird dort Licht im Himmel werden.

4 Es bringt das Leiden dieser Zeit,
in jener Welt, die Herrlichkeit,
die nie kein Aug gesehen:
auch hat es nie kein Ohr gehört,
was Gott den Frommen hat beschert,
wann sie mit Christo gehen.
Wo er
der Herr,
sie wird leiten,
sie wird weiden
auf den Auen,
da sie Gott in Freuden schauen.

5 Dort wird der Fromme auferstehn
und mit verklärtem Leibe gehn,
wird leuchten wie die Sonne.
Er wird in jenem Vaterland
mit Himmelsbürger nur bekannt;
das bringt ihm Freud und Wonne.
Auch die
viel Müh
hier auf Erden
fromm zu werden,
wir uns geben,
lohnet reichlich jenes Leben.

Hier bringen wir den Leib zur Ruh

Here is my translation of the funeral & committal hymn, “Hier bringen wir den Leib zur Ruh / und decken ihn mit Erde” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #143, with melody assignment “Es ist gewisslich an der Zeit” and title “At the covering of the grave.” The Church Hymn Book (1816ff.) adapts the German as “This Body in the Grave Is Laid,” in 7 stanzas of Common Meter.

THIS body here to rest we lay
And in the earth conceal it,
That clay again may turn to clay,
Till Jesus shall reveal it;
For now, corruption setteth in;
To dust and ash it turns again,
As heard of yore by Adam.

2 It will not always here abide
Corrupted and forsaken;
The Lord will come, as prophesied,
The dead at once to waken,
And when Prince of Life is seen,
The soul and body joined again
Shall stand before the Judgment.

3 Then will it to all men be shown
How they their life conducted,
And all things hid shall be made known
In brightness unobstructed.
And when the Judge of all mankind
Shall each man just or guilty find,
He shall reward them duly.

4 Here learn, O mortal, what thou art,
And see thy life most clearly:
And on this earth prepare thy heart
To leave, though late or early.
For after sorrows and dismay
At last shall come thy dying day
When thou must part forever.

5 Thy days pass quickly like a breath,
So let thyself be driven,
O sinner, to prepare for death,
Wilt thou inherit heaven:
Repent and know that thou art dust,
And in Christ Jesus put thy trust,
Who is thy gracious Savior.

CHURCH HYMN BOOK

This body in the grave is laid,
Here to return to dust:
As God to father Adam said,
That all our bodies must.

2 Not here forever to remain,
For Christ himself shall come,
And call the dead to live again,
And raise them from the tomb.

3 The graves must all give up their dead,
And every other place;
God’s great commands must be obeyed,
And all the dead must raise.

4 All must appear before their Lord,
And their just sentence hear;
Likwise receive their just reward,
Such as their actions were.

5 May we be wise while here we live:
O may we seek and try,
And take advice, as Christ doth give,
To live and learn to die.

6 How swift our precious moments pass,
How soon our days are fled;
Prepared, or unprepared, alas!
We’re numbered with the dead.

7 O careless man, be wise and think,
What will become of thee:
Who now art standing on the brink,
Of vast eternity.

GERMAN
Hier bringen wir den Leib zur Ruh
und decken ihn mit Erde;
wir scharren nun das Grabe zu,
daß Erd zur Erden werde;
hier wird er Erde, Asch und Staub,
und der Verwesung ganz zum Raub,
wie Adam schon gehöret.

2 Hier bleibt er auch doch ewig nicht
in der Verwesung stecken,
der Herr wird kommen, wie er spricht,
die Todten aufzuwecken,
und wann der Lebensfürst erscheint,
so werden Leib und Seel vereint
und müssen vors Gerichte.

3 Dann wird ein jeder offenbar,
wie er gelebt auf Erden,
und was dann sonst verborgen war,
wird alles Lichte werden,
und wann der Richter aller Welt,
das rechte Urtheil jedem fällt,
dann wird er auch recht lohnen.

4 Hier lerne, Mensch, doch was du bist,
auch lerne, was dein Leben,
wohl hier auf dieser Erden ist,
daß du mußt bald aufgeben,
nach mancher Sorge, Müh und Noth
so kommt dann endlich gar der Tod,
und du mußt ewig scheiden.

5 Wie schnell verschwindet deine Zeit,
denk, Sünder, an das Sterben;
ach! mache dich zum Tod bereit,
willst du den Himmel erben,
so lern erkennen, was du bist,
und deinen Heiland, Jesum Christ,
recht in den Glauben fassen.

 Here is my translation of the hymn, “Jesus, Arzt für Leib und Seel” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #132 with title “For the sick and dying” with melody assignment “Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht.” The Church Hymn Book (1816ff.) adapts it “Jesus, the Patient’s Surest Friend” in 7 stanzas of Long Meter.

SOUL and body He can heal—
Jesus Christ, the great Physician;
Therefore at His kind appeal
Simply send Him thy petition.
If He send some grief or ill,
He doth bear it with us still.

2 He doth know the season due,
When to end all lamentation;
Where it brings repentance true,
Soon He sendeth consolation;
There is seen and known indeed
What His promise hath decreed.

3 We as sons are sought by God
When with sickness He doth beckon;
If we heed the Father’s rod,
Then what comfort shall awaken!
Punishment and chastening
Shall our soul’s advantage bring.

4 Though the body stricken be,
And must many a sorrow suffer
And we act impatiently,
Jesus will preserve them ever
Who on Him in faith rely,
Nor in death will let them die.

5 Come then, soul, be of good cheer,
Even all these troubles bearing;
For thy good these now appear,
Therefore do not be despairing.
Though assailed with much distress,
Thou art bound for blessedness.

CHURCH HYMN BOOK

Jesus, the patient's surest friend,
Will ever to his case attend;
He was in all, like man distress'd,
And bore the curse to make us bless'd.

2 In all afflictions we must bear,
We are the objects of his care;
Tho' we are made to feel the rod,
It is to draw us nearer God.

3 Sure we have reason to believe,
He knows the time when to relieve;
When to remove distress and pain,
And to restore our health again.

4 He guards us with his watchful eye,
While we do live, and when we die;
His word and promises are sure,
Nor can thy fail for ever more.

5 If thus the Sons of God we be,
We must not seek from him to flee,
When his afflicting hand we feel,
We must submit unto his will.

6 What tho' we suffer for a while,
Distress, and grief, and pain, and toil:
Since ev'ry rod and ev'ry smart,
Is to remorse the hard'ned heart.

7 Then ye distress'd be not afraid,
Nor let your minds be so dismay'd;
Christ your physician makes you whole,
Can cure the body and the soul.

GERMAN

Jesus, Arzt für Leib und Seel,
kann von aller Krankheit retten,
darum sollt auf sein Befehl
jeder Kranker zu ihm beten.
Hat er Krankheit aufgelegt,
ist ers, der sie mit uns trägt.

2 Er selbst weiß die beste Zeit
wann er soll die Klage wenden,
wenn die Straf zur Buß bereit,
dem wird er bald Hilfe senden;
der erfahret in der That,
was er ihm verheißen hat.

3 Gott uns, seine Kinder, sucht,
wanner uns mit Krankheit schläget;

5 Hab, o Seele, guten Muth,
auch in allen deinen Plagen;
alles kommt ja dir zu gut,
darum soll[s]t du nicht verzagen.
Ob dich manche Noth anficht,
so verdirbst du dennoch nicht.

Von dir, o Herr, kommt aller Segen

Here is my translation of the wedding hymn, “Von dir, o Herr, kommt aller Segen” (Paul Henkel, 1825), in NEGB #131 with melody assignment “Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten.” The translation in The Church Hymn Book (1816ff.), given below, consists of 5 stanzas of Common Meter.

FROM Thee, O Lord, comes every blessing;
Thy blessing on all lands doth rest,
As every man must be confessing.
Yea, marriage too Thy hand hath blest.
This bound Thou deign’st to consecrate
For men a wholesome, good estate.

2 The blessing in Thy name embedded
Upon this man and wife we lay
And solemnly declare them wedded.
Oh, bless them with Thy grace, we pray!
Let them in blessing go from hence
With Thee their Helper and Defense.

3 Let them in love be living ever,
And one another truly love;
Thou only art of all the Giver
That for the good of man doth prove.
Oh, teach them to perform Thy will,
So shall they be more blessed still!

CHURCH HYMN BOOK

Thou Lord from whom all blessings flow
Thy blessings fill each land;
All they who seek thy will to do,
Will find thy bounteous hand.

2 All states of life are blest by thee,
By thee, our Sovereign Lord;
Such must the state of marriage be,
According to thy word.

3 It was by thy command ordain'd,
Confirm'd and ratified.
And for a great and noble end,
Both blest and sanctified.

4 We join this couple in thy name,
Bless them O gracious God,
And let thy blessings rest on them,
Which is from thee bestow'd.

5 Be Thou heir Counsel and their Guide,
Direct them in Thy ways;
And strengthen them on ev'ry side:
In peace to spend their days.

GERMAN

Von dir, o Herr, kommt aller Segen,
du segnest ja das ganze Land;
dein Segen findt man allerwegen,
du segnest auch den Ehestand;

so lieben sie einander recht;
nur du allein kannst alles geben,
was dienet Menschlichem Geschlecht.
Ach, lehr sie thun den Willen dein,
so werden sie gesegnet sein.

Heut lobe Gott, du Christen-Chor

Here is my translation of the church consecration hymn, “Heut lobe Gott, du Christen-Chor!” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #130 with melody assignment “Es ist das Heil uns kommen her.” The Church Hymn Book (1816ff.) has an English adaptation in 7 stanzas of Common Meter, with the title “For the consecrating of a Church.” (See below.)

O CHRISTIAN choir, thy God adore
With heart and mind rejoicing,
And enter at His Temple door,
Praise for His goodness voicing;
Remember now His bounteous grace
That He hath builded in this place
A house for His due glory!

2 Let every soul as due draw near
With song and supplication;
And God will surely make it clear
To our great jubilation
That He will dwell among us here,
His temple’s glory, light, and cheer,
His flock’s beloved Shepherd.

3 He feeds us with His mighty Word,
To meadows green doth guide us;
He is our Shield and Rock assured
Lest any harm betide us.
Who trust God’s mercy, surely find
His pow’r renews their soul and mind
And makes them His own children.

4 The Lord hath brought us hitherto,
And brings us on to heaven;
Let us but fight the warfare true,
So shall success be given.
In hope and faith we pray that He
Will cause true Christianity
Within our church to flourish.

5 O Jesus, pass Thy knowledge down
To every generation.
Thy Word with might and vigor crown
For sinful man’s salvation;
Let wand’ring shop be called again,
Be wakened from their sleep of sin,
And to Thy flock be gathered.

CHURCH HYMN BOOK
We praise the Lord, whose love is great;
His mercies we embrace;
We enter now, His temple gate,
And thank him for his grace.

2 This house for sacred use design'd,
We dedicate to God;
Here may the Lord of glory find,
A dwelling and abode.

3 Here we approach thy sacred courts,
With reverence and fear;
We will engage our best efforts,
To worship Thee with pray'r.

4 Lord, may this be Thy sanctuary,
Here with Thy Spirit dwell:
To us and or posterity,
The way to heav'n reveal.

5 Here Savior, show Thy Gospel light,
And send Thy blessings down;
Bring thy life-giving Word to sight,
And make salvation known.

6 Here let Thy blessed Word be taught,
To us, and to our youth;
May thousands to that light be brought,
Where in they learn the truth.

7 Here let us hear the Gospel sound,
Attend Thy Word with grace;
Call many wand’ring sinners round,
To come and fill this place.

GERMAN
Heut lobe Gott, du Christenchor
mit freudigem Gemüthe,
geht ein durch seines Tempels Thor
und preiset seine Güte;
gedenket seiner großen Gnad,
das er sich hier errichtet hat,
ein Haus zu seiner Ehre.

2 Ein jeder komm nach seiner Pflicht,
mit Singen, Beten, Flehen;
vergesset solches nimmer nicht,
so wird man freudig sehen,
daß er wird selber wohnen hier
und sein des Tempels Licht und Zier,
und Hirte seiner Heerde.

3 Er weidet uns mit seinem Wort,
führt uns auf grünen Auen;
er ist das Leben, Schild und Hort,
die seiner Güte trauen,
erfahren, daß die göttlich Kraft,
sie ganz zu neuen Menschen macht,
und Gottes Kinder werden.

4 Bisher hat uns der Herr gebracht,
er wird uns weiter bringen;
wir üben gute Ritterschaft,
es wird uns auch gelingen;
wir hoffen, glauben, bitten drum,
der Herr wird wahres Christenthum
in unstre Kirche schaffen.

5 Hier, Jesu, pflanz Erkenntnis fort,
auf Kind und Kindes Kinder,
gib Kraft und Nachdruck deinem Wort,
beleb die todte Sünder;
laß rufen die verlorne Schaf,
erweck sie von dem Sündenschlaf,
bring sie zu deiner Heerde.

Wir wollen also nun beschliessen

 Here is my translation of the hymn for the end of school, “Wir wollen also nun beschliessen” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #129 with melody assignment “Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten.” The Church Hymn Book (1816ff.) makes this two separate hymns of two stanzas each, both in Common Meter: “The Labors of Our Teachers Bless” and “Thy Heav’nly Blessing, Jesus, Grant.” Thoughts are more developed in the English versions.

NOW let our lesson-time be ended;
The day’s instruction now is through.
God, bless our efforts here expended,
To teach aright as is our due.
Let our departure therefore be
Commended, Lord, alone to Thee.

2 In Jesus’ name let us be going;
O Jesus, let Thy help be known!
Speak Thine Amen upon our doing,
Then shall the cause remain Thine own.
Lord, Thine Amen alone shall be
Our own Amen eternally.

Translation © 2023 Matthew Carver.

CHURCH HYMN BOOK
1 The labors of our teachers bless,
Impress them on our mind;
To their endeavors grant success,
Let us the blessing find.

2 Lord, grant us knowledge, zeal and love,
Our little faith increase,
And make us wise, that we may prove,
The things that works our peace.

***

Thy heav'nly blessing, Jesus grant,
To these, the present youth.
Give them such light and grace they want,
To understand the truth.

2 Engage their hearts with fervent zeal,
To serve Thee all their days,
And cause their hearts and minds to feel
The workings of Thy grace.

GERMAN
Wir wollen also nun beschliessen
und enden unsern Unterricht.
Gott, segne, was wir uns befliessen,
zu lehren recht nach unsrer Pflicht.
Laß unsern Ausgang dir allein,
nur dir, o Herr, befohlen sein.

2 Wir schließen nun in Jesu Namen;
wollst selber, Jesu, bei uns sein.
Sprich zu der Sache selber Amen,
so bleibt die Sache selber dein.
Dein Amen, Jesu, nur allein,
wird unser Amen ewig sein.

Gott lehret uns in seinem Wort

Here is my translation of the hymn for the opening of school, “Gott lehret uns in seinem Wort” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #128, with melody assignment “Nun sich der Tag geendet hat.” An English translation indeed exists in the same meter (see below), but lacking a stanza, or rather, with the material of stanzas 3 and 4 combined. However, upon closer inspection, in view of several other differences, it seemed that a more exact translation of the German might be worthwhile.

GOD teacheth us in His dear Word,
We ever should assay
To bring up children to the Lord
And raise them in His way.

2 School was established for that cause,
That therein might be taught
The precious Word, the Light that glows
To us from heaven brought.

3 ’Tis praiseworthy and beautiful
To hearing and to sight
When children duly to go school
And are informed aright.

4 Where children day by day are raised
To follow God’s command,
There is the Savior highly praised,
There shall His kingdom stand.

5 True gladness faithful parents share
When church and school go well,
Where tender youth are raised with care
God’s kingdom to indwell.

6 Dear children, learn with diligence
In school, for that is best,
Would ye be wise and full of sense
And also ever blest.

7 Yet hear your God and Him obey,
For so His Word is giv’n;
Then shall ye follow on the way
That brings you unto heav’n.

Translation © 2023 Matthew Carver.

CHURCH HYMN BOOK
God hath commanded in his word,
To teach the tender youth:
In the discipline of the Lord,
And knowledge of the truth.

2 Therefore the christian school is taught,
That rising youth may know,
And learn what ev'ry christian ought
In all their lives to do.

3 It is a pleasing thing to see,
Where virtue is impress'd;
And youth is taught the righteous way,
The way that makes them bless'd.

4 All pious parents do rejoice,
When christian knowledge grows;
And when their children take advice,
Such as the Lord bestows.

5 Dear children take advice and learn,
Obey the Lord's command!
And let it be your chief concern,
His word to understand.

6 God's blessing then will rest on you,
And blessed shall you be;
You shall be blest in all ye do:
Blest to eternity.

GERMAN
Gott lehret uns in seinem Wort,
wir sollen uns bemühn,
daß wir die Kinder immerfort
in seinem Weg erziehn.

2 Dazu hat man die Schul erricht,
daß darin werd gelehrt
das theure Wort, das helle Licht,
das uns von Gott beschert.

3 Das ist wohl löblich, das ist schön,
wo man es sieht und hört,
daß Kinder in die Schule gehn
und werden recht gelehrt.

4 Wo man die Kinder täglich weist
in Gottes Wege gehn,
da wird der Heiland hoch gepreist
und sein Reich wird bestehn.

5 Fromme Eltern die freuen sich,
wann Kirch und Schule blüht;
wo man die Jugend fleißiglich
für Gottes Reich erzieht.

6 Ach, Kinder lernt mit allem Fleiß
in eurer Schule fein,
wollt ihr verständig klug und weis
und auch gesegnet sein.

7 Gehorchet Gott nach seinem Wort,
wie euch gezeiget wird,
so kommt ihr auf dem Wege fort,
der euch zum Himmel führt.

Daß Gott befohlen hat

Here is my translation of the hymn for the consecration of elders and church wardens (officers), “Daß Gott befohlen hat” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #127 with melody assignment “O Gott, du frommer Gott.” It is essentially a metrical instruction on the rite for which it is appointed (ordering deacons according to the sense of church officers, or non-ordained lay servants for the physical needs of the congregation and its property), concluding with a post-consecration prayer for the consecrated. The counterpart in The Church Hymn Book (1816ff.) is “The Great Apostle Gave Command” in 6 stanzas of Long Meter; where the title indicates “church wardens, or deacons.”

PAUL’S teaching testifies
That God hath so ordainèd
By His own counsel wise
That order be maintainèd,
The church to oversee,
And so it must and should—
Yea, it serves needfully
The congregation’s good.

2 He teaches Timothy
That in the congregations
It should so ordered be
In all such situations,
That servants ever should
Attend the church’s need
Who consecrated, would
The congregation lead.

3 Therefore in godly fear
We keep this consecration,
Appointing servants here
Whose solemn occupation
Shall be to serve with care
And faithfulness always
That all things well may fare,
God’s be the glorious praise.

   After the Consecration.

O God, Thy servant aid
To fill as doth befit him
The duty on him laid,
To which we here commit him;
Grant him with speed to do
Whatever work he should,
And when the work is through
Grant that the end be good.

Translation © 2023 Matthew Carver.

CHURCH HYMN BOOK
The great Apostle gave command,
Let every Church in order stand;
Good regulations must be made,
And be by all the Church obeyed.

2 To answer that, so good effect,
Saint Paul himself thus did direct:
To order deacons everywhere,
Who should that sacred office bear.

3 Let such who act the faithful part,
And have the cause of Christ at heart,
And such as are of good repute,
That needful office execute.

4 Is it their aim in all they do,
To raise the Savior’s Church below!
Their faithful labors will be blest,
And Jesus’ kingdom be increased.

5 Dear Lord be with thy spirit near,
While we ordain these brethren here;
May zeal and knowledge, love and grace,
Prepare and fit them for that place.

6 Be Thou their counsel when they need,
Their conduct bless, their labors speed;
Oh, may they be of greatest worth,
To aid and build Thy church on earth.

GERMAN
Daß Gott befohlen hat,
daß wir die Ordnung halten,
nach seinem weisen Rath,
die Kirche zu verwalten,
das zeugt uns Paulus Lehr,
so müße es auch sein;
ja daß es nöthig wär,
zum Besten der Gemein.

2 Er zeigt Timoth’um an,
so sollte ers bestellen:
das wäre wohl gethan
in allen solchen Fällen,
daß der Gemein allzeit
die Diener stets vorgehn,
die zu dem Dienst geweiht,
demselben vorzustehn.

3 Desgleichen thun auch wir
so wie uns ist befohlen,
wir ordnen Diener hier,
die der Gemeine sollen,
mit aller Treu und Fleiß
zum Besten der Gemein
zu Gottes Ehr und Preis
allzeit beschäftigt sein.

Nach der Einsegnung.

4 Ach Gott, hilf solchem thun,
was ihm zu thun gebühret,
wozu ihn sein Beruf
in seinem Stande führet;
gieb, daß er thue bald
das Werk, das er thun soll,
und wann ers thut, so gieb,
daß es gerathe wohl.

Mein Jesu, führe mich

Here is my translation of the Confirmation hymn, “Mein Jesu, führe mich” (Paul Henkel, 1825), in NEGB #126 with melody assignment “O Gott, du frommer Gott” and title “For the Confirmed Youth.” Again, the Confirmation hymn contains substantial material shared with repentance hymns.

MY Jesus, lead Thou me.
The Way and Life I own Thee.
Let me show love to Thee,
More than I yet have shown Thee,
By Thy good Spirit’s strength,
Help me each hour anew,
So let me be at length
More faithful and more true.

2 Thou hast me dearly bought
By suffering and dying;
To Baptism hast me brought
A heav’nly home supplying;
Thus if I wake or sleep,
I should seek heartily
To walk Thy way and keep
Thy covenant with me.

3 But I have seldom drowned
The Old Man and his doing,
Nor lived as I am bound,
The right and good pursuing;
I know it is not good,
My heart cries day and night:
I live not as I should,
O Lord, before Thy sight.

4 Thy Word doth make me know
I have not kept as spoken
The covenantal vow,
But oft the same have broken;
My conscience doth accuse,
Yea, loudly telleth me
That I did oft abuse
And sin, and anger Thee.

5 Astray in heart and mind,
Thy way I have forsaken,
And, hardened, stiff-necked, blind,
The way of sin have taken.
Till now, though often warned,
I ran with slackless pace;
And with unreason scorned
The covenant of grace.

6 From earliest infancy
I have not loved Thee rightly,
But in iniquity
Have walked, alas, despite Thee!
Oh, wilt Thou enter in
To judgment with Thy child,
How shall I favor win
Or find a judgment mild?

7 Since by Thy Word’s pure light
I am instructed ever,
And duty-bound by right
Sincerely to endeavor
To serve Thee faithfully,
Help me Thy banner bear,
And to Thy glory live
And be Thy child fore’er!

8 My God, do Thou forgive
My sin and my transgression,
That I with Thee may live,
Enjoying Thy salvation;
I’m set apart for Thee
By Thy true herald’s hand;
Prepare me, then, to see
The heav’nly Fatherland.

GERMAN
Mein Jesu führe mich,
du bist der Weg, das Leben,
daß ich recht liebe dich,
das kannst du mir selbst gebn,
durch deines Geistes Kraft,
steh du mir allzeit bei,
so wird in mir geschaft,
daß ich dir werde treu.

2 Du hast mich theur erkauft,
durch Leiden und durch Sterben,
dir bin ich auch getauft,
den Himmel zu ererben;
drum sollt ich stets drauf sehn,
daß ich von Herzensgrund,
in deinem Weg mag gehn
und halten deinen Bund.

3 Ich aber habe nicht
der Sünde widerstrebet,
und nicht nach meiner Pflicht
dem Rechten nachgelebet;
das weiß ich leider wohl,
mein Herze sagt es mir,
daß ich nicht, wie ich soll,
so lebe, Herr, vor dir.

4 Dein Wort das macht mir kund,
daß ich nicht, wie versprochen,
gehalten meinen Bund,
den hab ich oft gebrochen;
Gewissen klagt mich an,
ja gar laut sagt es mir,
daß ich oft bös gethan,
gesündigt oft vor dir.

5 Ich arm, verirrtes Kind
hab deinen Weg gefehlet,
verhärt, verstockt und blind
den Sünderweg gewählet,
so lief ich immerhin,
ja, bis zu dieser Stund,
und im verkehrten SInn
veracht den Gnadenbund.

6 Ich hab von Kindheit auf
dich niemals recht geliebet,
in meinem Sündenlauf
dich leider oft betrübet,
ach! wirst du dann mit mir
in das Gerichte gehn,
wie werd ich dann vor dir
gerechter Gott bestehn!

7 Nun bin ich durch dein Wort
ermahnt und unterrichtet,
nun bin ich immerfort
mit Recht dazu verpflichtet,
daß ich mich recht bestreb,
daß ich dir bleibe treu,
und dir zu Ehren leb
und dein Kind ewig sei.

8 Mein Gott, du wollest mir
all meine Sünd vergeben,
damit ich auch bei dir
hab ewig Heil und Leben;
dir bin ich nun geweiht
durch deines Dieners Hand,
mach du mich selbst bereit
fürs himmlisch Vaterland.

Herr Jesu, wahrer Seelenhirt

Here is my translation of the Confirmation hymn, “Herr Jesu, wahrer Seelenhirt” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #124, with melody assignment “Es ist gewisslich an der Zeit.” The title is “At the confirmation of the young.” However, the content seems applicable to cases of in which church discipline has been administered; or at least a dose of repentance-preaching and due humbling is embedded. The English counterpart in The Church Hymn Book (1816ff.), “O Jesus, Faithful Shepherd, Lord,” is composed in 6 stanzas of Long Meter.

LORD Jesus, Shepherd of the way,
And Friend of mortals lowly
Thou seek’st the sheep that go astray
And mak’st the sinner holy;
Their Life, their Lord, their Righteousness,
Thou freest them from all distress
Who heartily will seek Thee.

2 Behold with pity, not with wrath,
The flock before Thee growing;
None else can save them from the path
On which they have been going—
The path that leads to death for aye,
The path on which they go astray
As sheep without direction.

3 Before their birth Thou didst begin
To be their Lord and Savior,
Nor leav’st them on the path of sin
That they should die forever;
Thy blood hath bought Thy children prized,
And in Thy name they were baptized
And with Thy hand were hallowed.

4 Oh, that the cov’nant they ignore,
And yet feel not convicted!
Their heart should have been wounded sore,
Their souls, have been afflicted,
That they lived not before Thee so,
Nor sought the good as they did owe,
And as Thou hast commanded.

5 O Father, righteous God, forgive
Their sin and their transgression,
And let them in Thy favor live,
For Jesus’ death and Passion;
Thou wilt not banish from Thy grace
Those, Lord, who will but seek Thy face.
On these poor souls have mercy!

6 May they again be joined with Thee
Lord, in Thy cov’nant holy,
And therein ever steadfast be,
In Thy way going solely;
In time of trouble help afford,
And keep them in Thy faith and Word
Until their life is ended.

CHURCH HYMN BOOK
O Jesus, faithful Shepherd, Lord!
We pray, thy heav'nly grace afford,
Thou art the life, the truth and way,
Thou seekest those that go astray.

2 Look on the flock presented here,
Who at thy throne of grace appear;
They are the purchase of thy blood,
And dedicated unto God.

3 Thy mercy kept them all their days,
Though they have walk'd in sinful ways:
The way wherein great numbers go,
The way that leads to endless woe.

4 Their hearts should be with grief oppress'd
And godly sorrow fill each breast;
Sure they would mourn, could they but see
How they have err'd and stray'd from thee.

5 O Let thy grace and love be felt,
And cause their stony hearts to melt;
Make deep impressions on their mind,
That makes them humble and resign'd.

6 Shew mercy, Lord, to them, we pray,
Grant light and life, in which they may,
Return to thee, their Lord again,
And faithful until death remain.

GERMAN
Herr Jesu, wahrer Seelenhirt,
du Freund der Menschenkinder,
du suchst die Schafe die verirrt,
errettst die arme Sünder;
du bist ihr Leben, Herr und Gott,
befreiest die von aller Noth,
die dich von Herzen suchen.

2 Drum siehe mit Erbarmen an
die Heerde vor dir stehen,
weil niemand sonst sie retten kann
vom Wege den sie gehen;
vom Wege, der zum Tode führt,
vom Weg worauf sie sind verirrt
als die verlorne Schafe.

3 Du hast sie ja von Kindheit auf
erhalten vom Verderben,
auch nicht in ihrem Sündenlauf
sie lassen ewig sterben;
dein Blut hat sie gar theur erkauft,
sie sind in deinem Nam getauft,
und dir ja selbst geweihet.

4 Ach, Jammer! daß sie in dem BUnd
mit dir nicht treu geblieben,
die Herzen sollten sein verwundt,
die Seelen sich betrüben,
daß sie vor dir nicht so gelebt,
daß sie dem Guten nachgestrebt,
wie du selbst hast befohlen.

5 Ach, Vater, ach, gerechter Gott!
vergib doch alle Sünden;
um Jesu Leiden, Pein und Tod
laß wieder Gnade finden;
die wirst du ja verstoßen nicht,
die suchen, Herr, dein Angesicht.
Erbarme dich der Armen.

6 Gib Jesu, daß sie ganz aufs Neu
mit dir im Bunde stehen,
und auch beständig bleiben treu
in deinem Weg zu gehen;
steh ihnen bei in aller Noth,
erhalte sie bis in den Tod,
in deinem Wort und Glauben.

Köstlich ist was Gott uns lehrt

Here is my translation of the Catechesis/School hymn, “Köstlich ist was Gott uns lehrt” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #123 with melody assignment “Meinen Jesum laß ich nicht.” The English adaptation in the Church Hymn Book (1816ff.), “How Precious Is God’s Holy Word,” in 5 stanzas of Common Meter, is ascribed to David Henkel (see below).

PRECIOUS teaching in the Word
From our God may be discernèd;
Blest is he who well hath heard
And with true devotion learnèd.
He finds now in ample store
What will serve him evermore.

2 ’Tis a precious gift and rare,
That we are in Scripture given,
For God’s teaching we find there,
And His love, who sent from heaven
His dear Son, so highly prized,
In whose name we are baptized.

3 He the Bishop of His sheep,
And the Shepherd faithful ever,
Will His flock in safety keep,
And will leave the straying never:
All the flock He wills to feed,
And to pasture green doth lead.

4 He doth feed each precious lamb,
Leads it to His pasture pleasing,
Makes it righteous, good, and tame,
Gives it all His joy unceasing;
Will the lambs but Him obey,
He will lead them on life’s way.

  At the Close of the Instruction.

5 Dearest Jesus, deign to bless
The instruction to us given;
On each soul its truth impress,
By the Spirit’s graces seven,
Which Thou dearly boughtest us,
When Thou died’st upon the cross.

CHURCH HYMN BOOK
How precious is God's holy word,
That Word of life and peace,
Shows man the way unto the Lord,
The way of happiness.

2 How blest are they, and only they,
Who wish the truth to know;
Who seek to find the righteous way,
And strive therein to go.

3 Lord, in Thy presence we appear,
Here at Thy throne we stand.
Make us Thy Word of truth to hear,
And live to Thy command.

4 O! mighty Shepherd of Thy sheep,
Who seekest those that stray;
Thy blessed Word and staff can keep
Us in Thy righteous way.

5 Teach us the way of life and truth,
The way of righteousness.
Direct, O Lord, the wand'ring youth,
The way of life and peace.

Ach Gott, du gibst uns Menschenkinder

Here is my translation of the Catechesis & School hymn, “Ach Gott, du gibst uns Menschenkinder” (Paul Henkel, d. 1825), in NEGB #122 with melody assignment “Wer nur den lieben Gott läßt walten.” The hymn is divided into 5 stanzas before instruction, confined to God’s instruction generally, and at the close of the instruction, 1 Christological stanza. Among the numerous English counterparts in the Church Hymn Book (1816ff.) it is difficult to find a single hymn of the same tenor. Someone with eagerness to soften the tone has perhaps divided the first section into the two hymns, “Happy the Youth That Soon Begin” and “How Precious Is God’s Holy Word” (each 5 stanzas of Common Meter), while David Henkel has also added his “Approach Dear Youth unto the Lord.” There is a profusion of hymns on the theme. The concluding German stanza of our hymn blossoms into a 13-stanza hymn (“After Catechising or after School), “We Praise Thee, Jesus, Gracious Lord,” which certainly gives a sense less of an emergency ration than of a groaning board.

O GOD, whose teaching, if we heed it
Within Thy Word, is strong to save:
Much do we lowly sinners need it,
Would we live yet beyond the grave;
Without it we would know Thee not,
Eternal death would be our lot.

2 Oh, let Thy Word and Spirit make us
To know the way that heav’nward strives;
Then to our duty we’ll betake us,
And to Thy glory lead our lives.
Alone Thy Spirit gives us might
That we may do the good and right.

3 Like sheep who have the fold forsaken,
We walk the way to death that tends;
Unless from sleep of sin Thou waken,
We wander still until life ends.
We go along, stiff-necked and blind—
Alas, how many such we find!

4 O Lord, then leave us not to wander,
Lest we be ever lost to grace
And soul and body perish yonder!
How can we stand before Thy face
If light upon our sins be shed,
And we be brought to judgment dread?

5 Oh, Father, boundless is compassion,
Bring us not into judgment thus!
Thou only canst remove transgression
So that it may not threaten us.
Thy goodness, truth, and wisdom be
Our teachers here, Thy grace to see.

   At the Close of Instruction.

6 Lord Jesus, to the Father leading,
The Way, the Truth, the Life Thou art!
Thy death and suffering and bleeding
Thy righteousness to us impart;
Oh, grant Thy Holy Spirit’s light,
And we are truly taught aright.

GERMAN
Ach Gott, du gibst uns Menschenkinder
aus deinem Worte Unterricht.
Ach, wir bedarfens, arme Sünder,
dann sonst erkennen wir dich nicht;
wir leben, doch in Sünden todt,
und sterben ohne dich, o Gott.

2 Ach, laß dein Wort und Geist uns lehren,
den Weg, der uns zum Leben führt,
so leben wir auch dir zu Ehren,
und thun was uns zu thun gebührt.
Nur deines guten Geisteswerk
gibt uns zum Guten Kraft und Stärk.

3 Wir gehen wie verlorne Schafe
den Weg der zum Verderben führt,
weckst du uns nicht vom Sündenschlafe,
so bleiben wir darin verirrt.
Wir gehn dahin verstockt un blind
wie leider sonst noch viele sind.

4 Ach, Herr, laß uns doch so nicht sterben,
sonst müssen wir verloren gehn,
ewig an Leib und Seel verderben,
wie können wir vor dir bestehn:
wann du uns stellest vor das Licht,
wann du uns forderst vors Gericht.

5 Ach, lieber Vater voll Erbarmen,
ach, geh nicht mit uns ins Gericht,
nur du kannst schaffen, daß wir Armen
in unsern Sünden sterben nicht.
Nur deine Güte, Treu und Rath
lehrt uns erkennen deine Gnad.

Zum Beschluß nach dem Unterricht.

6 Herr Jesu, wahrer Weg und Leben,
du bist, der uns zum Vater führt;
dein Leben, Sterben kann uns geben,
daß wir auch werden recht regiert,
dein heilger Geist sei uns beschert,
so werden wir dann recht gelehrt.

Weh mir, daß ich so oft und viel

Here is my translation of the Repentance hymn, “Weh mir, daß ich so oft und viel” (Johann Heermann, d. 1647), in NEGB #110 in 5 stanzas with melody assignment “Es ist gewisslich an der Zeit,” first appearing in 12 stanzas in the author’s Devoti Musica Cordis (Breslau, 1630) with title “Another repentance hymn, in which a Christian prays for grace and forgiveness of his sins, after Tauler.” Fischer notes that many hymnals reduce it to 8 stanzas: “Certainly the hymn can only gain by moderate abbreviation, cf. st. 11 . . .” Henkel includes only the first 5 stanzas according to his usual method.

AH! woe is me, that I so oft
Have sinned as one blind-hearted,
And heaped my crimes so high aloft,
And from my God departed!
Who naught hath shown but utter grace
And good in every time and place
Since I was first begotten.

2 Ah, woe is me, that I have sealed
My heart to God so coldly,
Who else would be my Sword and Shield
To fight distresses boldly.
Abominations there I’ve poured,
It stinketh as a pit abhorred,
In which the devil dwelleth.

3 My heart and mind convict me well,
I must confess it freely,
The chief of sinners, bound for hell,
Must be my title, really;
Yet when, O God, I Thee survey,
I cannot doubt in any way
Thy pow’r and will to save me.

4 Though great my tyrant sins have been,
Which kindled Thy displeasure,
Thy grace is greater far than sin
And pow’r of man to measure:
As great as Thou, great God, must be,
So great with Thee eternally
Is Thy great grace and goodness.

5 That grace Thou hast no man denied
Since first the world was framèd;
Who fearless doth in Thee confide
Shall never be ashamèd.
I pray, I plead, I call, I cry
In hope await Thy kind reply;
Grace let me find, I pray Thee.

6 I call to mind the gracious word
That from Thy mouth proceeded,
When I with joy Thy longing heard
Thy hopeful accents heeded:
Thou hast, O man, oft run astray
To idols, and thus away
Thy soul from Me estrangèd.

7 Yet come, repent what thou hast done,
Strange lovers from thee sever,
And I will take thee in again
And keep thy soul forever.
Upon this word I cling to Thee,
And come, believing fervently
That Thou indeed wilt take me.

8 For I in truth am such a soul
As other loves desired,
And fleeing Thee, my moveless Pole,
In every swamp was mired.
Delights of others climes I sought,
Which yet to comfort offer naught,
But as a cloudlet vanish.

9 I am the wayward, wicked child
That from Thy keeping wandered,
And with the world’s defiance wild
His heritage hath squandered,
And recklessly the Bread divine
Hath cast aside, and like the swine
Upon the pods hath feasted.

10 O God, I oft against Thee strove,
My own delights pursuing,
And after those desires I drove,
Which are but good’s undoing;
The highest Good I have despised,
Have only fleeting trifles prized,
And in the world lived proudly.

11 Thus poor and naked I must die
Some near and wretched hour;
And in my Father’s lap to lie
Is far beyond my power;
Yea, I must moulder after death
In my own filth, when flees my breath,
As all the cattle perish.

12 And yet in grace, I beg of Thee,
Remember not forever
My sin and my iniquity,
But in Thy gracious favor
Forget, forbear, and let me live.
A new heart, Father, to me give,
Through Christ, Thy Son, my Savior.

GERMAN
Weh mir, daß ich so oft und viel,
als wär ich gar verblendet,
gesündigt ohne Zahl und Ziel,
von Gott mich abgewendet!
der mir doch nichts denn lauter Gnad
und Wohlthat stets erwiesan hat
in meinem ganzen Leben.

2 Weh mir, daß ich vor meinem Gott
mein Herz so fest verschloßen,

So groß, o großer Gott, du bist,
so groß ist auch zu aller Frist
bei dir die Gnad und Güte.

5 Die hast du keinem nie versagt,
weil diese Welt gestanden:
Wer dir vertraut und nicht verzagt,
wird nimmermehr zu Schanden.
Ich bitt, ich fleh, ich schrei, ich ruf,
auf deine Gnad ich wart und hoff:
ach, laß mich Gnade finden!

6 Jetzt denk ich an die schönen Wort,
aus deinem Mund ergangen,
die ich mit Freuden hab gehört,
da du sprichst mit Verlangen:
Du hast, o Mensch, mit vielen oft
gehalten zu und unverhofft
mir deine Seel entführet:

7 Doch komm, bereu was du gethan,
laß fremde Buhlen fahren,
ich will dich wieder nehmen an
und deine Seel bewahren.
Bei diesem Wort ergreif ich dich,
un d komm zu dir, glaub festiglich,
du wirst mich auch annehmen.

8 Denn ich bin eben diese Seel,
die andern nachgesprungen,
und sich von dir, Immanuel,
in allen Schlamm gedrungen:
Ich habe fremde Lust gesucht,
die doch zu trösten nicht vermocht,
die wie ein Rauch verschwindet.

9 Ich bin das ungerathne Kind,
das sich von dir gewendet
und mit dem frechen Weltgesind
sein Erbteil hat verspendet,
dich als des Lebens Brot ohn Scheu
hintangesetzt und wie die Säu
mit Träabern sich gefüllet.

10 Ich habe dir oft widerstrebt,
gefolget meinen Lüsten,
und den Begierden nachgelebt,
die, was recht ist, verwüsten.
Das höchste Gut hab ich veracht,
auf dies, was zeitlich ist, gedacht
und in der Welt hoch pranget.

11 Darum so muß ich nackt und bloß
in meinem Elend sterben:
Ich kann mir meines Vaters Schloß
durch mich selbst nicht erwerben;
ich muß verfaulen nach dem Tod,
in meinem eignen Mist und Koth,
gleichwie das Vieh verfaulet.

12 Doch aber bitt ich dich, aus Gnad
wollst du nicht mehr gedenken,
was ich geübt für Frevelthat,
ins Meer wollst du sie senken.
Die Sünd erlaß, die Straf abführ,
ein neues Herze schaff in mir
um deines Sohnes willen.
